Birds of Prey
Students learn about the birds they encounter in their own neighborhoods and
their own backyards at the museum and the importance of these incredible animals
in the natural world.
What do hawks, owls, osprey, vultures and falcons have in common?
They are all common residents of Horry County and are classified as Birds of
Prey. Nearly every season of the year is marked with the opportunity to observe
some of nature's most remarkable birds here along the South Carolina Coastal
Plain. The osprey, or fish eagle as it is sometimes locally known, can be seen
nesting along the banks of the scenicWaccamaw River and along the coastal
marshes. If you are fortunate enough, you might even see this spectacular bird
diving into the water from high in the air and retrieving a wiggling catch of
mullet or shad in its' sharp talons.
