Peter Horry

Horry County's Namesake
Born the son of French Huguenot parents on March 15th, 1743, Peter Horry played
an important role in South Carolina's history diring the Revolutionary War and
thereafter.
During the Revolutionary War, Horry was commissioned as a captain serving in the
Second Regiment at the Battle of Fort Moultrie. By July of 1781, he was in
command of the Fifth Regiment and was united with General Francis Marion in the
Battle of Quinby Bridge. After the war he was elected to the S.C. House by
Prince George Winyah Parish in 1782. He also served in the Senate for the Sixth
and Seventh General Assemblies and again in the House for the Tenth. Peter Horry
Is buried in Trinity Churchyard in Columbia, SC.
