SUMMARY:Judy Lilly: Landscape Quilts
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by local quilter Judy Lilly on Saturday\, March 14th at 10:30 AM. Join us as Judy shares techniques for landscape quilting. \nJudy Lilly has been a certified quilting instructor since 1995. She earned her certification from the National Quilting Association and has taught hundreds of students over the past 20+ years. Lilly was born and raised in Southern West Virginia. She learned the art of quilting from her mother and fell in love with quilts at an early age. Her first quilt top was a home economics project when she was 16 and she hasn’t stopped since. \nLilly’s work has won numerous awards that are displayed in both personal and private collections across the country. Currently her favorite type of quilting is landscape quilts—pictorial works that look and hang like art! She endeavors to combine her art background and quilting knowledge as she creates artistic views of the many beautiful places she’s visited. \nThe program will begin at 10:30 am in the Museum Classroom\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for thirty local veterans will be presented on Saturday\, March 14th in the Museum’s auditorium at 1:00 pm at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. After six years\, the foundation decided to award a quilt to any veteran who served during wartime era\, from WWII to present. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded over 216\,000 quilts. \nThe local QOVF\, Myrtle Beach Shore Birds began in 2010 and covers Horry\, Georgetown and Florence Counties. So far\, they have awarded 2\,855 quilts. Each quilt takes around 100 hours to make and costs around $250.00. Requests for quilts come from veterans throughout their area\, many living in and around Conway\, SC. Myrtle Beach Shore Birds awarded 636 quilts in 2017 and 766 in 2018. The group is a 501c3 nonprofit and is dependent on donations to allow them to make and award the quilts. Those interested in helping Myrtle Beach Shorebirds make quilts can contact the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
