SUMMARY:Featured Quilter-Deanna Holter
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, March 17th at 11 AM as we continue our celebration of textiles with local quilter Deanna Holter. Deanna will share her experience quilting and show off pieces that she has made. \nDeanna Holter started her quilting career around 1982 with Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day. In that program\, quilters didn’t use long arm quilts\, but instead sewed an ‘x’ from corner to corner. She has since altered her original piece and quilts on her long arm machine. After her first piece\, Deanna didn’t make any more quilts until moving to South Carolina in 2005. She found a cute pattern and went to town making quilts for each of her sister in laws. Those quilts got her started on a quilting journey in which she connected with the Grand Strand Quilters. There she met Joan Wobbleton and began volunteering to make Quilts of Valor quilts. Wanting to be a part of a more close knit guild\, Deanna joined the Conway Quilt Guild. Deanna feels very grateful to be part of a group of who she calls wonderful and caring ladies that have also been involved in many ceremonies to present quilts to veterans in the Conway area. \nThe program will begin at 11 AM at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:The Chicken Bog King of the Pee Dee
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Chicken Bog: The Chicken Bog King of the Pee Dee. \nIn Latta\, South Carolina in the historic Pee Dee region\, a southern stew tradition that served the appetites of rural families located in the swamp communities of Lowcountry South Carolina\, is maintained by the Mayor of Latta who has long held the mantle of “Chicken Bog King of the Pee Dee”. Filmmaker Stan Woodward follows him as he and his crew prepare a chicken bog (chicken\, rice and secret ingredients only known to the stewmaster) for serving at a stump meeting rally for a local US Congressman running for re-election. Such stews are used in conjunction with political rallies in this part of the state\, with the chicken bog tradition tracing back to the late 1800s and the democratic stump meeting held annually at Gallivants Ferry\, SC. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 17th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. For a full list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
