SUMMARY:A True Likeness. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with A True Likeness. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film tells the story of Richard Samuel Roberts\, a little-known African American photographer from South Carolina whose posthumous discovery transcended stereotypes and brought to light a significant legacy. Heralded as one of the south’s most accomplished photographers of the 1920’s and 1930’s\, Roberts was a self-taught artist who was determined to become a master portrait maker\, with every image a true likeness of the subject. But for more than 40 years after his death his work remained lost to all but his family and friends. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 25th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2026. For a list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov.

SUMMARY:Dr. Barbara Hickman Whye: Quilts by Mary Hickman
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us on Wednesday\, March 25th at 2 PM as Dr. Barbara Hickman Whye shares a slideshow of the many quilts made by her 95 year old mother\, Mary Hickman. One of Mrs. Hickman’s quilts will also be on view during the program. \nBorn in the Maple Swamp section of Horry County to Ben and Mary Booth\, and the 4th of 8 children\, Mary Hickman always had a passion for learning. Mary’s childhood shaped her capabilities and compassion. She honed her discipline\, farming\, quilting and leadership skills alongside her loving siblings. \nShe married Fred Hickman\, Jr. and together they raised 8 children. She joined the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and has been a faithful member for 76 years. She has served in many capacities and\, in her words\, “in every role but the deacon and the pastor”. She is currently the Mother of the Church and in her prior role of President of the Missionary Society\, she established the Mary B. Hickman Scholarship Initiative aimed at accelerating the path for young people obtaining college degrees. \nMary completed her last quilt in 2010. Her creative designs are spread across homes all over the world and continue to keep families warm and cozy. Over the years\, she has given out to community members over 100 plus quilts. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov .
