SUMMARY:War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. \nWar Birds is a documentary film about three American pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force during World War I. The film chronicles the exploits of John Grider\, Elliott White Springs\, and Larry Callahan\, all known as the “Three Musketeers”. However\, it was later discovered in 1959 that Springs\, who later became president of Spring Cotton Mills\, Inc. and founder of Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, wrote and published the work in memory of his friend and other pilots who had died in the war. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, November 14th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2018. SUMMARY:Tom Poland: South Carolina Country Roads: Of Train Depots\, Filling Stations\, & Other Vanishing Charms
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by author Tom Poland on Saturday\, October 20th\, on his book South Carolina Country Roads: Of Train Depots\, Filling Stations & Other Vanishing Charms. \n“Venture off the beaten path to forgotten roads\, where a hidden South Carolina exists. Time-travel and dead-end at a ferry that leads to wild islands. Cross a rusting steel truss bridge into a scene from the 1930s. Behold an old gristmill and imagine its creaking\, clashing gears grinding corn. See an old gas pump wreathed in honeysuckle. Drive through a ghost town and wonder why it died. When’s the last time you saw a country store’s cured hams hanging from wires? How about a vintage Bull Durham tobacco ad on old brick? With vivid full-color photographs\, Tom Poland explores scenic backroads that lead to heirloom tomatoes\, poke salad\, restaurants once gas stations\, overgrown ruins and other soulful relics.” \nTom Poland’s work has appeared in magazines throughout the South. Among his recent books are Classic Carolina Road Trips from Columbia\, Georgialina\, A Southland\, As We Knew It\, and Reflections of South Carolina Vol. II. Swamp Gravy\, Georgia’s Official Folk Life Drama\, staged his play\, Solid Ground. He writes a weekly column for newspapers and journals in Georgia and South Carolina about the South\, its people\, traditions\, lifestyle and changing culture and speaks to groups across South Carolina and Georgia. Tom grew up in Lincoln County\, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia. He lives in Columbia\, South Carolina\, where he writes about “Georgialina\,” his name for eastern Georgia and South Carolina. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
