SUMMARY:The Battles of Fort Watson & Fort Motte\, 1781
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Steven Smith on his new book The Battles of Fort Watson & Fort Motte\, 1781 on Saturday\, August 8th at 1:00 PM. In his book\, Smith relates the history of four critical weeks from April 12 until May 12\, 1781\, in which the tide of the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War turned in favor of the Americans. The book focuses on General Francis Marion’s and Colonel Henry Lee’s capture of two key British forts\, Fort Watson and Fort Motte\, coordinating with Nathanael Greene in retaking the South Carolina backcountry. These posts defended the supply line between Charleston and the British-occupied villages of Camden and Ninety Six. Once the two forts were lost\, the British had to abandon the backcountry and were confined to Charleston and ultimately abandoned the city in December 1782. \nSteven D. Smith\, is a Research Professor\, Emeritus at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina.  He is the former Director of the Institute\, and has over 40 years’ experience in historical archaeology\, largely focused on military sites of the American Revolution in the South.  He has conducted excavations associated with Francis Marion and American Revolutionary War battlefields including the siege of Fort Motte\, Parker’s Ferry\, Black Mingo\, Snow’s Island\, Camden\, the siege of Ninety Six\, and the battle of Williamson’s Plantation.  He is the author or co-author of six books\, including\, Partisans\, Guerillas\, and Irregulars:  Historical Archaeology of Asymmetric Warfare\, 2019\, University of Alabama Press\, and Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community\, United Writers Press\, 2021.  His latest book\, coauthored with Colonel Kevin Dougherty\, is entitled Leading Like the Swamp Fox: The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion\, and The Battles of Fort Watson and Fort Motte\, 1781.  \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The End of the Road Bluegrass Band on Saturday\, August 15th at 1:00 PM. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway\, South Carolina. Formed in 2001\, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches\, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne\, Carolina Blue\, and The Virginia Luthiers. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I\, Freddie Stowers\, and Alvin York. Stowers\, a native of South Carolina\, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action while leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991\, and became the first African American soldier to receive the award in World War I. This lecture will cover The Formation of Chickamauga Towns: A Study of Cherokee Gender\, Kinship\, and Resistance in the Revolutionary Era. \nJamie Myers is as historian of American Indians of the Southeastern United States. She received her B.A. in history from Truett0McConnell University\, her M.A. from the University of North Georgia and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She is currently an associate professor of History at the University of North Carolina\, Pembroke\, where she teaches courses on American Indian history\, the history of global Indigenous peoples and the colonial and early American history. She is currently attending Coastal Carolina University pursuing a B.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Environmental and Cultural Sustainability of Indigenous Lands. \nCheryl has been a guest speaker\, presenter and panelist at college lecture series and community events\, as well as a consultant and contributor for academic publications and reports. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Charlie’s Place. This 30-minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century. Hurricane Hugo made landfall north of Charleston sometime around midnight September 22\, 1989. A category 4 storm\, Hugo caused significant damage along the South Carolina coast. The Grand Strand saw 12 foot high walls of water and almost every business along the coast had damage or was destroyed\, including three piers in Myrtle Beach. It’s estimated that at the time\, Hugo caused around $7 billion worth of damage to the area. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free bluegrass concert by Wire & Wood on Saturday\, September 26th at 1 PM. \nWire and Wood is\, first and foremost\, a group of friends who enjoy getting together and making music. The band features Tammy Holt on bass\, Jason Todd on mandolin\, Danny Newton on banjo\, Mike Monk on guitar\, and William Hardee on fiddle. Every member is a multi-instrumentalist and brings years of experience performing both close to home and on stages throughout the region\, including appearances alongside many well-known and accomplished professional musicians. \nYou never quite know what you’ll hear at a Wire and Wood show. Their repertoire moves from fast\, hard-driving bluegrass to gospel\, country\, and plenty in between\, with a focus on good songs\, strong picking and singing\, and having a good time making music together. In 2024\, the band welcomed Corey Anderson on vocals\, whose exceptional voice brings a dynamic new dimension to the group. \nSawgrass frequently features Grammy-nominated musician Jenni Lyn Gardner on mandolin and vocals. DESCRIPTION:“Horry County Museum to host Halloween screening and discussion of Blood Quantum” \nCelebrate Halloween with a different kind of zombie film. In partnership with the South Carolina Commission for Community Advancement and Engagement and the Native American Film & Video Festival of the Southeast\, the Horry County Museum will host a screening and discussion of the film Blood Quantum on October 31st at 1 PM. Blood Quantum combines intense horror with a powerful Indigenous perspective\, using the zombie genre to explore colonialism\, sovereignty\, intergenerational trauma\, cultural survival\, and the meaning of identity. Set in an alternate 1981\, a zombie plague spreads across the world\, but the Indigenous residents of the fictional Mi’kmaq reserve of Red Crow are mysteriously immune. As surrounding communities collapse\, tribal leaders must protect their people while confronting difficult questions about survival\, sanctuary\, identity\, and the legacy of colonization. This film is rated R for language\, violence and gore and is not suitable for all audiences. \nThe film will be followed by a community conversation focused on tribal sovereignty\, cultural survival\, and the ongoing fight against erasure. Using the film’s apocalypse metaphor as a starting point\, the discussion will explore how Indigenous communities have already endured historic efforts to remove\, assimilate\, redefine\, and erase Native peoples\, cultures\, governments\, and identities\, and how tribal communities continue to resist those forces today. \nThe conversation will also examine the idea that\, for many Indigenous communities\, “the apocalypse” is not simply a fictional future event\, but a useful metaphor for generations of colonization\, displacement\, cultural suppression\, and attacks on sovereignty. The discussion will center on how Native communities continue to rebuild\, preserve culture\, exercise sovereignty\, and ensure that their histories and identities remain visible for future generations. \nThis event will be held at the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C.
