SUMMARY:Tobacco Heritage Day
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the ‘one horse family farm’ from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Demonstrations will take place from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM and will include gathering\, hand tying and stringing tobacco\, and a variety of other activities including grinding grits and meal\, cooking on a wood stove\, and blacksmithing. \nThe L.W. SUMMARY:Fritz Hamer: German POWs in SC During WWII
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by Fritz Hamer on Saturday\, August 17th on World War II and the German POWs interned in South Carolina from 1943-1946. \nBy 1943 the Allies had begun to push the German Armies out of North Africa and Italy. In doing so they captured large numbers of German Prisoners of War. Great Britain could not handle them all so many were shipped to the United States starting in the summer of 1943. South Carolina became the home to nearly 10\,000 German POWs by 1945 (in all more than 375\,000 Germans were interned in the United States by 1945). Enlisted personnel were required to work for the nation that interned them so many were employed on farms\, pulp wood operations and military bases in non-military related occupations. Their work was crucial to SC farmers and pulp wood producers because so much of their normal labor had left to join the armed forces or work in war industries. Florence and Myrtle Beach had satellite camps for prisoners that numbered between 250 and 500 each. This presentation will discuss what these camps were like and how the prisoners adapted to their life in America. \nFritz Hamer is the Curator of History/Archivist of the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum in Columbia\, SC. He received his education at Acadia University in Wolfville\, Nova Scotia and the University of South Carolina. He has worked in the Museum field since the 1980s. He spent 25 years at the South Carolina State Museum as the Curator of History followed by a short time working at the South Caroliniana Library at USC before his present position. Over the years he has researched and helped develop many exhibitions and programs related to South Carolina and military history. Among several\, he curated an exhibition on SC and the Home Front in World War II and another on the same topic for World War I. Not only is his interest in military subjects but he also did an exhibition on College football history in the Palmetto State. Among some of his publications he has co-edited a series of articles on SC in the Civil War and Reconstruction\, published on the impact of the Charleston Navy Yard in World War II and published articles on South Carolina in the Great War. One of his favorite topics is the German prisoner of war experience in South Carolina during the Second World War for which he has published two articles. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:South Carolinians in WWII: Liberation
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolinians in WWII: Liberation.  This episode follows our veterans past the Battle of the Bulge and through the Siegfried Line as they battle their way into Germany to discover the horror of concentration camps. Combining first-person accounts of the holocaust survivors and veterans\, a distinct picture is drawn of the inhumanity that the Nazi command structure forced upon those they deemed undesirable. The stories are graphic and heartbreaking but tell a vivid story of heroism and the will to survive when surrounded by the horrors of war. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, September 11th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. SUMMARY:Lesta Sue Hardee: Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author Lesta Sue Hardee\, on Saturday\, September 14th on her book\, Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach. \nSimeon B. Chapin was an entrepreneur and visionary who\, along with Franklin G. Burroughs\, helped create the foundation of what is Myrtle Beach today. B.B. Benfield built and opened the area’s first movie theater\, and Lawrence Boulier was a landscape artist and founder of the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild. Earl Husted brought the first amusement park rides to this area\, and Anthony James left after high school to make a name for himself as the first widely known actor from the Myrtle Beach area. Some of these names may be unfamiliar\, but each of these legendary locals\, in his or her own way\, has helped make Myrtle Beach the historical hometown and vacationers’ paradise that it is today. \nLesta Sue Hardee\, a Myrtle Beach native\, is active in preserving the history of Myrtle Beach through oral history interviews and the archiving of materials that she comes across at work and during her personal genealogy and local research. She loves Myrtle Beach and is always willing to share a story or two. Besides Legendary Locals\, she is the coauthor of Myrtle Beach Pavilion. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
