SUMMARY:Jill Messier: My "1st" Quilt
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a variety of topics. In addition to the free programming\, you’ll have a chance to win a door prize at every event! Join us Friday\, March 8th at 11 AM as local quilter Jill Messier shows off a collection of “First Quilts” and shares the stories behind them. The collection is supplied by quilters from the Conway Quilt Guild and many remain with the person who first pieced them together. \nJill Messier moved to Conway from Enfield\, Connecticut in 2018 and arrived two days before Hurricane Florence. She began quilting in the 1970s after visiting a neighbor who quilts. Messier used the book Lap Quilting by Georgie Bonesteel to create a quilt in the Grandmother’s Fan pattern. After preparing and sewing the quilt by hand\, Messier soon found that she had a new hobby. She has currently finished nearly 100 quilts ranging in size from baby to king\, with all but 2 being quilted by hand. Many quilts have been kept or gifted to friends and family\, while some have won ribbons at shows. She also likes to use leftover material to create other items\, such as origami butterflies\, wallets\, cozies\, iPad covers and purses. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. Quilted items will include bed quilts\, wall hangings and placemats. Karen moved to Conway from Connecticut five years ago. Before retiring\, she worked as a receptionist at several Connecticut corporations and a pollster at Quinnipiac Polling Institute (CT) and Political Connections (SC).  An avid reader and now quilter\, her first two quilts were a memory quilt with her late mother’s shirts and a quilt made up of scraps from her late mother-in-law’s fabric leftovers. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Miss Springmaid.  This film\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, tells the story of World War I hero and legendary advertising savant Elliott White Springs\, who also founded Springmaid Beach in Myrtle Beach\, SC as a resort for his employees. SUMMARY:Louise Veverka: Pieces to Pieces\, Blocks to Blocks
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us March 13th at 2:00 PM for a presentation by local quilter Louise Veverka. \nEver wonder what those quilters are talking about when they use words like “flimsy”\, “sandwich”\, “batting and backing”\, “sashing and cornerstones”\, or even the letters HST\, WOF\, LOF? \nThis program is an introduction to quilt blocks and how they are constructed from pieces and the language used by quilters; along with piecing names that go into the standard blocks used to construct the quilt top. Topics will include Half Square Triangles\, Strips\, or Square in a Square\, and what it takes to make a “Log Cabin”\, or “Courthouse Steps” or “Cathedral Windows”. Become familiar with the terminology used while quilting and see some of the most used blocks. \nAn avid quilter\, Lou is the current president of Coastal Carolina Quilters\, and a member of the Grand Strand Quilters program committee\, along with being a member of Myrtle Beach Shorebirds Quilts of Valor. She has been quilting well over four decades and has been a longarmer for about ten years. \nLou is a Navy veteran and learned to sew in high school in New Jersey. She raised a family in Ohio and was owner/president of her own survey company\, “L.V. Surveying\, Inc.”. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a concert by the Saltwater Chamber Orchestra on Saturday\, March 16th at 1 PM. Join us for an afternoon of Irish themed music in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Comprised of volunteer members and performers\, Saltwater Chamber Orchestra boasts a robust season of concerts with quality music performance. The group began as a club in the Coastal Carolina OLLI program in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, and is now an independent chamber string orchestra. Their repertoire consists of classical and show/pop selections\, as well as selections for various holidays. Throughout the years since its founding\, the organization has performed along the Grand Strand coast of South Carolina\, sharing the comforting sounds of strings in the palmetto community. Venues have included churches\, schools\, libraries\, and museums\, as part of an ongoing concert series\, and for educational\, charitable\, and civic events. SUMMARY:Kathleen Armel: The 5 Oldest Quilt Blocks
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a range of topics. In addition to the free programming\, you’ll have a chance to win a door prize at every event! Join us Wednesday\, March 20th at 11 AM as local quilter Kathleen Armel presents the history behind some of the oldest known quilt blocks. Many of these blocks have been used in quilts over the years and are still found in modern sampler quilts today. \nKathleen’s quilt journey mirrors all the moves she and her husband made while she was employed by JC Penney\, and ending here in Conway\, with Belk. Starting in West Virginia\, and moving through Indiana/Kentucky\, New Hampshire\, Massachusetts\, Maine\, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Armel’s progress in quilting grew with every move\, and each quilt made has a story. Kathleen considers herself a traditionalist\, as she favors simple blocks and basic colors. At last count\, Armel’s home has over 74 quilts in it! Almost every room has a quilt or more. Kathleen is also one of the founding members of the Conway Quilt Guild\, which was started in 2013 by the late Kim Parker of Horry County Parks & Recreation Seniors Program. She is thrilled to see the group grow from 9 members to over 70 these past 9 years and feels that her piecing and quilting has grown even more with the sharing of knowledge this group shares! \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Fallen Heroes\, part of the Carolina Stories Series from ETV. This 30 minute film features the World War II stories of South Carolina natives William Farrow and Thomas Dry Howie. William Farrow was one of 80 airmen who volunteered to fly 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers in the Doolittle Raid\, taking off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier\, bombing Japan\, and then landing in China. Thomas Dry Howie was given command of the 3rd Battalion and sent to take the pivotal town of Saint-Lo in the Battle of Normandy and is remembered today as the “Major of Saint Lo”. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 20th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. Join us Friday\, March 22nd at 10 AM to view and hear the stories behind quilts made by Alice Kohl & Haydee Burgos. \nOriginally from New York\, Kohl moved to Myrtle Beach in 2018 and joined the Conway Quilt Guild in 2021. She began quilting at 55 and before that had never sewn or been around a sewing machine. Since then\, she has made many different kinds of quilts. \nHaydee Burgos was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York at 13. She retired to Conway in 2020 and also joined the Conway Quilters in 2021. Even though she’s only been quilting for two years\, she has fallen in love with the amazing world of quilting. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Dot Kenney: Get to Know Quilts of Valor
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us Tuesday\, March 26th at 11 AM as local quilters Dot Kenney and Joan Wobbleton share information about Quilts of Valor (QOV). Learn the history of QOV\, how to become involved and the basics of constructing quilts; from selecting the fabric through completion. There will also be a demonstration on stars and the opportunity for single star quilts to be taken home and completed. \nDot Kenney began sewing on a Singer trundle machine at the age of 10. She has made wedding\, prom\, and christening dresses and has sewn all her own clothes and made clothing for family and friends. She first heard about Quilts of Valor in January 2020 at a charity knitting class. Prior to QOV\, she had made one quilt\, but now makes toppers and helps with local presentations. \nJoan Wobbleton is a retired nurse practitioner who began quilting some 60 years ago when she watched her mother in law and her sisters sitting around a large wooden frame in her living room. They spent the day hand quilting and talking. Joan made one hand quilt almost 40 years ago and that was her last: “I found out a sewing machine was quicker and therefore I’ve made many quilts.” Joan and her husband Jim have been involved in the Quilts of Valor program since 2010 including starting the Myrtle Beach Shorebirds group. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles all month at the Horry County Museum. Join us for a program by Kathleen Armel on Thursday\, March 28th at 11 AM. Kathleen will show off a collection of small wall and kitchen quilts. \nKathleen’s quilt journey mirrors all the moves she and her husband made while she was employed by JC Penney\, and ending here in Conway\, with Belk. Starting in West Virginia\, and moving through Indiana/Kentucky\, New Hampshire\, Massachusetts\, Maine\, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Armel’s progress in quilting grew with every move\, and each quilt made has a story. Kathleen considers herself a traditionalist\, as she favors simple blocks and basic colors. At last count\, Armel’s home has over 74 quilts in it! Almost every room has a quilt or more. Kathleen is also one of the founding members of the Conway Quilt Guild\, which was started in 2013 by the late Kim Parker of Horry County Parks & Recreation Seniors Program. She is thrilled to see the group grow from 9 members to over 70 these past 9 years and feels that her piecing and quilting has grown even more with the sharing of knowledge this group shares! \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Chief Harold Hatcher to speak on the Waccamaw Indian People
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Chief Harold Hatcher on the Waccamaw Indian People on Saturday\, April 6th\, at 1:00 PM. This presentation will focus on the history of the Waccamaw Indian People from ancient times to today\, including their presence around the time of the Revolutionary War and in the Dimery Settlement. \nHarold D. Hatcher\, the eighth of nine children\, was born to Ms. Kathleen C. (Altman) and Mr. Claude L. Hatcher\, on May 27\, 1949. Hatcher joined the United States Army at the age of eighteen and remained in the military for the following 20 years. During his military career he served over eleven years with the elite 82nd Airborne Division\, including combat in the Republic of Vietnam. Among his over 21 medals and awards is a Purple Heart\, a Bronze Star of Valor\, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry\, Basic Airborne Wings and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He retired from the Army in 1988 at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Third Class\, educated in the field of Automotive Technology and Logistics. \nHatcher was elected as the Chief of the Waccamaw Indian Tribe in 1992 and has served for over 25 years in that position. Chief Hatcher raised two sons: Dalton\, who serves on the Waccamaw Tribal Council\, and Doug\, who serves as the tribe’s Web Master and computer consultant. He is also very proud of his daughter\, Carol who is a supervisor at Verizon. The Chief’s wife\, Susan Hayes-Hatcher also serves on the Tribal Council. \nIn 2014\, the Chief was elected for his fourth term as the Chairman of the South Carolina Indian Affairs Commission and has served in that position now for over twelve years. During his tenure as the chairman several changes to state laws were realized. These laws include regulations\, criteria\, and procedure for a Native entity to obtain official recognition in the state\, and laws that returned to Native Chiefs and religious leaders the right to perform marriages for their own people\, and the right to use game animal parts on traditional Native arts and crafts in the state. Chief Hatcher also chaired the National Coalition for Indian Equality\, which consisted of over 400 Native Groups and Tribes across the country. In 1994\, Chief Hatcher briefed then President William (Bill) Clinton on the plight of non-federal Indians in this country and achieved some relief in federal laws that separate non-federal Indians from other citizens of the United States. State wide\, he was worked closely with every Governor of South Carolina since Honorable Carol Campbell and had been recognized by a state legislative proclamation for his work on the Native American recognition project that resulted in Native American Recognition in the state of South Carolina. \nChief Hatcher is featured in three South Carolina School Social Studies text books\, At Home in South Carolina\, Let’s Learn about South Carolina and South Carolina\, and three state educational guides including Those Who Remain\, Indians of South Carolina and Strangers in Their Own Land. Additionally\, Hatcher is a primary character in the novels\, Fool Me Once\, The Buckskin General and How it Was. \nHatcher is sought as a speaker on Native Issues across the county and has shared a stage with presidential candidates Ross Perot\, John McCain\, Howard Dean and others. Hatcher was the keynote speaker for the Traveling Wall\, the Vietnam Veteran Memorial when it was brought to Myrtle Beach in 2007\, and was the keynote speaker for the Verizon workers conference at the Smithsonian Institute for the Native American\, in Washington\, DC\, in 2002. On the 23rd Day of February 2018\, Hatcher was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Award and shares that award with names such as Jimmy Carter\, John Glenn\, Colin Powell\, Oprah Winfrey and Condoleezza Rice. Hatcher was honored by the South Carolina National Guard in their first ever Cultural Unity Day\, a tradition he hopes will continue. On the 30th of June 2019 Hatcher was selected and honored during the South Carolina 2019 Celebration of Freedom. Joining him there were Governor McMaster\, Lt. Governor Evette\, State Attorney General Wilson\, MG McCarthy\, the State Adjutant \nGeneral and his staff\, LG General Beagle\, the Commanding General of Fort Jackson and others. This film\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, explores South Carolina’s ties with West Africa\, educating viewers about Gullah heritage\, including spiritual\, musical and artistic traditions. A sequel to SCETV’s 1990 documentary Family Across the Sea\, this film was produced by Betsy Newman and Xavier Blake\, and directed\, written and edited by Newman. The film aims to raise awareness about the Gullah Geechee community and its ties to West Africa.
