His 30 years of service to the Horry County/Myrtle Beach community in redeveloping the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and integrating it into the City of Myrtle Beach is exceptional.  The Order of the Palmetto is the highest award South Carolina can award to a citizen for service to the State. \nColonel Styers served in the United States Air Force for 26 years retiring in September 1992 in the rank of Colonel. His decorations include the Legion of Merit\, the Bronze Star Medal\, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal\, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters\, the Vietnam Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters\, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. SUMMARY:Uncommon Folk
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV film Uncommon Folk. \nThere are some artists that fall outside of the definition of fine art. Sometimes referred to as folk\, outsider\, visionary or memory artists\, most are driven to create something that has a special meaning to them. Some use objects from their own backyard\, or illustrate personal visions or cultural history\, while others use art to cope with life. Some are celebrated locally\, while the work of others goes unseen until their deaths. One thing they have in common is that they are destined to leave their impression on this world through their work. This film takes a look at some of South Carolina’s unique self-taught artists including Maxi McConnell Eades\, Reverend Johnnie Simmons\, L.C. Carson\, Sam Doyle\, Ernest Lee\, and Margaret Robbins. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, May 15th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. For a list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov.

SUMMARY:Carin Bloom: This Will Not Be Believed When It Is First Reported…
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program on the Battle of Sullivan’s Island from the British perspective by Carin Bloom on Saturday\, June 22nd\, at 1:00 PM. \nThe Continental Army’s victory over the might of the British Royal Navy on June 28\, 1776 – forever now enshrined as Carolina Day – had all the dramatic makings of a feature-length film. Hear the story of this disastrous defeat from a British Royal Navy sailor who saw the action first-hand. From failed piloting in the harbor (was it inexperience or intentional grounding?)\, to Army reinforcements that never landed\, to horrific destruction aboard the ships of the line – including injuries both serious and downright comical – there should never have been a question about the superiority of the British fighting force…and yet somehow\, 430-odd Continental soldiers held fast in their palmetto-logged fortress. Come hear the comedy of errors that never should have been; a riveting episode that left no stain on the bravery and intrepid enterprise of His Majesty’s Royal Navy\, though their loss was complete. \nCarin Bloom is a public historian with undergraduate and graduate degrees in historic sites archaeology – particularly sites of the American Revolution. Her passion over the past two decades has been sharing the hidden histories of the Colonial era with interested audiences through conventional and unconventional programs. Bringing diverse narratives to light that have been long ignored is a particular focus of hers\, and her portrayal as a sailor in the British Royal Navy is no exception. Carin is the Education Manager for Middleton Place Foundation in Charleston\, SC\, where she puts her passion to work every day for K-12 visitors\, as well as in planning and executing interpretive programming for learners of all ages and historical interests. \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with A True Likeness. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film tells the story of Richard Samuel Roberts\, a little-known African American photographer from South Carolina whose posthumous discovery transcended stereotypes and brought to light a significant legacy. SUMMARY:The South Carolina Dispensary System and the Bottles it Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Michael Lewis on the South Carolina Dispensary System on Saturday\, July 13th\, at 1:00 PM. \nSouth Carolina’s state-run liquor dispensary system lasted from 1893-1907. The first of its kind in North America\, the South Carolina Dispensary promised a middle of the road solution to liquor policy\, allowing people to drink but eliminating the side effects of gambling\, drunkenness and prostitution associated with saloons. Lewis tells the political rise and demise of the dispensary through the lens of how it played out in the town of North Augusta. Initially the town’s location across the river from Augusta Georgia (a dry city) created a financial windfall. Within a few years the political corruption associated with the dispensary led voters to adopt prohibition. \nMichael Lewis is a professor of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Newport News Virginia. He studies historical changes in alcohol regulation in the United States with a particular focus on state regulatory systems. In addition to “The Coming of Southern Prohibition” he is the coeditor of “Prohibition’s Greatest Myths: The Distilled Truth about America’s Anti-Alcohol Crusade.” \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. To view a full list of scheduled programs\, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Doug & The Doc to Perform at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by Doug & The Doc at the Horry County Museum on Saturday\, July 20th\, at 1:00 PM. The duo will perform a blend of musical styles featuring swing\, gypsy jazz\, Latin\, and originals – you might even hear a country or rock tune in this mix! With guitar\, bass\, and vocals\, Doug and Shelia perform in their own\, unique style. \nDoug Fankhauser\, an experienced guitarist and local teacher\, has performed for festivals\, restaurants\, private parties\, and on cruise ships. He utilizes the warm\, smooth sound of a nylon-stringed guitar to offer versatility in his arrangements of cover tunes as well as his original music. \n“Doug and the Doc” was formed when Doug suggested to his wife\, Shelia\, that he give her a bass guitar lesson. Shelia\, a family physician\, grew up playing piano and always had a love and passion for music. The lesson clicked and now “Doug and the Doc” perform with guitar\, bass\, and vocals. Doug and Shelia live in Murrells Inlet with their golden doodle\, Lilly\, who fortunately likes music too! \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526.
