SUMMARY:The South Carolina Dispensary System and the Bottles it Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Michael Lewis on the South Carolina Dispensary System on Saturday\, July 13th\, at 1:00 PM. \nSouth Carolina’s state-run liquor dispensary system lasted from 1893-1907. The first of its kind in North America\, the South Carolina Dispensary promised a middle of the road solution to liquor policy\, allowing people to drink but eliminating the side effects of gambling\, drunkenness and prostitution associated with saloons. Lewis tells the political rise and demise of the dispensary through the lens of how it played out in the town of North Augusta. Initially the town’s location across the river from Augusta Georgia (a dry city) created a financial windfall. Within a few years the political corruption associated with the dispensary led voters to adopt prohibition. \nMichael Lewis is a professor of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Newport News Virginia. He studies historical changes in alcohol regulation in the United States with a particular focus on state regulatory systems. In addition to “The Coming of Southern Prohibition” he is the coeditor of “Prohibition’s Greatest Myths: The Distilled Truth about America’s Anti-Alcohol Crusade.” \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. To view a full list of scheduled programs\, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Doug & The Doc to Perform at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by Doug & The Doc at the Horry County Museum on Saturday\, July 20th\, at 1:00 PM. The duo will perform a blend of musical styles featuring swing\, gypsy jazz\, Latin\, and originals – you might even hear a country or rock tune in this mix! With guitar\, bass\, and vocals\, Doug and Shelia perform in their own\, unique style. \nDoug Fankhauser\, an experienced guitarist and local teacher\, has performed for festivals\, restaurants\, private parties\, and on cruise ships. He utilizes the warm\, smooth sound of a nylon-stringed guitar to offer versatility in his arrangements of cover tunes as well as his original music. \n“Doug and the Doc” was formed when Doug suggested to his wife\, Shelia\, that he give her a bass guitar lesson. Shelia\, a family physician\, grew up playing piano and always had a love and passion for music. The lesson clicked and now “Doug and the Doc” perform with guitar\, bass\, and vocals. Doug and Shelia live in Murrells Inlet with their golden doodle\, Lilly\, who fortunately likes music too! \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. To view a full list of scheduled programs\, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Tobacco Heritage Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:See history come to life at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! The Farm will host its annual Tobacco Heritage Day on Saturday\, August 3rd from 9 AM-Noon. For much of the 20th century\, tobacco was the main cash crop for Horry County and the Pee Dee Region and provided an income for many farm families in the area. Demonstrations will include gathering\, hand tying and stringing tobacco\, cooking on the wood burning stove\, and a variety of other farm activities. \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway\, SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call the L.W. SUMMARY:SCETV documentary\, Juke Joints and Honkytonk Legends
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV documentary\, Juke Joints and Honkytonk Legends. \nTheir “Gaillard Auditoriums” are large\, non-descript rooms with wooden tables\, metal chairs\, and a bar. This film is an excursion into a larger than life culture with roots that trace back to traditional African and folk music. It explores this nonconformist genre and the people who seek to preserve it. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, August 7th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. SUMMARY:Paul Lopes as Corporal Clark\, a Coy Tailor
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a first person presentation by Paul Lopes as British Corporal Clarke\, a Coy Tailor\, on September 7th at 1 PM. As Corporal Clark of Lt. Col. Webster’s Company\, of Lord Cornwallis’s 33rd Regiment of Foot\, Lopes brings a sometimes tongue and cheek perception of the daily ins and outs of the lives of King George’s Men at Arms during the 1700s; with particular focus on the rebellion in the colonies. \nA living historian for over 25 years in both the 17th & 18th centuries in respect to the military material culture of the periods\, Lopes brings his observations as Corporal Clarke of the King’s Finest Regiment to light\, known as “The Pattern”\, to a public that might only know one side of the conflict. Over the years\, Lopes has worked with both military and civilian museums on reproduction projects and research and has been able to go ‘behind the scenes’ to study the inner workings of the vast collections that these sites have at their disposal that few in the general public might never see. \nThe program will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. SUMMARY:Elizabeth Chew: South Carolina History is American History
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Elizabeth Chew\, CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society\, on Saturday\, September 14th\, at 1:00 PM. A historian\, curator\, and educator\, she has worked at museums and historic sites since 1985. \nPrior to arriving in Charleston\, she served as Executive Vice President and Chief Curator at James Madison’s Montpelier in Virginia. SUMMARY:Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold Returns to the Blues
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the documentary\, Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold Returns to the Blues. Southpaw bassist and South Carolina native Mac Arnold was only ten years old when he and his brother built a guitar out of a gas can\, a couple strips of wood\, a handful of nails\, and some screen wire. Arnold played in J. Floyd & the Shamrocks (who frequently featured a young James Brown on piano) while still in high school\, and officially began his professional career when he joined Charles Miller’s band in the early ’60s. He moved to Chicago around 1965 and began working with saxophonist A.C. Reed before hooking up with Muddy Waters and his band in 1966. The Waters stint led to a fair amount of studio work\, and Arnold played bass on several 1960s blues albums\, including Otis Spann’s The Blues Is Where It’s At and John Lee Hooker’s Live at Cafe Au Go Go. By the 1980s Arnold had tired of the road and moved back to South Carolina\, settling in his hometown of Pelzer\, where for all practical purposes he retired from the music business. A group of local musicians kept after him to start performing again\, though\, which led to Arnold eventually fronting his own band\, Mac Arnold & Plate Full o’ Blues. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, September 18th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024.
