SUMMARY:Chris Boyle-Lowcountry Agricultural & Convivial Societies.
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author and historian Christopher Boyle on Saturday\, April 23rd\, on his new book Lowcountry Agricultural and Convivial Societies \n“Throughout the first century of South Carolina’s settlement\, rice was an important crop but the rice industry did not experience its first boom until the 1720s and 1730s. This book explores the purpose of the social organizations as well as the moral\, economic\, cultural\, and political challenges of the Antebellum Georgetown rice planters. Within the protected confines of their organizations\, planters felt safe discussing local and national politics\, advancements to their educational system\, and agricultural and livestock improvements to better compete with the Industrial North. The alliance of “brothers of the soil” helped solidify South Carolina’s Lowcountry politically. The agricultural alliances of the region promoted Southern Nationalism and provided one pillar for Southerners to the American Civil War.” \nChristopher C. Boyle is the international baccalaureate history teacher at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, and a part-time teaching associate at Coastal Carolina University in Conway. Upon graduation from Coastal Carolina University with his bachelor’s degree in history\, he further studied history at Winthrop University where he graduated in 1996 with his Master of Arts degree in American history. In addition to having written numerous articles for scholarly journals\, Boyle is the author of Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River and The Road to Secession in Antebellum Georgetown & Horry Districts.  \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. In 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Fallen Heroes\, part of the Carolina Stories Series from ETV. This 30 minute film features the World War II stories of William Farrow and Thomas Dry Howie. William Farrow was one of 80 airmen who volunteered to fly 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers in the Doolittle Raid\, taking off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier\, bombing Japan\, and then landing in China. In this session\, SCELP Executive Director Amy Armstrong will talk about how this landmark law became a crucial legal tool to address water pollution and destruction across the county\, including our very own Waccamaw River. However\, 50 years after the inception of the Clean Water Act\, our lakes\, rivers and wetlands remain under threat due to legislative rollbacks\, unrelenting development interests and climate change. Learn how you can take action to protect your waters and your community. \nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY \nAmy Armstrong is the Executive Director of the South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP)\, a nonprofit environmental law organization. She started working for SCELP in September 2002\, after receiving a competitive two-year fellowship from Equal Justice Works\, formerly the National Association of Public Interest Law.

DESCRIPTION:Brenda Grampsas\, Certified Quilt Appraiser asks\, “Don’t you just love all the cute items purchased and made for a new baby in your family or circle of friends?”  One of the reasons baby showers are so fun is the wonderful gift items we all ooh and ah over. Baby & children’s quilts often give us a warm\, fuzzy feeling and this trunk show features many vintage/antique quilts and coverlets from Brenda’s personal collection that do just that. Join us on March 24th at 1 PM for a trip down memory lane. You may be inspired to make your next baby or child’s gift a quilt. \nBrenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser\, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service. SUMMARY:Featured Quilter: Kay Rutherford
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us Wednesday\, March 23rd at 10 AM as local quilter Kay Rutherford shares a variety of rag quilts\, long arm\, and hand and machine embroidered quilts from her personal collection. She will also feature several quilts hand quilted by her mother. \nKay Rutherford’s quilting history began twenty years ago when the women at the hospital she had retired from were making totes and pillows for cancer patients. Kay decided to join the group. Her first quilt didn’t quite turn out as expected when the person who quilted it used large roses in his quilting. Rutherford was so upset with the quilt that she donated it to Goodwill. Kay then started taking classes at a quilting shop in Chillicothe\, Ohio. This led her to joining a quilt group at home in West Virginia. Kay joined the Conway Quilters whenever she and her husband moved to South Carolina permanently three years ago. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us Tuesday\, March 22nd at 11 AM as local quilter Kathleen Armel shares quilts from her personal collection. Kathleen has been married for 45 years\, and has been piecing and quilting for 44 of those years! Her college roommate\, Brenda\, introduced her to quilting in October of 1977 when she took Armel to her favorite quilt shop\, The Quilt Patch\, in Fairfax City\, Va. \nKathleen’s quilt journey mirrors all the moves she and her husband made while she was employed by JC Penney\, and ending here in Conway\, with Belk. Starting in West Virginia\, and moving through Indiana/Kentucky\, New Hampshire\, Massachusetts\, Maine\, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Armel’s progress in quilting grew with every move\, and each quilt made has a story. Kathleen considers herself a traditionalist\, as she favors simple blocks and basic colors. At last count\, Armel’s home has over 74 quilts in it! Almost every room has a quilt or more. \nKathleen is also one of the founding members of the Conway Quilt Guild\, which was started in 2013 by the late Kim Parker of Horry County Parks & Recreation Seniors Program. She is thrilled to see the group grow from 9 members to over 70 these past 9 years and feels that her piecing and quilting has grown even more with the sharing of knowledge this group shares! \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Judy Lyons: The Many Facets of Fabric Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us Friday\, March 18th at 1 PM for a presentation by local textile artist\, Judy Lyons. Judy will describe the fascinating world of fabric dyeing and show the audience many techniques to achieve a variety of results. Some techniques include basic dyeing\, cross dyeing\, resists\, shibori\, ice dyeing\, painting dye\, parfait dyeing\, and uses for your hand dyed fabric. She will also bring some of her quilts that she made from her dyed fabrics and show examples of printing on dyed fabrics. \nJudy Lyons has a degree in Textiles from RIT\, School for American Craftsmen. There she learned to weave\, spin\, and dye anything and everything fiber related. While raising three kids in Maryland\, she started her first business\, Sunflower Hill Dyers in 1998. Her hand dyed fabrics were sold at quilt shows up and down the East Coast as well as Houston\, TX. But life\, and three kids playing competitive hockey\, got in the way and she had to close the business. She also taught Quilt in a Day and dyeing classes for the county’s continuing education program. In 2015\, Lyons and her husband retired to South Carolina and she finally had time to put into her dyeing again. Dyeing for Happy Hour was created and she started with hand dyed clothing. Then\, she started fabric dyeing again and has sold her hand dyed fabrics at quilt shows in the area. Lyons has also hosted weekend Dye Camps that teach many facets of dyeing. Her quilt kits are also sold on her Etsy shop under Dyeing for Happy Hour. Lyons also makes art quilts and enjoys fabric printing on gel plates and mixed media pieces. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. Join us Thursday\, March 17th at 1 PM as local quilter Joan Wobbleton shares about Quilts of Valor and talks about quilts from her personal collection. \nJoan Wobbleton is a retired nurse practitioner who began quilting some 60 years ago when she watched her mother in law and her sisters sitting around a large wooden frame in her living room. They spent the day hand quilting and talking. Joan made one hand quilt 36 years ago and that was her last: “I found out a sewing machine was quicker and therefore I’ve made many quilts.” Joan and her husband Jim have been involved in the Quilts of Valor program since 2010 including starting the Myrtle Beach Shorebirds group. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Museum Matinee: Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays.\nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He would become president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades would reach far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays would fulfill. Interviewees include Andrew Young\, Hank Aaron\, Mays’ great niece Dr. Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp\, and Dr. Robert Franklin.\nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 16th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.\nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2022. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Countless quilt designs made by our ancestors are still being made today.  Join us on March 15th at 1 PM as Brenda Grampsas presents quilts from her collection of antique and vintage quilts with modern examples of those same designs.  Quilt designs we love today were loved in by gone eras.  Be inspired to make your own updated version of a quilt that our Grandmothers made so long ago. \nBrenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser\, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service.
