DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays. \nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He became president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades reached far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays fulfilled. DESCRIPTION:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm \nA large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane was gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice was squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 18th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. \nIn 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W. SUMMARY:Just Sharing: Building Community through Stories of Our Past
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a panel discussion of the South Carolina Humanities Council Program: “Just Sharing: Building Community through Stories of Our Past” on Saturday\, December 2nd at 1 PM. \n“Just Sharing” is a series of panel discussions in communities across South Carolina held from September 2023 through June 2024. This project is a partnership of the South Carolina Humanities\, the University of South Carolina\, and Clemson University. Historians from USC & Clemson will join a local historian in sharing stories from South Carolina’s past. The moderated panel discussion will also include time for audience participation after the presentations. \nPresentations at the Horry County Museum will include “How Briggs v. Elliott Became Brown v. Board” by Dr. Vernon Burton from Clemson University\, “Reconstruction: Its History\, Meaning and Legacy” by Christian Anderson from USC\, and local historian Rev. Dr. Cheryl Moore-Adamson will speak on how the African American community has come together in the face of adversity in Horry County’s history. \nChristian K. Anderson\, Ph.D.\, is a professor of higher education at the University of South Carolina. His research areas include the history of higher education\, comparative higher education\, and how colleges and universities are depicted in popular culture. He has written about faculty governance\, student protests\, college athletics\, and Reconstruction Era University of South Carolina. Anderson was co-director of an NEH summer institute on Reconstruction in 2021 for teachers from around the country. \nOrville Vernon Burton\, Ph.D.\, is Judge Matthew J. Perry Distinguished Chair of History and Professor of Global Black Studies\, Sociology and Anthropology\, and Computer Science at Clemson University. His current research focuses on American race relations and community. Burton’s co-authored Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court (2021) was deemed “authoritative and highly readable” by The Nation.  In 2022 he received the Southern Historical Association’s John Hope Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award. \nCheryl Moore Adamson was born in Hartsville\, South Carolina and grew up in Conway\, where she graduated from Conway High School in 1970. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in health education from the University of Maryland at College Park. She graduated from Duke Divinity School with the Master of Divinity Degree in 2002. Adamson formerly worked as chaplain with Mercy Hospice and in 2006 founded the Palmetto Missionary Baptist Church of Conway\, South Carolina. \nAdamson has served on the board of the Waccamaw Community Foundation\, the Baptist House of Studies at Duke Divinity School\, the National Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship\, and the Waccamaw American Leadership Forum. She is founder and Executive Director of the Palmetto Works Community Development Corporation\, the umbrella organization for Palmetto Kids! Music and Arts Academy\, the Palmetto Youth Leadership Academy\, and CHOPS Produce\, a produce store serving a USDA-certified food desert. In addition\, she is the president of the newly established Whittemore Racepath Historical Society\, Incorporated\, organized to save and revitalize the Whittemore Elementary School\, an equalization school slated for demolition and subsequently burned in March of 2023. \nReverend Adamson has been married to Dr. James Wellington Adamson\, a retired internal medicine physician\, for 47 years. She is the mother of Mary Louise Adeogun and James Jamaal Adamson and the happy grandmother of 4-year-old Cheryl Asua Adeogun and 3-year-old Jordon Adamson. \nThis program is free and open to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway\, SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Chicken Bog: The Chicken Bog King of the Pee Dee.  \nIn Latta\, South Carolina in the historic Pee Dee region\, a southern stew tradition that served the appetites of rural families located in the swamp communities of Lowcountry South Carolina\, is maintained by the Mayor of Latta who has long held the mantle of “Chicken Bog King of the Pee Dee”. Filmmaker Stan Woodward follows him as he and his crew prepare a chicken bog (chicken\, rice and secret ingredients only known to the stewmaster) for serving at a stump meeting rally for a local US Congressman running for re-election. SUMMARY:Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series concludes with Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry. This film explores various primitive religious camp meetings-the earliest founded in the late 1700s by the horseback evangelist\, Bishop Francis Asbury\, along with African American evangelist\, Harry Hosier\, who rode with him to conduct “brush arbor” worship services for white planters and those enslaved on their plantations. In the Dorchester County pine forests of South Carolina these camp-meetings have “tents” built and owned by long-standing extended families from their respective communities. The campgrounds are all located within a 20 mile radius of each other near St. George\, SC. At five different times each year these camp-meetings draw more than 3\,000 congregants from extended families and friends of families nationwide. These congregants stay for a week and are invited to the “tents” of family members\, the worship services\, and to enjoy the Southern home-cooked meals prepared 3-times-a-day on wood stoves in each tent during the seven days of camp-meeting. The Rebels & Redcoats series tells the untold story of the American Revolution from an unusual point of view\, that of the British losers. Yet it also explores painful conflicts within the American people themselves. In The World Turned Upside Down\, the British have enjoyed command of the sea\, and with it the ability to move thousands of troops to wherever they are needed. But now an extraordinary naval blunder allows the French fleet to isolate a large British garrison at Yorktown. Surrender is inevitable\, giving overall victory to Washington and his French allies. SUMMARY:Jim Piecuch: The South Carolina Provincial Troops
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the Theodosia Burr Chapter of the National Society\, Daughters of the American Revolution present a series on Unique Voices from the Revolutionary War in South Carolina. Join us at the Horry County Museum on January 6th at 1 PM as Jim Piecuch gives a lecture on the South Carolina Provincial Troops. This presentation will trace the origins of the South Carolina Provincial Troops from the 1775 backcountry civil war to the formation of the South Carolina Royalists in 1778. Dr. Piecuch will review the campaigns of the Royalists\, discuss the creation of the South Carolina Rangers and that unit’s operations\, and review the creation and activities of the SC Provincial Light Dragoons from their organization in 1781. The units will be covered through their withdrawal with the rest of the British forces in 1782 with a brief look at some of the postwar activities of these Loyalist veterans. \nJim Piecuch earned B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of New Hampshire and a Ph.D. in history from the College of William & Mary in Virginia. He is a former professor of history and the author of several books including South Carolina Provincials: Loyalists in British Service during the American Revolution\, Seven Myths of the American Revolution\, The Battle of Camden; Three Peoples\, One King: Loyalists\, Indians\, and Slaves in the Revolutionary South; biographies of Revolutionary officers John Eager Howard and Henry Lee\, and Cavalry in the American Revolution. He has also published numerous articles and book chapters on colonial and Revolutionary history and worked as an editor on several historical encyclopedias. \nThis lecture is made possible by a grant from The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Jail\, No Bail\, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. In January of 1961\, black students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill\, SC walked into McCrory’s\, sat at the lunch counter\, and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. They were denied service and asked to leave. After refusing to leave\, the students were arrested for trespassing and processed. This 30 minute program pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the ‘Friendship Nine’ sit-in protest that inspired the Jail\, No Bail Movement\, a strategy which turned the tables on the establishment and reinvigorated the National Civil Rights Movement. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 10th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. SUMMARY:Mister Hawg: A Hash Opera
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Mister Hawg: A Hash Opera. After recovering from a stroke that appeared to have ended his career\, Stan Woodward recovered to complete the editing of Mister Hawg-a film that had been shot in 2003 but had never been edited. He retrieved footage from his archive before suffering the stroke in 2017. By 2018\, the editing was complete. The film tells the story of two brothers who cook and sell their famous BBQ\, sausage and hash at their facility deep in the woods of Fairfield County\, SC once a month and on the Fourth of July. Customers come regularly from as far away as Alabama to buy the hash and BBQ. In viewing the footage\, Stan decided to introduce a score from an opera to underscore the artistry of these two brothers. This unique story of two men with full-time jobs who love to come together once a month to keep their customers happy and cook BBQ and hash is a fitting finish to Woodward’s long career of capturing the untold story of Southern foodways and the folks who cook it. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 17th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. SUMMARY:Smokehouse Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 20th from 9 AM and 12 PM at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! The public is invited to experience how families would have prepared pork to be preserved on a typical Horry County Farm in the early 1900s. Winter was a season when the farm family was often dependent on home preserved foods\, and the perfect time of year for curing pork. Once the meat was cured\, families could not only eat the pork during the winter season\, but also throughout the year. No part of the animal was wasted on the farm\, from using the fat to render into lard\, to creating dishes like chitterlings\, hog head cheese\, or even pickled pig’s feet! Demonstrations include the carving and preparation of pork\, salting and curing meat in the smokehouse\, rendering lard\, cooking demos\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. SUMMARY:Kevin Kokomoor: La Florida: Catholics\, Conquistadores\, and Other American Origin Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Kevin Kokomoor\, Ph.D. on his book\, La Florida on Saturday\, January 27th at 1 PM. La Florida explores a Spanish thread to early American history that is unfamiliar or even unknown to most Americans. By focusing on America’s Spanish heritage\, this collection of stories challenges how Americans view their past and uncovers the Spanish\, not English\, influence that drove America’s early history. The book digs into Hispanic and Caribbean history\, and how important events in the Spanish colonial world influenced the discovery and colonization of the American Southeast. Learn how Spanish colonialism in Florida sparked British plans for colonization of the continent and influenced some of the most enduring traditions of the larger Southeast. \nKevin Kokomoor is a fourth generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. His first academic position after graduate school was at Coastal Carolina University where he is currently employed. Kokomoor recently published Of One Mind and One Government: The Rise and Fall of the Creek Nation in the Early Republic with the University of Nebraska Press. He has also authored several articles in academic journals\, including Journal of Southern History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, Florida Historical Quarterly\, Journal of Sport History\, and Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. He won the Thompson Award for the best article published in Florida Historical Quarterly in 2009 and the E. Merton Coulter Award for the best article published in Georgia Historical Quarterly in 2013. In 2017 he was the Howard H. Peckham Fellow of Revolutionary America at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. Join us for a lecture by Reverend Dr. Paul Wood\, Jr. on Saturday\, February 3rd at 1 PM.  Dr. Wood will speak on Laodicea “Dicey” Langston and her many acts of bravery as a Patriot in Laurens County\, South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. As a teenager\, Dicey was a spy and defender of her home and family as she risked her life for the Patriot cause. \nThe Rev. Dr. Paul A. Wood\, Jr. holds a B. A. from Furman University\, a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School\, and a Doctor of Ministry from Candler School of Theology\, Emory University.  He is a retired United Methodist minister who served churches throughout South Carolina from 1980 until 2017. Upon his retirement\, Dr. Wood became a historian of the American Revolution in South Carolina. He specializes in Dicey Langston Springfield\, South Carolina’s renowned heroine of the American Revolution. Dr. Wood is writing a biography of William “Bloody Bill” Cunningham\, who became the state’s most prolific murderer during the Revolution. \nThis lecture is made possible by a grant from The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission. DESCRIPTION:Join us from 10 AM until noon on Saturday\, February 10th as Logan Woodle demonstrates repousse techniques in the Blacksmith Shop. Woodle is an assistant professor and Chair of the department of visual arts at Coastal Carolina University. He is a silversmith and educator who lives on his family farm in Conway\, S.C. Woodle earned a B.F.A. in sculpture from Winthrop University in 2009 and an M.F.A. in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2012. Today you can find Logan teaching all things three-dimensional at Coastal Carolina University. His own work deals with the mythologies that grow like weeds in the agrarian South and has been featured in galleries and museums across the country and in the award-winning book Humor in Craft by Brigitte Martin. \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm re-creates life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 through traditional farming activities.
