SUMMARY:Saltwater Chamber Orchestra: Christmas Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents an afternoon of Christmas music performed by the Saltwater Chamber Orchestra on Saturday\, December 7th at 1 PM. Comprised of volunteer members and performers\, Saltwater Chamber Orchestra boasts a robust season of concerts with quality music performances. The group began as a club in the Coastal Carolina OLLI program in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, and is now an independent chamber string orchestra. Their repertoire consists of classical and show/pop selections\, as well as selections for various holidays. Throughout the years since its founding\, the organization has performed along the Grand Strand coast of South Carolina\, sharing the comforting sounds of strings in the palmetto community. Venues have included churches\, schools\, libraries\, and museums\, as part of an ongoing concert series\, and for educational\, charitable\, and civic events. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays. \nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He became president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades reached far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays fulfilled. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: The Bigham Family Murders: Three Trials and a Family History
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 4th at 1 pm at the Horry County Museum to learn about South Carolina’s sensational murder trial of the 20th century and the family behind it. The Bigham Family was a prominent family in Marion and Florence Counties often whispered about and feared by their neighbors. Throughout 6 generations of the family living in SC\, a number of the members were accused of circumventing the law\, murdering family members and workers\, and general unpleasantness\, culminating in the events of January 15\, 1921 where 5 members of the family were killed. The surviving member of the family\, Edmund Bigham\, was put on trial for the murders and was tried three separate times\, once in Florence County and twice in Conway\, SC\, all while maintaining that it was his brother\, Smiley\, who had killed his family then taken his own life. This talk will detail the family history of the Bighams and the trials of Edmund Bigham. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. In 2020\, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant and moved into the Curator position in 2022. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program about the history of Myrtle Beach Air Force Base by the Museum’s Technical Assistant\, Tom Strebeck on Saturday\, January 11th\, at 1:00 PM. Strebeck will discuss the operations of Myrtle Beach Army Air Field during World War II\, how units from Myrtle Beach Air Force Base served during the Cold War\, and the redevelopment of the area after the Base closed in 1993. \nTom Strebeck grew up in North Louisiana and moved to South Carolina for graduate school in 2021. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University and a Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. He has volunteered or interned at the North Louisiana Military Museum\, George Washington’s Mount Vernon\, Old Sturbridge Village\, and the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV film The Education of Harvey Gantt. This 30 minute film tells the story of Harvey Gantt\, the first African American student to attend a formerly all-white school in South Carolina. \nSouth Carolina fought the desegregation of its schools longer than any other state\, even after the passage of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. In 1960\, a talented African American student from Charleston\, Harvey Gantt\, graduated from high school and decided to become an architect. Clemson College was the only school in South Carolina that offered a degree in his chosen field. In January of 1963\, with the help of NAACP lawyer Matthew J. SUMMARY:Smokehouse Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 25th from 9 AM-Noon at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! The public is invited to experience how families would have prepared pork to be preserved on a typical Horry County Farm in the early 1900s. Winter was a season when the farm family was often dependent on home preserved foods\, and the perfect time of year for curing pork. Once the meat was cured\, families could not only eat the pork during the winter season\, but also throughout the year. No part of the animal was wasted on the farm\, from using the fat to render into lard\, to creating dishes like chitterlings\, hog head cheese\, or even pickled pig’s feet! Demonstrations include the carving and preparation of pork\, salting and curing meat in the smokehouse\, rendering lard\, cooking demos\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. Even after his death in 1945\, his philosophy lives on. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with A True Likeness. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film tells the story of Richard Samuel Roberts\, a little-known African American photographer from South Carolina whose posthumous discovery transcended stereotypes and brought to light a significant legacy. Heralded as one of the south’s most accomplished photographers of the 1920’s and 1930’s\, Roberts was a self-taught artist who was determined to become a master portrait maker\, with every image a true likeness of the subject. SUMMARY:Looking Outward\, Looking Inward: Local\, Regional\, and National News as Reported in The Horry Dispatch\, 1861-1862
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Professor John Navin and Coastal Carolina University students on Saturday\, February 8th\, at 1:00 PM. The students\, part of the Prince Fellows program at CCU\, will discuss key findings from their research involving nineteen issues of The Horry Dispatch –the only newspaper published in Horry County during the first year of the Civil War. \nTaylor Pierce is a lifelong resident of the Myrtle Beach area. She is currently a senior at Coastal Carolina University\, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in history with minors in war & society and social studies. She is deeply interested in civil liberties\, societal expectations\, and the various pressures and injustices faced by specific groups during the 18th century\, particularly women and religious sects. Taylor aspires to further her education and develop a career in archival studies\, helping to preserve and interpret historical narratives. \nJordan Blazer is a graduate student at Coastal Carolina University\, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in History in 2024 with minors in Political Science and Religious Studies. Originally from Detroit\, Michigan\, she has called South Carolina home since 2007. Jordan belongs to the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society and as an undergraduate was a frequent President’s List awardee. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree at CCU\, building on her exploration of how historical events shape contemporary political and religious dynamics. \nKailani-Lee D’Antuono is originally from North Wildwood\, New Jersey.  She received her Associate’s degree from Horry Georgetown Technical College and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in History with minors in Women and Gender Studies and Social Studies. Kailani’s goal is to earn a Master’s degree and teach High School Social Studies. She is an entrepreneur\, operating a design and jewelry business in Conway\, and enjoys spending time with her friends\, family\, and pets. \nConnor Mojo is in his Junior year at Coastal Carolina University where he majors in both political science and history; he is also pursuing a minor in Philosophy. Having been raised in Conway\, Connor is especially interested in local history and in history of the colony of South Carolina.  In 2023-2024 he received the Coley B. Prather Scholarship in Lowcountry History.  Mojo plans to continue his studies in graduate school and eventually become a professor. \nProf. John Navin is advisor to the current Prince Fellows project. He joined CCU’s Department of History in 1999. Navin earned his Master’s Degree at Boston College and his Ph.D. at Brandeis University. SUMMARY:Dr. Walter Curry: South Carolina African American Confederate Pensioners
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Dr. Walter Curry on African American Confederate pensioners from South Carolina on Saturday\, February 15th\, at 1:00 PM. This presentation examines the factors that led South Carolina to employ African American labor during the American Civil War\, the various functions that this labor fulfilled\, the state’s endorsement of Confederate pensions for African Americans\, significant aspects of the pension application process\, and prominent African American Confederate pensioners from South Carolina\, particularly those hailing from Horry County and the Pee Dee Region. \nDr. Walter B. Curry\, Jr.\, is a native of Orangeburg\, South Carolina. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from South Carolina State University\, and has earned graduate degrees in education\, which includes a doctorate degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Argosy University\, Sarasota. In 2018\, he launched Renaissance Publications\, LLC.\, a self-publishing company\, through which Dr. Curry publishes his books that focus on African American history through ancestry. Most recently\, he has rebranded his company to Renaissance Publications\, LLC. \nDr. Curry has published two award winning books\, The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from the Past (1830-1960)\, and The Awakening: The Seawright-Ellison Family Saga\, Vol.1\, A Narrative History. Both books consist of stories that cover the lineage of Dr. Curry’s ancestry from slavery\, The Civil War\, The Reconstruction Era\, and family life in Aiken\, Orangeburg\, Richland Counties and beyond. He has done book signings and presentations at local conferences\, workshops\, bookstores\, and schools across the state and nationwide. His third book\, South Carolina’s Matilda Evans: A Medical Pioneer\, which is the biography of the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina\, will be released on April 8th\, 2025. \nAdditionally\, Dr. Curry is the curator of Ancestral Reflections: The Thompson Family\, an exhibit consisting of eight paintings that feature the individual experiences of enslaved relatives\, including a woman who served in the Civil War; and individual agricultural and civic activities during past times in rural low country South Carolina. Inspired by stories from Dr. Curry’s award-winning book The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from The Past (1830-1960). \nDr. Curry is the Author-In-Residence at the Aiken Center for the Arts located in Aiken\, SC. As an Author-In-Residence\, he provides learning engagements though exhibits to Aiken County Public Schools that bring the stories from his books to life. He has received numerous accolades for his work and service which includes two African American Historical and Genealogy Society book awards; legislative resolutions from the South Carolina General Assembly for his significant work in service to African American History and Heritage in South Carolina; Literary Titan Gold Awards; a recipient of the Martha Schofield “Work The Legacy” Award; member of the Inaugural South Carolina State University 40 Under 40; and selected as a 2022 Richland Two School District Black History Month honoree. He also serves as a member of the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum Commission\, the South Carolina Arts Directory\, and the South Carolina Humanities Speakers Bureau. Dr. Curry is also a Certified Interpreter Guide through the National Association for Interpretation. \nDr. Curry currently lives in Columbia\, South Carolina with his wife\, Takiyah S. Curry\, who is a registered nurse and graduate of the University of South Carolina. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gullah Roots. This film\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, explores South Carolina’s ties with West Africa\, educating viewers about Gullah heritage\, including spiritual\, musical and artistic traditions. A sequel to SCETV’s 1990 documentary Family Across the Sea\, this film was produced by Betsy Newman and Xavier Blake\, and directed\, written and edited by Newman. The film aims to raise awareness about the Gullah Geechee community and its ties to West Africa.
