SUMMARY:Museum Matinee
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of slaves from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. Its passing\, along with that of the grand cotton plantations\, ended a way of life. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 5th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. SUMMARY:Conway publisher to speak on novel about Civil War hero Robert Smalls
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture and book signing by local publisher\, Steve Robertson on Thursday\, February 6th\, on his new novel about Civil War hero Robert Smalls. \nIn the early morning hours of May 12\, 1862\, a young enslaved man astonished a nation\, torn by Civil War\, when he commandeered Charleston’s most powerful warship and sailed it past a formidable gauntlet of Rebel forts to freedom. \nAs the war played out\, his escape from deep within Southern territory set off a series of events that made Robert Smalls the most famous black man in the United States. \nThe exploits of Smalls before\, during and after his daring dash to freedom is the subject of a novel written by Steve Robertson in conjunction with African-American History Month\, Smalls: The South wanted his head. The North his heart. \n“The Smalls story fascinated me from the moment I first heard it\,” said Robertson\, a journalist by profession. “The more I learned about his life and times\, the more convinced I became that his story must be told.” \nAlthough several excellent histories of Robert Smalls have been written\, Smalls is among the first semi-fictional accounts of the man born into slavery\, but who helped change the course of the Civil War. \n“Interestingly\, Robert’s escape from slavery is only part of the amazing story\,” said Robertson. “After his escape\, the South put a bounty on his head. Undeterred\, Robert participated in numerous battles taking place around Charleston and Beaufort.” \nMore importantly\, the previously enslaved man influenced President Abraham Lincoln to allow black men to fight on behalf of the Union at a pivotal point during the Civil War.

SUMMARY:Rodger Stroup: Meet Me at the Rocket: A History of the South Carolina State Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Rodger Stroup on February 8th\, on his book Meet Me at the Rocket: A History of the South Carolina State Fair. \nIn the early 1700s South Carolinians were gathering to exchange information about crops and livestock\, and small rural fairs were held\, enhanced by horse racing\, raffles\, and other diversions to draw in the populace. The State Agricultural Society of South Carolina was founded in 1839 and held its first annual fair and stock show in November of the following year. In 1869 the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina was founded to revive the fair and has presented a fair in every year except 1918. The South Carolina State Fair has a long and storied history from those early days to its current “meet me at the rocket” days. Those initial fair goers would have been astonished to see the rocket\, a Jupiter intermediate-range ballistic missile\, greeting them as they arrived on the grounds. Join us as we explore South Carolina’s agriculture and industry\, its science and art and history through the State Fair. \nRodger E. Stroup is a graduate of Wofford College and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He has been the director/curator of the Historic Columbia Foundation\, deputy director of the South Carolina State Museum\, and director and state historic preservation officer of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. In 2009 he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto\, the highest civilian honor in the state of South Carolina. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Museum Matinee
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nEarly every weekday morning\, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island\, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat\, the Prince Washington\, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However\, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact\, they fought to keep it this way. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves\, to the environmentalists\, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 12th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. SUMMARY:Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays. \nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He would become president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades would reach far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays would fulfill. Interviewees include Andrew Young\, Hank Aaron\, Mays’ great niece Dr. Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp\, and Dr. Robert Franklin. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 19th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. SUMMARY:Matt McDonough: The Golden Age of Piracy
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Matt McDonough on Saturday\, February 22nd\, on the Golden Age of Piracy. \nNothing quite captures the American imagination like the Golden Age of Piracy. Seafaring rogues who swashed their buckles\, accumulated and squandered a fortune amidst the beautiful turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean. But how much of this depiction is true to history? Were they truly the romantic anti-heroes of yore? Vicious criminal sociopaths? Or something in between? Join Dr. Matthew McDonough as we separate fact from fiction regarding these tyrants of the seas. \nDr. Matthew McDonough earned his PhD in American history from Kansas State University in 2011 and has won several teaching awards over the last decade. His teaching and research specializations include military history\, the American frontier and the Golden Age of Piracy. At present he is a Senior Lecturer of history at Coastal Carolina University and had previously served as an adjunct for Kansas State University and as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point. When not teaching or lecturing\, Dr. McDonough can most often be found enjoying spicy food\, playing board games with his wife or visiting Amusement parks. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Eric Emerson: A History of the State Flag
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Eric Emerson on Saturday\, February 29th\, on the history of the South Carolina state flag. \nSouth Carolina has had a number of flags over the course of its history\, and two have been approved by the General Assembly. The second of these was created by A.S. Salley\, the first Secretary of the South Carolina History Commission (now known as the South Carolina Department of Archives & History)\, with help from Clemson College and a little-known friend in Charleston. In this lecture\, Dr. Emerson will recount the tale of a man whose claims to be the authority on South Carolina history led the General Assembly to task him with re-creating the state flag. His design would be the forerunner of today’s banner\, the nation’s second most popular state flag. \nDr. Emerson is the director of the South Carolina Department of Archives & History (SCDAH). He received his Bachelors of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte and his masters and doctorate in History from the University of Alabama. Prior to coming to SCDAH in 2009\, he served as the executive director of the Charleston Library Society and the South Carolina Historical Society. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
