SUMMARY:Pat Sprecher: Scrappy Quilts (Cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by local quilter Pat Sprecher on Friday\, March 20th at 1 pm on creating Scrappy Quilts. Join us to view different examples of scrappy quilts and learn about the many types of patterns that can be used! \nPat took a class several years ago on scrappy quilts by Augusta Cole and fell in love with her patterns. She has made several of her scrappy curved log cabins\, snappy scrappy stars and snappy square quilts. While Pat has kept a few for herself\, she mainly uses these patterns to use scraps for her charity sewing\, which she feels is a perfect way to not only use up scraps\, but provide for those in need. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the Museum Classroom\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Kathy Stuart: Whole Cloth Quilts (Cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by quilter Kathleen Stuart on March 24th on Wholecloth Quilts. When it comes to “traditional” quilts\, Kathy prefers to make wholecloth quilts using the traditional medallion style\, however\, she likes to use luxe fabrics such as silk dupioni or sateen and often incorporates machine embroidery. Kathy also likes to use fabric paints on her wholecloth quilts and Swarovski crystals. \nOriginally from Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Kathy now lives in North Carolina so that she can enjoy the warmer weather. She has been interested in every aspect of fiber since the age of four\, having tried almost every technique including knitting\, crochet\, needlepoint\, tatting\, macramé and quilting\, although she didn’t begin to quilt until 2001. \nKathy began to compete in quilt shows and found that her style of quilting didn’t fit into any of the categories….people just don’t do wholecloth anymore. Because of this her work was put into the “other” category\, which she realized that this is a good thing. It has allowed her to try new things and stretch the idea of what a wholecloth quilt can be adding more paint and beading\, while still maintaining the traditional aspects of this type of quilt. \nKathy has won many awards for her work including Best of Show for her machine quilting at Machine Quilters Showcase. Her work has been featured in magazines\, newspapers and video presentations\, one of which was a vidcast by B. McCaffery of the Houston Quilt Show. At the Asheville Quilt Show\, she was asked to do a short video for the series “Go Tell It At The Quilt Show” for the Quilt Alliance\, a group that documents\, preserves and shares the stories of quilters and their quilts. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the ‘one horse family farm’ from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! For much of the 20th century\, tobacco was the main cash crop for Horry County and the Pee Dee Region. During the late summer\, leaves would be gathered and taken to the barn to be strung and cured\, this process required participation from all family members\, down to young children\, whose job would have been to hand the tobacco leaves to a stringer. Join us on August 1st\, 4th\, and 5th as we show how tobacco would have been gathered and strung on the family farm. Demonstrations will take place from 9 AM-11 AM. \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway\, SC\, and is free and open to the public. For more information\, call the L.W. Paul Living History Farm at 843-915-5321 or email the Horry County Museum at hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. For a full list of programs\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.
