SUMMARY:South Carolinians in WWII: Liberation
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolinians in WWII: Liberation.  This episode follows our veterans past the Battle of the Bulge and through the Siegfried Line as they battle their way into Germany to discover the horror of concentration camps. Combining first-person accounts of the holocaust survivors and veterans\, a distinct picture is drawn of the inhumanity that the Nazi command structure forced upon those they deemed undesirable. The stories are graphic and heartbreaking but tell a vivid story of heroism and the will to survive when surrounded by the horrors of war. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, September 11th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. SUMMARY:Lesta Sue Hardee: Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author Lesta Sue Hardee\, on Saturday\, September 14th on her book\, Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach. \nSimeon B. Chapin was an entrepreneur and visionary who\, along with Franklin G. Burroughs\, helped create the foundation of what is Myrtle Beach today. B.B. Benfield built and opened the area’s first movie theater\, and Lawrence Boulier was a landscape artist and founder of the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild. Earl Husted brought the first amusement park rides to this area\, and Anthony James left after high school to make a name for himself as the first widely known actor from the Myrtle Beach area. Some of these names may be unfamiliar\, but each of these legendary locals\, in his or her own way\, has helped make Myrtle Beach the historical hometown and vacationers’ paradise that it is today. \nLesta Sue Hardee\, a Myrtle Beach native\, is active in preserving the history of Myrtle Beach through oral history interviews and the archiving of materials that she comes across at work and during her personal genealogy and local research. She loves Myrtle Beach and is always willing to share a story or two. Besides Legendary Locals\, she is the coauthor of Myrtle Beach Pavilion. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Christopher Boyle: Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author and historian Christopher Boyle on Saturday\, September 28th\, on his book Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River. \n“Mansfield Plantation was the ancestral home of the Man-Taylor-Lance-Parker family for over one hundred and fifty years. A hundred years after being sold out of the family’s possession\, John and Sallie Middleton Parker have returned the property to the family bloodline. The new owners have gone to extraordinary measures to restore\, preserve and share their family treasure. The estate has several concurrently running projects which are designed to preserve Mansfield for future generations to explore\, research and appreciate. As history fades\, and historical landmarks disappear\, Mansfield will remain as she has for nearly three centuries; an approachable yet elegant reminder of South Carolina’s plantation heritage.” \nChristopher C. Boyle is a full-time social studies teacher at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, and a part-time teaching associate at Coastal Carolina University in Conway. Upon graduation from Coastal Carolina University with his bachelor’s degree in history\, he further studied history at Winthrop University where he graduated in 1996 with his Master of Arts degree in American history. Boyle is the author of Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River and The Road to Secession in Antebellum Georgetown & Horry Districts. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
