DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Uncommon Courage: The D-Day Battle of Graignes. This documentary tells the remarkable story of the little known battle of Graignes described as the “Alamo of D-Day”. When the D-Day invasion of France began on June 6\, 1944\, approximately 180 American paratroopers were accidentally dropped far from their drop zone\, and landed outside the small village of Graignes in Normandy\, right in the path of a major German counterattack.  Assisted by French villagers\, the American paratroopers at Graignes made a courageous stand against a force of German S.S. troops that was ten time their size. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 3rd\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2026. DESCRIPTION:After the rise of the boll weevil made cotton crops unstable\, flue-cured tobacco became the main cash crop of Horry County. This presentation focuses on the impact of the auction system and the ways in which farmers and buyers attempted to push the prices in their favor. Join us on June 6th at 1 pm to learn more about the impact of flue-cured tobacco with Horry County Museum Curator Abigail Geedy. \nAbby was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Anthropology and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for 5 years before joining the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant in 2020. She then moved into the role of Curator in 2022. She has previously worked as an intern or volunteer at the York County Heritage Trust in York\, PA\, the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg\, PA and McKissick Museum in Columbia\, SC. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. The name\, Melvin Horace Purvis\, to many people today\, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name\, and over 260\,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis\, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name\, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day\, including John Dillinger\, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide\, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? David was one of the first African American slaves to sign many of his works\, which included jars and pitchers. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Jail\, No Bail\, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. In January of 1961\, black students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill\, SC walked into McCrory’s\, sat at the lunch counter\, and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. They were denied service and asked to leave. After refusing to leave\, the students were arrested for trespassing and processed. SUMMARY:Elizabeth Chew: Art & the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program in collaboration with Coastal Carolina University and the South Carolina 250th Commission on Saturday\, July 18th\, 2026 at 1 PM. This lecture will examine ways that artists depicted the American Revolution\, in South Carolina and elsewhere\, while it was happening and after independence was won. We will look at images of the war and its heroes that were available to newly minted Americans at the time as well as ways the war was remembered 50 and 75 years later. \nElizabeth Chew became CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society in January 2024\, leading a statewide organization that collects and shares the stories of all South Carolinians. A historian\, curator\, and educator\, she has worked at museums and historic sites for over 30 years \nPrior to arriving in Charleston\, she served as Executive Vice President and Chief Curator at James Madison’s Montpelier in Virginia. During her 8 ½ years there\, Dr. Chew led teams of curators\, historians\, and educators to research and interpret James Madison and his family\, his role in framing the U.S. Constitution\, and the community of enslaved people on the plantation. \nEarlier in her career\, she served as Curator at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville\, VA. During her thirteen-year tenure there\, she was responsible for ongoing research and interpretation initiatives that wove together the Monticello house\, its collections\, Jefferson and his family\, and the enslaved community. \nElizabeth received a BA from Yale University\, a master’s from the University of London\, and a PhD from UNC- Chapel Hill. \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:Eric Emerson: The History of the South Carolina’s State Flag
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Eric Emerson on Saturday\, July 25th at 1 PM\, on the history of the South Carolina state flag. \nThis year marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, but it also marks the origins of South Carolina’s state flag. Although our state has had a number of flags\, only two have been approved by the General Assembly. The second of these was created by A.S. Salley\, the first Secretary of the South Carolina History Commission (now known as the South Carolina Department of Archives & History)\, with help from Clemson College and a little-known friend in Charleston. In this lecture\, Dr. Emerson will recount the Revolutionary War origins of our flag and explain how Salley convinced the General Assembly to task him with re-creating the state’s first official flag. His design would be the forerunner of today’s banner\, the nation’s second most popular state flag. \nDr. Emerson is the sixth director of the South Carolina Department of Archives & History (SCDAH). He also serves as State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and State Archivist. He received his Bachelors of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte and his masters and doctorate in History from the University of Alabama. Prior to coming to SCDAH in 2009\, he served as the executive director of the Charleston Library Society and the South Carolina Historical Society. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Tobacco Heritage Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:See history come to life at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! The Farm will host its annual Tobacco Heritage Day on Saturday\, August 1st from 9 AM-Noon. For much of the 20th century\, tobacco was the main cash crop for Horry County and the Pee Dee Region and provided an income for many farm families in the area. During the late summer\, leaves were gathered and taken to the barn to be strung and cured. This process required participation from all family members\, down to young children\, whose job would be to hand the tobacco leaves to a stringer. Demonstrations will include gathering\, hand tying and stringing tobacco\, cooking on the wood burning stove\, and a variety of other farm activities. \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway\, SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call the L.W. SUMMARY:The Battles of Fort Watson & Fort Motte\, 1781
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Steven Smith on his new book The Battles of Fort Watson & Fort Motte\, 1781 on Saturday\, August 8th at 1:00 PM. In his book\, Smith relates the history of four critical weeks from April 12 until May 12\, 1781\, in which the tide of the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War turned in favor of the Americans. The book focuses on General Francis Marion’s and Colonel Henry Lee’s capture of two key British forts\, Fort Watson and Fort Motte\, coordinating with Nathanael Greene in retaking the South Carolina backcountry. These posts defended the supply line between Charleston and the British-occupied villages of Camden and Ninety Six. Once the two forts were lost\, the British had to abandon the backcountry and were confined to Charleston and ultimately abandoned the city in December 1782. \nSteven D. Smith\, is a Research Professor\, Emeritus at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina.  He is the former Director of the Institute\, and has over 40 years’ experience in historical archaeology\, largely focused on military sites of the American Revolution in the South.  He has conducted excavations associated with Francis Marion and American Revolutionary War battlefields including the siege of Fort Motte\, Parker’s Ferry\, Black Mingo\, Snow’s Island\, Camden\, the siege of Ninety Six\, and the battle of Williamson’s Plantation.  He is the author or co-author of six books\, including\, Partisans\, Guerillas\, and Irregulars:  Historical Archaeology of Asymmetric Warfare\, 2019\, University of Alabama Press\, and Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community\, United Writers Press\, 2021.  His latest book\, coauthored with Colonel Kevin Dougherty\, is entitled Leading Like the Swamp Fox: The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion\, and The Battles of Fort Watson and Fort Motte\, 1781.  \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The End of the Road Bluegrass Band on Saturday\, August 15th at 1:00 PM. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway\, South Carolina. Formed in 2001\, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches\, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne\, Carolina Blue\, and The Virginia Luthiers. Band members include Joe Hudson on guitar/vocals\, Ron Mew on mandolin/vocals\, Blake Marlowe on banjo/vocals\, and Stephanie Sullivan on fiddle. \nThe concert will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I\, Freddie Stowers\, and Alvin York. Stowers\, a native of South Carolina\, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action while leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991\, and became the first African American soldier to receive the award in World War I. This lecture will cover The Formation of Chickamauga Towns: A Study of Cherokee Gender\, Kinship\, and Resistance in the Revolutionary Era. \nJamie Myers is as historian of American Indians of the Southeastern United States. She received her B.A. in history from Truett0McConnell University\, her M.A. from the University of North Georgia and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She is currently an associate professor of History at the University of North Carolina\, Pembroke\, where she teaches courses on American Indian history\, the history of global Indigenous peoples and the colonial and early American history. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by acting Chief Cheryl Cail on the Waccamaw Indian People on Saturday\, August 29th at 1 PM. \nCheryl Cail is the Acting Chief of the Waccamaw Indian People and Chairperson of SC Idle No More; a SC Indian Affairs Commission committee which focuses on environmental and cultural preservation\, and indigenous sovereignty. She is a small business owner\, the mother of three sons and grandmother of seven. She is currently attending Coastal Carolina University pursuing a B.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Environmental and Cultural Sustainability of Indigenous Lands. \nCheryl has been a guest speaker\, presenter and panelist at college lecture series and community events\, as well as a consultant and contributor for academic publications and reports. She is a co-founder of the Indigenize SC Education Task Force\, serves as a member of the board of the Waccamaw Community Foundation\, on the leadership team for the National PFAS Contamination Coalition\, and is a sitting member of the Council of Chiefs of the Tribal Alliance of South Carolina Nations. \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C.
