SUMMARY:Rub-a-Dub-Dub: Does Your Quilt Belong in the Tub?
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us on Saturday\, March 22nd at 1 PM as Certified Quilt Appraiser Brenda Grampsas answers questions about the care and storage of quilts. Grampsas will present methods of treating stains and laundering quilts that have worked for her and her clients for years. Questions are welcome! \nBrenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser\, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. The name\, Melvin Horace Purvis\, to many people today\, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name\, and over 260\,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis\, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name\, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day\, including John Dillinger\, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide\, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Jail\, No Bail\, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. In January of 1961\, black students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill\, SC walked into McCrory’s\, sat at the lunch counter\, and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. They were denied service and asked to leave. After refusing to leave\, the students were arrested for trespassing and processed. This 30 minute program pays tribute to the ‘Friendship Nine’ sit-in protest that inspired the Jail\, No Bail Movement\, a strategy which turned the tables on the establishment and reinvigorated the National Civil Rights Movement. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, April 2nd\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. She loves portraying Eliza Lucas Pinckney and following in Eliza’s many “schemes.” Her most recent is the latest in a series of ‘Tea With Eliza Lucas Pinckney’ at Hampton Plantation. Huntsinger lives in Georgetown with her husband Lee. Her walking tour\, Ghosts of Georgetown Lantern Tours\, is in Georgetown’s waterfront Historic District. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I\, Freddie Stowers\, and Alvin York. Stowers\, a native of South Carolina\, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action while leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991\, and became the first African-American soldier to receive the award in World War I. SUMMARY:Sawgrass to Perform Bluegrass Concert at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by Sawgrass on Saturday\, May 10th\, at 1:00 PM. A tribute to local luthier\, the late Jennings Chestnut will also take place before the performance. \nSawgrass was formed in 1998 by founding member Jody Harrison\, whose vision and passion shaped the band’s distinctive sound. The current lineup features Rich Viso\, affectionately known as “Dr. Banjo\,” who has been with the band for 15 years\, and the multi-talented Corey Merchant\, who plays bass and serves as the band’s sound and audio engineer. \nIn 2024\, the band welcomed Corey Anderson\, whose exceptional vocals bring a dynamic new element to the group. Anderson’s voice is a true hidden gem\, adding rich depth and emotion to Sawgrass’s performances. Also joining the band is Jenni Lyn Gardner\, a Grammy-nominated musician with a distinguished international touring career and a deep history of music diplomacy. Jenni Lyn brings a wealth of experience\, passion\, and authenticity to Sawgrass. \nOver the years\, Sawgrass has become a fixture in the bluegrass community. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. This film tells the story of three American pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force during World War I. The film chronicles the exploits of John Grider\, Elliott White Springs\, and Larry Callahan\, all known as the “Three Musketeers”. War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator was originally published after World War I and became a bestseller. It was assumed that the diary was written and kept by Grider\, the only member of the trio to be killed in action. However\, it was later discovered in 1959 that Springs\, who later became president of Spring Cotton Mills\, Inc. and founder of Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, wrote and published the work in memory of his friend and other pilots who had died in the war. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, May 14th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program on the Vietnam War by Coastal Carolina University History Professor John Navin on Saturday\, May 17th\, at 1:00 PM. Dr. Navin will discuss circumstances and events that led to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. He will describe political conditions\, military strategies and major combat operations\, the experience of soldiers and civilians\, the role of the media\, the rise of a powerful anti-war movement\, the politics of withdrawal\, and the war’s legacy. Veterans are especially invited to participate and to contribute to the discussion. \nJohn J. Navin is a professor of history at Coastal Carolina University\, where he teaches American history. He holds a master’s degree in American studies from Boston College and a Ph.D. in history from Brandeis University. The event is sponsored by Goldfinch Funeral Home\, the Horry County Museum\, HTC\, and the United Bank Center for Military & Veteran Studies at Coastal Carolina University.\n“Veterans Day honors our military veterans\, Armed Forces Day honors active-duty military\, and Memorial Day honors those Americans in uniform who sacrificed their lives for our country\,” said Walter Hill\, who is director of the Horry County Museum. “The annual Memorial Day Tribute is an event that enables all of us to take a moment and gratefully reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”\nThe 2025 Memorial Day Tribute at McCown Auditorium is designed to honor Americans in uniform of all ages who sacrificed their lives in the service of their country\, and will include a moment of silence\, presentation of the national colors by a color guard\, live patriotic music\, and recognition of veterans by service branch and era. It also includes the screening of a new and locally produced documentary film: The Golden Boys: Heroism & Heartbreak in World War II America\, which chronicles the story of the Norton twins of Horry County\, who sacrificed their lives as bomber pilots in Europe during World War II.\n“The story of “Hoagie’ and ‘Whack’ – the Norton twins — is remarkable and very inspiring\,” said Rod Gragg\, who is the film’s producer. “It is a fitting reminder of the sacrifices made by American military personnel for our country\, and underscores the truth of the honored saying – ‘Freedom is not free.’”\n“We invite the general public to join veterans and active-duty military at the 2025 Memorial Day Tribute\,” said Meghan Hayden\, the president of Goldfinch Funeral Home. “It’s a meaningful way for us to remember those in uniform who gave all on our behalf\, and it gives us an appropriate opportunity to express our gratitude to our veterans and active-duty military for their service.”\nSeating at the 2025 Memorial Day Tribute will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Back to the Battlefield: Remembering D-Day. This locally produced film follows the late Mike Fitch of Conway\, an 89 year-old D-Day veteran\, as he returned to Omaha Beach in France for the first time since landing as an American combat soldier on June 6\, 1944. Attached to the 116th Regimental Combat Team on D-Day\, Fitch landed in the second wave of American troops on Charlie Sector\, which was one of “Bloody Omaha’s” deadliest landing sites. \nShot on location in France\, Back to the Battlefield leads the viewer through the beaches\, battlefields\, hedgerows and villages of modern Normandy. Enhanced by historic newsreel footage\, the one-hour documentary chronicles the dramatic story of D-Day as retold on-the-scene by Fitch\, a World War II combat veteran whose vivid memories give viewers a unique you-are-there exposure to the world-changing events of D-Day. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, May 28th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025.
