SUMMARY:Steve Berkowitz: Local Flora & Fauna
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture on February 15th\, on local plants and wildlife. Join us as retired CCU professor Stephen Berkowitz shares images and videos of local wildlife including birds\, mammals\, reptiles\, insects and flowers that he has collected from natural areas throughout Horry County. \nSteve Berkowitz completed his graduate training and thesis work was at Texas A&M University\, in biological oceanography\, specializing in zooplankton and Antarctic krill. He was hired as the Assistant Director of the Center of Marine and Wetland Studies at CCU in 1991. After some years\, he transitioned to a full-time position as Lab Coordinator and Senior Instructor from which he retired in 2011. Berkowitz has participated in dozens of research expeditions in Antarctica\, the Gulf of Mexico and the Western Atlantic Ocean. He also spent five years as an environmental consultant\, based out of Virginia and Florida. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays. \nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He would become president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades would reach far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays would fulfill. Interviewees include Andrew Young\, Hank Aaron\, Mays’ great niece Dr. Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp\, and Dr. Robert Franklin. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 19th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Matt McDonough on Saturday\, February 22nd\, on the Golden Age of Piracy. \nNothing quite captures the American imagination like the Golden Age of Piracy. Seafaring rogues who swashed their buckles\, accumulated and squandered a fortune amidst the beautiful turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean. But how much of this depiction is true to history? Were they truly the romantic anti-heroes of yore? Vicious criminal sociopaths? Or something in between? Join Dr. Matthew McDonough as we separate fact from fiction regarding these tyrants of the seas. \nDr. Matthew McDonough earned his PhD in American history from Kansas State University in 2011 and has won several teaching awards over the last decade. His teaching and research specializations include military history\, the American frontier and the Golden Age of Piracy. At present he is a Senior Lecturer of history at Coastal Carolina University and had previously served as an adjunct for Kansas State University and as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point. SUMMARY:Eric Emerson: A History of the State Flag
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Eric Emerson on Saturday\, February 29th\, on the history of the South Carolina state flag. \nSouth Carolina has had a number of flags over the course of its history\, and two have been approved by the General Assembly. The second of these was created by A.S. Salley\, the first Secretary of the South Carolina History Commission (now known as the South Carolina Department of Archives & History)\, with help from Clemson College and a little-known friend in Charleston. In this lecture\, Dr. Emerson will recount the tale of a man whose claims to be the authority on South Carolina history led the General Assembly to task him with re-creating the state flag. His design would be the forerunner of today’s banner\, the nation’s second most popular state flag. \nDr. Emerson is the director of the South Carolina Department of Archives & History (SCDAH). He received his Bachelors of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte and his masters and doctorate in History from the University of Alabama. Prior to coming to SCDAH in 2009\, he served as the executive director of the Charleston Library Society and the South Carolina Historical Society. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:It’s a new decade and a new makeover for the 26th annual Horry County Museum Quilt Gala to be held this year at the Horry County Museum and the LW Paul Living History Farm March 3rd through the 27th. \nThe public is invited to vote for their favorite quilts on display at the Museum from March 3rd through the 20th. An awards ceremony for the winning quilts will be held in the Museum’s auditorium on March 21st. In addition to the quilts on display\, there will be a variety of programming at the Museum and Farm throughout the month of March. Museum programs include a presentation on Gullah Rag Quilting by the Gullah Lady\, Sharon Cooper-Murray on March 6th\, a spinning demonstration on March 12th\, a Quilts of Valor presentation on March 14th\, and a talk on Feedsack Quilts on March 17th. Scheduled programs at the Farm include an indigo dyeing workshop on March 10th\, and a discussion on antique quilts on March 18th. SUMMARY:Joanne Shropshire-Second Helping Quilts
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by local quilter Joanne Shropshire on Tuesday\, March 3rd at 1 pm. Join us to learn how to create ‘second helping quilts’. Rather than wasting scraps\, Joanne will show how she uses her leftover materials from one project to create an entirely new quilt. \nJoanne was given a needle and thread at an early age to make her own Barbie clothes. At the age of nine\, she learned to use her sewing machine and made her first dress\, and so began her love of all things fabric! She received a degree in Fashion Technology and started working as a pattern designer for a women’s sportswear company. After a few years\, she started her own business doing custom clothing and alterations. \nJoanne is an active member of the Coastal Carolina Quilters\, the Cobblestone Quilt Guild and AQS. DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on March 5th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM to learn about traditional foods on the family farm. Fried shad were a common dish for many farm families during cold winter months. Families would also can the fish to be used later on for making patties or stew. Join us for this month’s cooking demonstration to see shad being canned using a pressure canning pot. \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. SUMMARY:Jerre Reese: Mini Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the L.W. Paul Living History Farm will host two ‘Mini Trunk Shows’ by local quilter Jerre Reese. Join us to view just a few of her miniature quilts and learn how she makes them. Jerre’s talk will be held at the Horry County Museum (805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC) on Thursday\, March 5th at 1 pm and at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm\, (2279 Harris Short Cut Road\, Conway\, SC) Thursday\, March 19th at 1 pm. \nFor those with questions about an antique quilt in their personal collection\, Jerre will be available after each program\, starting at 2:30 pm\, to give an approximate date and pattern name of the quilt\, and offer tips on caring for and storing\, or displaying\, it. \nJerre Reese grew up in Detroit\, MI and began sewing at around ten years old. She began quilting about 42 years ago and has been doing it ever since. At first she did everything by hand but\, as machine work became more acceptable\, she switched to machine work.  Also\, because she wanted to finish more than two quilts per year! \nShe has taken classes with many big-name quilt teachers over the years and has tried just about every quilting technique there is. Her quilts have won ribbons in numerous shows and three have been published in various publications. She also had five quilts juried into the prestigious American Quilter’s Society shows. She loves quilting and enjoys sharing the knowledge she’s picked up along the way with others. \nBoth programs are free to the public. SUMMARY:Sharon Cooper-Murray: Gullah Rag Quilting
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and South Carolina Humanities present a program by “The Gullah Lady”\, Sharon Cooper-Murray\, on Friday\, March 6th\, on the history of rag quilting in the Gullah community. \nThis entertaining and educational program explores the history of rag quilting\, a tradition dating to the antebellum period\, when feed and grain sacks were combined with rag strips to make unique quilts. Traditionally passed from generation to generation\, Cooper-Murray was taught the process by Gullah women from Wadmalaw and Johns Island. She has since set out on a mission to preserve this disappearing art form. \nSharon Cooper-Murray is a native of South Carolina raised in Florence County. After attending college in Tennessee\, she returned to South Carolina and has resided Charleston County\, South Carolina. When she arrived on Wadmalaw Island\, SC\, it was the first time she heard the Gullah language\, and she was fascinated by the tone and rhythm of this Creole language. That was the beginning of what has become her life-long passion: the Gullah culture\, their stories\, folk music\, crafts\, food ways\, religious folkways … their way of life. She has traveled throughout the east coast of the United States as an advocate of the preservation\, conservation and development of the culture through workshops\, lectures\, storytelling\, special events and artist in residency programs. \nThe program\, sponsored by South Carolina Humanities\, will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on March 7th from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM for Farm Harvest Day to participate in the picking\, gathering\, and preparing of crops on the farm. \nGreen onions are one of the first vegetables that can be harvested in Horry County. Visitors are invited to join staff in the farm garden to see the onions growing and learn about how the growth at the top of the plant would be used as soon as it was available. \nThe L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. DESCRIPTION:The L.W. Paul Living History Farm will host a free hands-on workshop on indigo dyeing on Tuesday\, March 10th at 10 AM. Join Kimberly Washburn\, Curator of Education at the Florence County Museum\, to explore Indigofera Suffruticosa\, the variety of indigo grown in colonial South Carolina. \nArt\, Science and History meet in this hands-on exploration of natural indigo. Participants will explore the importance of the indigo plant to South Carolina’s early agricultural economy\, learn the science behind this unique dye plant\, and learn pattern-making techniques to create an original work of textile art using indigo dye. Each participant will design and dye one cotton flour sack towel. \nSpace is limited\, pre-registration is encouraged. SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. In 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 11th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. SUMMARY:Sandy Jacobs: Redwork Revisited
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by local quilter Sandy Jacobs on Wednesday\, March 11th on redwork in quilting. Redwork is a form of American embroidery\, also called art needlework that developed in the 19th century and was particularly popular between 1855 and 1925. Redwork designs are composed of simple stitches and were mainly used to decorate household objects in the 19th and 20th centuries\, especially quilts. \nSandy Jacobs’ first quilt was a huge t-shirt quilt made from her daughter’s sorority shirts. She made a few more on her own before she decided to begin taking classes. Jacobs began with traditional piecing and enjoys the challenge of making everything fit properly. She has been teaching beginning quilting and other classes for the last few years at local quilt shops and also for guilds. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.
