SUMMARY:Tina Harr-Wrapped up in Quilting
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free quilt turning featuring wall hangings and large quilts by local quilter Tina Harr. Tina’s talk will be held at the Horry County Museum (805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC) on Tuesday\, March 9th at 1 PM. \nA native of the Hudson Valley in New York\, Tina Harr is proud to call Conway her home for over 10 years. Her first sewing experience was with her grandmother making 9 patch blocks the old fashioned way: marking the fabric with a pen and square cut from a cereal box and doing all the cutting with scissors. The quilts they made were tied and a bedsheet was the backing material. \nIn 2000\, Tina joined a quilt group in NY and learned about all the innovations that had happened since the early ’70’s\, rotary cutters\, thick plastic templates……etc.  Being part of the Serendipity Stitchers was something she missed when she first moved to Conway\, and when her friend Patsy Ray told her about the Conway Quilters she joined them in their second year. The things Tina loves most about the group are their charitable endeavors and being part of the Quilts of Valor program. \nThis program is free to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. To view a full list of programs\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Kathleen Stuart: Wholecloth Quilts
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by quilter Kathleen Stuart on March 10th on Wholecloth Quilts. When it comes to “traditional” quilts\, Kathy prefers to make wholecloth quilts using the traditional medallion style\, however\, she likes to use luxe fabrics such as silk dupioni or sateen and often incorporates machine embroidery. Kathy also likes to use fabric paints on her wholecloth quilts and Swarovski crystals. \nOriginally from Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Kathy now lives in North Carolina so that she can enjoy the warmer weather. She has been interested in every aspect of fiber since the age of four\, having tried almost every technique including knitting\, crochet\, needlepoint\, tatting\, macramé and quilting\, although she didn’t begin to quilt until 2001. \nKathy began to compete in quilt shows and found that her style of quilting didn’t fit into any of the categories….people just don’t do wholecloth anymore. Because of this her work was put into the “other” category\, which she realized was a good thing. It has allowed her to try new things and stretch the idea of what a wholecloth quilt can be by adding more paint and beading\, while still maintaining the traditional aspects of this type of quilt. \nKathy has won many awards for her work including Best of Show for her machine quilting at Machine Quilters Showcase. Her work has been featured in magazines\, newspapers and video presentations\, one of which was a vidcast by B. McCaffery of the Houston Quilt Show. At the Asheville Quilt Show\, she was asked to do a short video for the series “Go Tell It At The Quilt Show” for the Quilt Alliance\, a group that documents\, preserves and shares the stories of quilters and their quilts. \nThe program will begin at 10:00 am at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Featured Quilter-Deanna Holter
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, March 17th at 11 AM as we continue our celebration of textiles with local quilter Deanna Holter. Deanna will share her experience quilting and show off pieces that she has made. \nDeanna Holter started her quilting career around 1982 with Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day. In that program\, quilters didn’t use long arm quilts\, but instead sewed an ‘x’ from corner to corner. She has since altered her original piece and quilts on her long arm machine. After her first piece\, Deanna didn’t make any more quilts until moving to South Carolina in 2005. She found a cute pattern and went to town making quilts for each of her sister in laws. Those quilts got her started on a quilting journey in which she connected with the Grand Strand Quilters. There she met Joan Wobbleton and began volunteering to make Quilts of Valor quilts. Wanting to be a part of a more close knit guild\, Deanna joined the Conway Quilt Guild. Deanna feels very grateful to be part of a group of who she calls wonderful and caring ladies that have also been involved in many ceremonies to present quilts to veterans in the Conway area. \nThe program will begin at 11 AM at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Jerre Reese: Quilts with a Sense of Humor
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a program on Quilts with a Sense of Humor by local quilter Jerre Reese. From holidays to animals\, join us for a light-hearted trunk show of amusing quilts made by Jerre. Jerre’s talk will be held at the Horry County Museum (805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC) on Thursday\, March 18th at 1 pm. \nJerre Reese grew up in Detroit\, MI and began sewing at around ten years old. She began quilting about 42 years ago and has been doing it ever since. At first she did everything by hand but\, as machine work became more acceptable\, she switched to machine work.  Also\, because she wanted to finish more than two quilts per year! \nShe has taken classes with many big-name quilt teachers over the years and has tried just about every quilting technique there is. Her quilts have won ribbons in numerous shows and three have been published in various publications. She also had five quilts juried into the prestigious American Quilter’s Society shows. Reese loves quilting and enjoys sharing the knowledge she’s picked up along the way with others. \nThis program is free to the public. SUMMARY:Mini Trunk Show by Jerre Reese
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a ‘Mini Trunk Show’ by local quilter Jerre Reese. Join us to view just a few of her miniature quilts and learn how she makes them. Jerre’s talk will be held at the Horry County Museum (805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC) on Thursday\, March 25th at 1 pm. SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nEarly every weekday morning\, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island\, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat\, the Prince Washington\, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However\, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact\, they fought to keep it this way. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves\, to the environmentalists\, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 31st\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021.
