SUMMARY:Farm Animal Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on September 28th from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM to learn about the different animals on the farm and their various roles. In this program\, Wayne will demonstrate harnessing a mule. \nThe public is invited to help feed the animals from 9:00-9:30. Visitors can select an ear of corn\, shell it\, and use it to feed the chickens. This month farm staff will discuss the milk cow and display the different tools that would be used in the milking process. \nThe L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. SUMMARY:Christopher Boyle: Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author and historian Christopher Boyle on Saturday\, September 28th\, on his book Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River. \n“Mansfield Plantation was the ancestral home of the Man-Taylor-Lance-Parker family for over one hundred and fifty years. A hundred years after being sold out of the family’s possession\, John and Sallie Middleton Parker have returned the property to the family bloodline. The new owners have gone to extraordinary measures to restore\, preserve and share their family treasure. The estate has several concurrently running projects which are designed to preserve Mansfield for future generations to explore\, research and appreciate. As history fades\, and historical landmarks disappear\, Mansfield will remain as she has for nearly three centuries; an approachable yet elegant reminder of South Carolina’s plantation heritage.” \nChristopher C. Boyle is a full-time social studies teacher at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, and a part-time teaching associate at Coastal Carolina University in Conway. Upon graduation from Coastal Carolina University with his bachelor’s degree in history\, he further studied history at Winthrop University where he graduated in 1996 with his Master of Arts degree in American history. Boyle is the author of Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River and The Road to Secession in Antebellum Georgetown & Horry Districts. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. SUMMARY:Morris Brothers Traditional Bluegrass Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a free traditional bluegrass concert by The Morris Brothers on Saturday\, October 12th\, at 1:00 PM. The Morris Brothers have been playing music together for 44 years. Originally from West Virginia\, they now reside in the Aynor/Cool Springs area of South Carolina. The brothers started playing bluegrass when they were young boys growing up in the hollows of West Virginia. They enjoy playing bluegrass music and bluegrass gospel and play regularly in Horry County. Band members include Mike Morris of Aynor\, SC on vocals and banjo\, Matt Morris from Cool Springs\, SC on vocals and guitar\, William Hardee from Loris\, SC on vocals and fiddle\, Doug Leaman on mandolin\, and Tammy Holt of Conway\, SC on the bass. SUMMARY:Joe Long: Privateering Along the SC Coast
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Joe Long on Privateers of the South Carolina Coast on October 19th at 1:00 PM. \nAmerican privateering history is often associated with New England\, but Charleston was an important center of privateering and had some unique aspects to its swashbuckling story. Privateering could be a profitable venture for a bold captain. It also constituted an important strategy for our young Republic. Join us as Joe Long discusses Charleston-based privateers in the American Revolution\, in the War of 1812\, and in-between. Long will also examine the Charleston-based privateers in their strategic context as well as relating anecdotes from their adventures and misadventures. \nJoe Long is the Curator of Education for the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum\, where he has worked since 2002.  He holds an MA in History from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville\, Georgia\, and has been published in Civil War Historian magazine\, the Journal of the South Carolina Historical Society\, and elsewhere; he has also appeared on the television shows “History Detectives”\, “Carolina Stories” and the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum”.  Joe has written or co-written several of the Confederate Relic Room’s exhibits\, including “Through Fiery Trials: Religion in Civil War South Carolina”\, and “Paths of Destruction: Sherman’s Final Campaign”. He is currently working on a biography of General Maxcey Gregg.  Joe lives with his wife and small horde of children in Cayce\, SC; his oldest son is a rising junior at The Citadel. \nThe program will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a program by Elizabeth Robertson Huntsinger on Saturday\, October 26th\, on local ghost stories and superstitions. \nCelebrate Halloween with local author and storyteller Elizabeth Robertson Huntsinger as she weaves together superstitions and tales from Lucas Bay to Georgetown and the Lowcountry. Hear about the Revolutionary British soldier who died on the stairs in Georgetown\, and another British soldier who lost his head in Wedgefield and still searches for it today. Learn the antebellum stories of the Young Plantation on the north shore of Winyah Bay\, the Grey Man of Pawleys Island\, the Witch of Pawleys and Dr. Tucker of Litchfield and hear Lowcountry superstitions\, including one that relates to playing the fiddle. \nElizabeth Robertson Huntsinger\, author of Ghosts of Georgetown\, More Ghosts of Georgetown and Georgetown Mysteries and Legends\, is a storyteller\, historic reenactor and living historian. Her recent portrayals include 18th-century Harriott Pinkney Horry in Tea with Harriott Horry at Hampton Plantation and 19th-century Margaret Hamilton Seabrook Rutledge in Presenting My Colonel and His Lady at McClellanville. She has been Lady Elizabeth\, PIRATING with the Charlestown Few\, a pirate crew\, at the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show. \nElizabeth is active in martial arts\, fiddling\, kayaking and sewing historic clothing. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor display and presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for 19 local veterans will be on display at the Museum October 8th through the 25th. A presentation of the quilts to veterans will take place October 26th in the Museum’s auditorium at 1:00 pm at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. After six years\, the foundation decided to award a quilt to any veteran who served during wartime era\, from WWII to present. Join us on November 2nd from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM for Farm Harvest Day to learn participate in the picking\, gathering and preparing of seasonal crops at the Farm. \nMost farms in Horry County grew a patch of sugar cane that would be ready to harvest in early November. After the cane was harvested\, it was taken to the community cane mill and eventually cooked down to make syrup. This provided a sweet addition to food without much cost involved other than the farmer’s labor. At this month’s demonstration\, visitors will be able to learn about how sugar cane is harvested and have a chance to chew a piece of fresh cut cane. \nThe L. W. DESCRIPTION:The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is celebrating its 10th anniversary with this year’s annual Syrup Day! Join us to experience life on the family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 with this popular seasonal event. A large part of farm life involved old-fashioned syrup making. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community.  Relive that celebration on November 16th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm as staff and volunteers will be making syrup. Other traditional demonstrations will take place throughout the day including grinding corn into grits and meal\, blacksmithing\, cooking on a wood stove\, butter making\, traditional children’s games and more. \nThe L.
