SUMMARY:2026 Memorial Day Tribute Set for May 25 at McCown Auditorium in Conway
DESCRIPTION:2026 Memorial Day Tribute Set for May 25 at McCown Auditorium in Conway. \n  \nCONWAY\, S.C. – Veterans of the American Armed Forces\, active-duty military\, and the general public are invited to the 2026 Memorial Day Tribute at 2 p.m. on Monday\, May 25th in McCown Auditorium at the Horry County Museum in Conway.  The event is sponsored by the Horry County Museum\, Goldfinch Funeral Home\, HTC\, and the United Bank Center for Military & Veteran Studies at Coastal Carolina University. \n“Memorial Day is a unique and important observance that honors those Americans in uniform who sacrificed their lives for our country\,” said Horry County Museum Director Walter Hill\, “and the annual Memorial Day Tribute will hopefully enable us to do that in a very special way.” \nThe 2026 Memorial Day Tribute at McCown Auditorium is designed to honor Americans in uniform of all ages who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country\, and will include a moment of silence\, presentation of the national colors by a color guard\, live patriotic music\, and recognition of veterans of the American Armed Forces by service branch and era.  It also includes the screening of a locally produced historical documentary: Death Drop: The 82nd Airborne and D-Day\, which chronicles the actions of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944\, and airborne operations related to the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II. \n“It’s an extraordinary story of courage and heroism\,” said author and historian Rod Gragg\, who is the producer of the documentary. “The airborne troops were the point of the spear on D-day\, which was the largest amphibious operation of World War II and greatly determined the outcome of the war in Europe. The 82nd Airborne and two other airborne divisions were dropped behind enemy lines by parachute and glider with the potentially deadly task of capturing crucial roads\, causeways and bridges to prepare for the main Allied landing force\, which stormed the beaches of Normandy.  What the Airborne troops achieved on D-Day was astounding\, but it came at great cost.” \nMcCown Auditorium and the Horry County Museum are located at 805 Main Street in Conway. “This special event is a very meaningful way for us to remember those in uniform who gave all on our behalf\,” said Meghan Hayden\, the president of Goldfinch Funeral Home\, “and it also provides us with an opportunity to express our gratitude to our local veterans and active-duty military for their service.” \nAdmission to the 2026 Memorial Day Tribute is free.

SUMMARY:G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. The name\, Melvin Horace Purvis\, to many people today\, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name\, and over 260\,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis\, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name\, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day\, including John Dillinger\, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide\, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? Or was there something more sinister behind it? \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 10th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2026. SUMMARY:Eric Emerson: The History of the South Carolina’s State Flag
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Eric Emerson on Saturday\, July 25th at 1 PM\, on the history of the South Carolina state flag. \nThis year marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, but it also marks the origins of South Carolina’s state flag. Although our state has had a number of flags\, only two have been approved by the General Assembly. The second of these was created by A.S. Salley\, the first Secretary of the South Carolina History Commission (now known as the South Carolina Department of Archives & History)\, with help from Clemson College and a little-known friend in Charleston. In this lecture\, Dr. Emerson will recount the Revolutionary War origins of our flag and explain how Salley convinced the General Assembly to task him with re-creating the state’s first official flag. His design would be the forerunner of today’s banner\, the nation’s second most popular state flag. \nDr. Emerson is the sixth director of the South Carolina Department of Archives & History (SCDAH). He also serves as State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and State Archivist. He received his Bachelors of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte and his masters and doctorate in History from the University of Alabama. Prior to coming to SCDAH in 2009\, he served as the executive director of the Charleston Library Society and the South Carolina Historical Society. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov.
