SUMMARY:Museum Matinee: Mister Hawg-A Hash Opera
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Mister Hawg: A Hash Opera. After recovering from a stroke that appeared to have ended his career\, Stan Woodward recovered to complete the editing of Mister Hawg-a film that had been shot in 2003 but had never been edited. He retrieved footage from his archive before suffering the stroke in 2017. By 2018\, the editing was complete. The film tells the story of two brothers who cook and sell their famous BBQ\, sausage and hash at their facility deep in the woods of Fairfield County\, SC once a month and on the Fourth of July. Customers come regularly from as far away as Alabama to buy the hash and BBQ. In viewing the footage\, Stan decided to introduce a score from an opera to underscore the artistry of these two brothers. This unique story of two men with full-time jobs who love to come together once a month to keep their customers happy and cook BBQ and hash is a fitting finish to Woodward’s long career of capturing the untold story of Southern foodways and the folks who cook it. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, December 22nd at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: The Maritime Archaeological Legacy in the Pee Dee Region: Shipwrecks\, Logging\, and other Sites
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated presentation focuses on the maritime archaeological legacy related to shipping\, logging\, naval warfare and other activities in this region of the state. Archaeological sites include shipwrecks\, namely the Brown’s Ferry Vessel\, CSS Pee Dee\, and USS Harvest Moon\, remnants of the logging industry\, and other diverse sites\, structures\, and objects that reflect the unique maritime heritage of the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. \nJames Spirek\, the State Underwater Archaeologist for South Carolina\, works at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina\, Columbia.  Employed there since 1996 and holding his current position since 2012\, Jim’s responsibilities include managing and studying the maritime archaeological legacy residing in the lakes\, rivers\, and coastal waters of South Carolina.  Jim has participated in numerous projects documenting a diverse range of sunken prehistoric and historic watercraft\, Colonial and Native American sites\, Civil War warships and blockade runners\, and other underwater archaeological remains in state waters.  He is co-editor of Submerged Cultural Resource Management: Preserving and Interpreting Our Sunken Maritime Heritage\, and a co-contributor to Archaeology in South Carolina: Exploring the Hidden Heritage of the Palmetto State\, Florida’s Lost Galleon: The Emanuel Point Shipwreck\, and Guns of the Pee Dee: The Cannon Recovery.  Jim received his B.A. in History from George Mason University in 1987 and his M.A. in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University in 1993. \nThe program will be held on December 4th at 1 PM in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:A large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane would be gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice could be squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 20th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on November 6th on a new\, rare Early Paleocene vertebrate fossil locality in the Pee Dee Region.  Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology (with Honors and Distinction) from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy for 7 and ½ years\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught middle and high school science for 29 years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Center for Science Education\, the South Carolina Science Council\, and the South Carolina Education Association (Retired). DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program on October 23rd by local author Sherman Carmichael on eerie stories from South Carolina’s past. \nSherman Carmichael has been interested in ghosts\, UFO’s and other strange things since an early age. Many of the stories he wrote throughout his school years were on the strange and unknown. At the age of 16 he subscribed to Fate Magazine and that led him to start investigating the paranormal. Carmichael has visited many sites with a haunted history. In his early years he wrote many stories on South Carolina ghosts for several newspapers. With hundreds of folders of research Carmichael decided to write a book. In March 2011 Forgotten Tales of South Carolina was published by The History Press in Charleston\, S.C. Other books by Carmichael include Legends & Lore of South Carolina\, Mysterious Tales of Western North Carolina\, Mysterious Georgia\, Mysterious South Carolina\, and Eerie South Carolina \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C.
