DESCRIPTION:CONWAY\, S.C. – Area military veterans of the Vietnam War will be recognized at a special event entitled “Valor in Vietnam” at 1 p.m. on Tuesday\, May 31st – the day after Memorial Day – at the McCown Auditorium\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.  The event is sponsored by the Horry County Museum and the United Bank Center for Military & Veteran Studies at Coastal Carolina University\, and is free to the public. \n“Valor in Vietnam” will include recognition of American Vietnam veterans in attendance and a large-screen presentation of the new documentary film Soldier Stories: Valor in Vietnam.  The film chronicles the common experiences of Americans in uniform during the Vietnam War through historic combat footage\, period photography\, and personal commentary by local Vietnam veterans and others.    \n“We invite all local Vietnam veterans and those who are visiting our region to attend the free program as guests of honor\,” said Walter Hill\, who is the director of the Horry County Museum. “And we also welcome their families and friends — and members of the general public – to participate as a way of showing appreciation for all of our veterans. We hope that this event will be a meaningful contribution to our area’s observance of Memorial Day.” \nThe May 31st event is associated with the official United States 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemoration\, which is sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs through 2025 to honor American veterans of the Vietnam War and their families. \n-0- \nPHOTO CAPTION \nA wounded American marine receives treatment at the 1968 Battle of Hue. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV documentary\, Charlie’s Place. This 30 minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club. DESCRIPTION:“The Morris Brothers & Dixie Station to perform traditional bluegrass concert at the Horry County Museum” \nThe Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a free traditional bluegrass concert by The Morris Brothers on June 4th at 1:00 PM. \nThe Morris Brothers have been playing music together for 49 years. Originally from West Virginia\, they now reside in the Aynor/Cool Springs area of South Carolina. The brothers started playing bluegrass when they were young boys growing up in the hollows of West Virginia. They enjoy playing bluegrass music and bluegrass gospel and play regularly in Horry County. SUMMARY:Grahame Long-A Really Old Door
DESCRIPTION:“A Really Old Door…” Rediscovering the Nathaniel Russell House’s Kitchen House \nThe Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Grahame Long on June 11th\, on recent discoveries at the Nathaniel Russell House in Charleston\, SC. \nConstructed circa 1808\, a rear outbuilding of the Nathaniel Russell House originally held a cook room\, a laundry\, and three living chambers for its enslaved. It was said\, however\, that mid-20th century renovations had destroyed all remnants of its original fabric. Those beliefs were false. \nDiscovering new data in 2019\, Historic Charleston Foundation began peeling back modern materials within the Nathaniel Russell house’s kitchen and quarters\, a process that revealed original construction and new information once thought lost. These discoveries are now providing crucial information and representation to the heretofore unknown individuals that were enslaved there. \nAs Director of Museums for Historic Charleston Foundation\, Grahame Long leads all research\, stewardship\, interpretive and education initiatives at the Nathaniel Russell House and Aiken-Rhett House museums and serves as curator for the extensive collections therein. He has authored three books\, published numerous articles and lectured extensively throughout the southeast on various topics concerning material culture\, decorative arts and social histories of South Carolina. \nThe former chief curator for The Charleston Museum\, he is the resident historian for the German Friendly Society\, a member of the Mayor’s Walled City Task Force and an honorary member of the Washington Light Infantry. He is a volunteer curator for The Citadel Archives and Museum and works as a historical consultant for the U.S. Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:“Eric Crawford: Gullah Spirituals: The Sound of Freedom & Protest in the South Carolina Sea Islands” \nThe Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by musicologist Eric Crawford on June 25th on his book\, Gullah Spirituals: The Sound of Freedom & Protest in the South Carolina Sea Islands. \nJoin us to learn the history of Gullah Geechee songs from their beginnings in West Africa to their height as songs for social change and Black identity in the twentieth century American South. While much has been done to study\, preserve\, and interpret Gullah culture in the lowcountry and sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia\, some traditions like the shouting and rowing songs have been all but forgotten. This work\, which focuses primarily on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island\, illuminates the remarkable history\, survival\, and influence of spirituals since the earliest recordings in the 1860s. \nEric Sean Crawford is the director of the Benedict College Honors Program and holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the Catholic University of America. He is the former director of the Charles W. Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies at Coastal Carolina University\, served as musical consultant for the Amazon series Underground Railroad\, and is featured in Henry Louis Gates’s miniseries\, The Black Church. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. Produced and narrated by historian Rod Gragg\, this film follows the lives of two leading Generals in the American Civil War. \nAs Colonel of the 20th Maine Infantry\, Joshua Chamberlain is credited by many as saving the battle of Gettysburg for the Union Army through his defense of Little Round Top. Stonewall Jackson was renowned as a southern military genius and was known as General Robert E. DESCRIPTION:“The Impact of the Korean War on Horry County” \nThe Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture Nicholas Gallagher and Brogan Will on the impact of the Korean War on Horry County on Saturday\, July 9th at 1 PM. \nBoth Gallagher and Will were Prince Fellows during the 2021-2022 school year at Coastal Carolina University and conducted extensive research on Horry County during the Korean War. Nicholas is a History major at CCU\, and will graduate in December. He is a South Carolina Teaching Fellow and a member of the Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society. His research project examines the collective memory\, as well as the impacts\, of the Korean War on Horry County. \nBrogan recently graduated with a BA in History from CCU\, and is currently enrolled as a graduate student at CCU in the Masters in the Art of Teaching program. His research project examines the life\, death\, and repatriation of Master Sergeant Ernest Grainger\, a soldier who was missing in action in Korea\, until his remains were returned in 2012. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:The History\, Discovery\, and Recovery of the CSS Pee Dee armament at the Mars Bluff Naval Yard
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by State Underwater Archaeologist Jim Spirek on the History and Recovery of the CSS Pee Dee on July 16th at 1 PM.\nIn 2019\, three cannons from the CSS Pee Dee were installed between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs building and the National Cemetery in Florence\, South Carolina. The cannons were jettisoned at the Mars Bluff Naval Yard and the gunboat scuttled in the Great Pee Dee River during the waning days of the American Civil War. The presence of these cannons represents the culmination of several decades of searching\, discovering\, recovering and conserving them for public display. Situated between these two military edifices\, the display was not intended as a memorial\, but rather to reflect on the sacrifices made by those in the armed services and of the complexity of human conflict. The project to document and recover the cannons relied on private and public partnerships. This presentation will provide historical background and archaeological findings from the investigations of the cannons\, CSS Pee Dee\, and the Mars Bluff Naval Yard.\nJames Spirek\, the State Underwater Archaeologist for South Carolina\, works at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina\, Columbia.  Employed there since 1996 and holding his current position since 2012\, Jim’s responsibilities include managing and studying the maritime archaeological legacy residing in the lakes\, rivers\, and coastal waters of South Carolina.  Jim has participated in numerous projects documenting a diverse range of sunken prehistoric and historic watercraft\, Colonial and Native American sites\, Civil War warships and blockade runners\, and other underwater archaeological remains in state waters.  He is co-editor of Submerged Cultural Resource Management: Preserving and Interpreting Our Sunken Maritime Heritage\, and a co-contributor to Archaeology in South Carolina: Exploring the Hidden Heritage of the Palmetto State\, Florida’s Lost Galleon: The Emanuel Point Shipwreck\, and Guns of the Pee Dee: The Cannon Recovery.  Jim received his B.A. in History from George Mason University in 1987 and his M.A. in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University in 1993.\nThe program will be held on July 16th at 1 PM in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Steve Smith-Francis Marion
DESCRIPTION:“Steven Smith: Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community: Myth\, History and Archaeology” \nThe Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Steven Smith on July 23rd on his book\, Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community: Myth\, History and Archaeology. \nLoyalist Colonel Robert Gray described South Carolina as “a piece of patch work\, the inhabitants of every settlement\, when united in sentiment being in arms for the side they liked best and making continual inroads into one another’s settlements.” One of those pieces of patch work\, the people living on and surrounding Snow’s Island\, South Carolina\, were ‘united in sentiment’ against the British crown. This community of partisans had joined the rebellion as early as 1775 and had stubbornly refused to surrender\, even when Charleston fell in 1780. They had supplied food\, forage\, and blood to the rebellion and\, under the leadership of General Francis Marion\, had become an obstacle to British control of the southern colonies. This is their story. \nSteven D. Smith\, is a Research Professor at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina.  He is the former Director of the Institute\, and has over 40 years’ experience in historical archaeology\, largely focused on military sites of the American Revolution in the South.  He has conducted excavations associated with Francis Marion and American Revolutionary War battlefields including the siege of Fort Motte\, Parker’s Ferry\, Black Mingo\, Snow’s Island\, Camden\, the siege of Ninety Six\, and the battle of Williamson’s Plantation.  He is the author or co-author of six books\, including\, Partisans\, Guerillas\, and Irregulars:  Historical Archaeology of Asymmetric Warfare\, 2019\, University of Alabama Press\, and Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community\, United Writers Press\, 2021.  His latest book\, coauthored with Colonel Kevin Dougherty\, is entitled Leading Like the Swamp Fox: The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion\, Casemate Publishers\, was just published in June. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:The South Carolina Dispensary System and Prohibition
DESCRIPTION:Join Horry County Museum’s Technical Assistant Abigail Geedy on July 30th at 1 PM as she discusses the South Carolina Dispensary System and Prohibition in the state. By the early 1890s\, many assumed South Carolina was on the verge of declaring prohibition\, but in 1892 the dispensary system passed as an alternative. It wouldn’t be until multiple versions of the dispensary system fell out of favor that state prohibition was passed in 1915\, followed not far after by Federal Prohibition. This talk discusses an overview of the history and controversies of the dispensary system and state and federal prohibition with a focus on Horry County’s thoughts and reactions.\nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for 5 years before joining the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant. She has also previously worked as an intern or volunteer at the York County Heritage Trust in York\, PA\, the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg\, PA and McKissick Museum in Columbia\, SC.\nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm on July 30th in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Tobacco Heritage Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the ‘one horse family farm’ from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. For much of the 20th century\, tobacco was the main cash crop for Horry County and the Pee Dee Region. During the late summer\, leaves would be gathered and taken to the barn to be strung and cured\, this process required participation from all family members\, down to young children\, whose job would be to hand the tobacco leaves to a stringer. Join us to relive this experience on Tobacco Heritage Day\, Saturday\, August 6th\, from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Demonstrations will include gathering\, hand tying and stringing tobacco\, and a variety of other farm activities. \nThe L.W. SUMMARY:The End of the Road Bluegrass Band to perform at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The End of the Road Bluegrass Band on Saturday\, August 13th\, at 1:00 PM. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway\, South Carolina. Formed in 2001\, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches\, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne\, Carolina Blue\, and The Virginia Luthiers. Band members include Joe Hudson on guitar/vocals\, Ron Mew on mandolin/vocals\, Blake Marlowe on banjo/vocals\, Dean Hudson on Bass/vocals\, and Stephanie Sullivan on fiddle.
