DESCRIPTION:“Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Auction Houses\, Attempted Co-ops\, and Allotments: The Impact of Flue-Cured Tobacco on Horry County\, SC” \n  \nAfter the rise of the boll weevil made cotton crops unstable\, flue-cured tobacco became the main cash crop of Horry County. This presentation focuses on the impact of the auction system and the ways in which farmers and buyers attempted to push the prices in their favor. Join us on August 27th at 1 pm to learn more about the impact of flue-cured tobacco with Horry County Museum Technical Assistant Abigail Geedy. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for 5 years before joining the Horry County Museum Staff as the Technical Assistant in 2020. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the South Carolina ETV film\, Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century. Hurricane Hugo made landfall north of Charleston sometime around midnight September 22\, 1989. A category 4 storm\, Hugo caused significant damage along the South Carolina coast. The Grand Strand saw 12 foot high walls of water and almost every business along the coast had damage or was destroyed\, including three piers in Myrtle Beach. It’s estimated that at the time\, Hugo caused around $7 billion worth of damage to the area. SUMMARY:Snow Wolf to perform the Native American Flute at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free Native American Flute concert by Snow Wolf on Saturday\, October 15th\, at 1:00 PM. Those attending will experience the healing sounds of the Native American Flute and the Lore around this legendary instrument. Snow Wolf is a Native American style Flute Musician of Shoshone and Mohawk descent. Originally from Idaho\, he spent much of his childhood in South Carolina and New Mexico. His love for the sounds of Native American Flute music began early in life. While living in New Mexico he spent much of his time in the desert visiting historical places and learning the lore of nearby tribes\, most notably the stories of the Kokopelli (the traveling flute player). Many years passed before the instrument came to him in a very old traditional way. Soon after\, he set out on the road as a truck driver and taught himself to play the instrument. Along his travels\, he met others who also shared his passion for the Native American Flute. \nSnow Wolf has released 4 full length concept albums telling his own story of the life of a traveling flute player set several hundred years in the past.  He has also been featured in the song “Trail of Tears” by Tennessee Outlaw Country. \nThe concert will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on October 22nd on vertebrate fossils of the Upper Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers\, the National Science Teachers Association\, the National Center for Science Education\, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented on Saturday\, November 5th at 1 PM. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded over 300\,000 quilts to veterans. \nTo nominate a veteran for a Quilt of Valor\, visit www.qovf.org. \nThis program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Back to the Battlefield: Remembering D-Day. This locally produced film follows the late Mike Fitch of Conway\, an 89 year-old D-Day veteran\, as he returned to Omaha Beach in France for the first time since landing as an American combat soldier on June 6\, 1944. Attached to the 116th Regimental Combat Team on D-Day\, Fitch landed in the second wave of American troops on Charlie Sector\, which was one of “Bloody Omaha’s” deadliest landing sites. \nShot on location in France\, Back to the Battlefield leads the viewer through the beaches\, battlefields\, hedgerows and villages of modern Normandy.
