SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on September 16th on vertebrate fossils of the Late Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. He will also discuss ongoing research on a variety of microfossils that can be found in the region. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers\, the National Science Teachers Association\, the National Center for Science Education\, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Marian Calder on Saturday\, September 9th on Peter Horry. Many of us have heard of Francis Marion thanks to the romanticized stories by Parson Weems. But what about the man who served with him and for whom Horry County is named? Join us to learn more about Peter Horry\, his role in the Revolutionary War\, and beyond. \nMarian Calder is the Assistant Director for the Horry County Museum. She received her Bachelor’s degree in History from Coker College in 2007. In 2011\, she began working full time with the Horry County Museum and L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of slaves from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Carl Freeman\, Jr. was a longtime resident and educator in Horry County. His talents reached from artist\, to furniture maker\, woodcarver\, musician\, composer\, gardener and plant breeder\, to antique and art collecting. Upon his death\, he bequeathed the contents of his house to the Horry County Museum to be utilized in the manner that best suited the Museum’s needs. In recognition of his generous donation\, the Horry County Museum is pleased to announce the unveiling of the Dr. Carl Freeman\, Jr. Archival Room on Saturday\, August 26th at  1 PM. The event will include a performance in the McCown Auditorium featuring piano music arranged and written by Dr. Freeman.   \n“We are grateful for Dr. Freeman’s generosity and are excited to continue his legacy of education through the creation of an Archival Room” said Walter Hill\, Director of the Horry County Museum. “We invite members of the public to attend this celebration and join us in recognizing Dr. Freeman’s lasting contribution to the Museum.”\nAdmission is free to the August 26th event.  The McCown Auditorium is located on the campus of the Horry County Museum at 805 Main Street in Conway. This 30 minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club. SUMMARY:Carin Bloom: Women Waging War in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Carin Bloom on her contribution to the book Women Waging War in the American Revolution on August 12th at 1 PM.  Carin’s lecture recounts the few known details of Lucy Banbury’s harrowing escape from enslavement in South Carolina\, her allegiance to the British Army as a Black Loyalist during the American Revolution\, and her eventual freedom in Nova Scotia\, Canada and beyond. \nWomen Waging War in the American Revolution examines the impact of Revolutionary-era women on the outcomes of the war and its subsequent narrative tradition\, from popular perception to academic treatment. The contributors show how women navigated a country at war\, directly affected the war’s result\, and influenced the foundational historical record left in its wake. Engaging directly with that record\, this volume’s authors demonstrate the ways that the Revolution transformed women’s place in America as it offered new opportunities but also imposed new limitations in the brave new world they helped create. \nCarin Bloom is a public historian with undergraduate and graduate degrees in historic sites archaeology – particularly sites of the American Revolution. Her passion over the past two decades has been sharing the hidden histories of the Colonial era with interested audiences through conventional and unconventional programs. Bringing diverse narratives to light that have been long ignored is a particular focus of hers. Carin is the Manager of Education and Programming for the Historic Charleston Foundation in Charleston\, SC\, where she puts her passion to work every day for K-12 visitors\, as well as in planning and executing interpretive programming for learners of all ages and historical interests. \nThe program will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:American Alligators in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free program on August 8th at 1 PM by Rebecca Cavalier on The South Carolina Department of Natural Resource’s Alligator Project. The Project is responsible for the statewide management of alligators. This includes statewide scientific surveys on alligator individuals and populations\, education and outreach about alligators and ways to stay “Alligator Safe”\, and permitting for removal\, transporting\, or captive alligators. \nRebecca Cavalier is a wildlife biologist for SCDNR and is the Nuisance Alligator Coordinator for the upper coastal region of South Carolina. She assists in all things alligators\, but her main responsibilities include nuisance alligator management and the continued development of alligator education and outreach. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Tobacco Heritage Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:See history come to life at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! The Farm will host its annual Tobacco Heritage Day on Saturday\, August 5th from 9 AM-Noon. For much of the 20th century\, tobacco was the main cash crop for Horry County and the Pee Dee Region and provided an income for many farm families in the area. During the late summer\, leaves were gathered and taken to the barn to be strung and cured. This process required participation from all family members\, down to young children\, whose job would be to hand the tobacco leaves to a stringer. Demonstrations will include gathering\, hand tying and stringing tobacco\, and a variety of other farm activities. \nThe L.W. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free program on July 22nd at 1 PM on local plants and wildlife. Join us as retired CCU professor Steve Berkowitz shares images and videos of local wildlife including birds\, mammals\, reptiles\, insects and flowers that he has collected from natural areas throughout Horry and adjacent Counties. \nBerkowitz completed his graduate training and thesis work was at Texas A&M University\, in biological oceanography\, specializing in zooplankton and Antarctic krill. He was hired as the Assistant Director of the Center of Marine and Wetland Studies at CCU in 1991. After some years\, he transitioned to a full-time position as Lab Coordinator and Senior Instructor from which he retired in 2011. He has participated in dozens of research expeditions in Antarctica\, the Gulf of Mexico and the Western Atlantic Ocean. He also spent five years as an environmental consultant\, based out of Virginia and Florida \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I\, Freddie Stowers\, and Alvin York. Stowers\, a native of South Carolina\, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action wile leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991\, and became the first African-American soldier to receive the award in World War I. Also a corporal in the US Army\, York went from being a conscientious objector to war hero when he captured more than one hundred German prisoners of war in combat. SUMMARY:J.R. Fennell to speak on the history of alcohol in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free program on July 8th at 1 PM on the history of alcohol and drinking in the state of South Carolina. Attendees will learn about the alcoholic beverages that South Carolinians enjoyed in the colonial period through the end of prohibition. This presentation will also teach attendees about the movement to limit or ban alcohol and the state dispensary system. \nJ.R. Fennell\, a native of Walterboro\, South Carolina and lifelong history enthusiast\, is the director of the Lexington County Museum located in downtown Lexington\, SC.  He has a master’s degree in public history and a graduate certificate in museum management from the University of South Carolina.  While in graduate school\, Fennell researched many topics relating to the history of SC\, focusing on the colonial period and the twentieth century.  J.R. previously worked at the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum\, working in the education department\, the archives department\, the collections management department\, and in the public relations department.  He also completed internships with the City of Columbia planning department and Meadors Construction in Charleston\, worked at McKissick Museum\, and served as the acting director of the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation.  J.R. has been director of the Lexington County Museum since July 2007.  At the museum\, he has focused on publicizing the museum and its collections while still continuing to research the county’s history and collect artifacts that were made and used in Lexington County.  He loves being able to educate tourists and locals about the rich history of the county and the state. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gettysburg: On Fields of Fire & Valor. This film\, written and narrated by Rod Gragg\, chronicles the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg\, which was the decisive battle of the American Civil War. \nAt the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1-3\, 1863\, more than 95\,000 Northern troops led by General George Meade engaged in battle with approximately 75\,000 Southern soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee. Meade’s Army of the Potomac was defeated by Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia on the battle’s opening day\, but held off Lee’s attacks for the next two days\, and the battle ended in a major Northern victory.
