SUMMARY:Smokehouse Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 24th from 9 AM-Noon at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! The public is invited to experience how families would have prepared pork to be preserved on a typical Horry County Farm in the early 1900s. Winter was a season when the farm family was often dependent on home preserved foods\, and the perfect time of year for curing pork. Once the meat was cured\, families could not only eat the pork during the winter season\, but also throughout the year. No part of the animal was wasted on the farm\, from using the fat to render into lard\, to creating dishes like chitterlings\, hog head cheese\, or even pickled pig’s feet! Demonstrations include the carving and preparation of pork\, salting and curing meat in the smokehouse\, rendering lard\, cooking demos\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The Farm is free and open to the public and is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Shortcut Road in Conway\, SC. For more information\, please contact the L. W. Paul Living History Farm at 843-915-5321 or email the Horry County Museum at hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. \nFor a full list of programs and events at the Horry County Museum and L.W. SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves\, to the environmentalists\, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 4th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2026. SUMMARY:Joseph McGill\, Jr. to present The Slave Dwelling Project
DESCRIPTION:For the past 16 years\, Joe McGill has been sleeping in former slave dwellings throughout the United States. His adventures are now chronicled in the book Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery. Join us at the Horry County Museum at 1 PM on Saturday\, February 7th as McGill discusses why this simple act is still being requested by historic sites of enslavement. \nJoseph McGill\, Jr.\, is the founder of the Slave Dwelling Project. By arranging for people to sleep in extant slave dwellings\, this project has brought much needed attention to these often-neglected structures that are vitally important to the American built environment. He has conducted over 250 overnights in approximately 150 different sites in 25 states and the District of Columbia. He has interacted with the descendants of both the enslaved communities and of the enslavers associated with antebellum historic sites. He speaks with school children and college students\, with historical societies\, community groups\, and members of the public. \nSince 2016\, McGill has expanded the Slave Dwelling Project to offer a program of living history called “Inalienable Rights: Living History Through the Eyes of the Enslaved.” The Project has conducted 7 conferences since 2013. Mr. McGill was a field officer for the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, working to revitalize the Sweet Auburn commercial district in Atlanta\, GA and to develop a management plan for the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area. \nMr. McGill served as the Executive Director of the African American Museum located in Cedar Rapids\, Iowa. He is also the former Director of History and Culture at Penn Center\, St. Helena Island\, South Carolina. Penn School was the first school built during the Civil War for the education of recently freed slaves. \nMr. McGill appears in the book Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz. He is also a member of the South Carolina Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. \nThis event will be held at the Horry County Museum located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. SUMMARY:Sweet Repeats
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us on Tuesday\, March 3rd at 11 AM as Certified Quilt Appraiser Brenda Grampsas shares a trunk show featuring quilts and a few garments made from or embellished with vintage/antique linens or lace.  This includes doilies\, dresser scarves\, embroidered pillow cases\, hankies\, tablecloths and other textile treasures we often inherit. These items are too precious to discard but what is to be done with them?  Inspiration is the goal….. \nBrenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser\, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov . SUMMARY:Jill Messier: Secret Window & Attic Window Quilts
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a variety of topics. In addition to the free programming\, you’ll have a chance to win a door prize at every event! Join us Thursday\, March 5th at 1 PM as local quilter Jill Messier shows off a collection of quilts featuring Secret Window and Attic Window patterns. The quilts\, many supplied by quilters in the Conway Quilt Guild\, will feature panels made by fabric that were cut into strips or blocks. \nJill Messier moved to Conway from Enfield\, Connecticut in 2018 and arrived two days before Hurricane Florence. She began quilting in the 1970s after visiting a neighbor who quilts. Messier used the book Lap Quilting by Georgie Bonesteel to create a quilt in the Grandmother’s Fan pattern. After preparing and sewing the quilt by hand\, Messier soon found that she had a new hobby. She has currently finished nearly 100 quilts ranging in size from baby to king\, with all but 2 being quilted by hand. Many quilts have been kept or gifted to friends and family\, while some have won ribbons at shows. She also likes to use leftover material to create other items\, such as origami butterflies\, wallets\, cozies\, iPad covers and purses. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. SUMMARY:Tina Harr: Scrappy Quilts
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout the month of March at the Horry County Museum! Join us March 10th at 11 AM as local quilter Tina Harr shows off a collection of scrappy quilts. \nA native of the Hudson Valley in New York\, Tina Harr is proud to call Conway her home for over 10 years. Her first sewing experience was with her grandmother making 9 patch blocks the old fashioned way: marking the fabric with a pen and square cut from a cereal box and doing all the cutting with scissors. The quilts they made were tied and a bedsheet was the backing material. \nIn 2000\, Tina joined a quilt group in NY and learned about all the innovations that had happened since the early ’70’s\, rotary cutters\, thick plastic templates……etc.  Being part of the Serendipity Stitchers was something she missed when she first moved to Conway\, and when her friend Patsy Ray told her about the Conway Quilters she joined them in their second year. The things Tina loves most about the group are their charitable endeavors and being part of the Quilts of Valor program. \nThis program is free to the public. The Horry County Museum is located at 805 Main St.\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov . SUMMARY:Brenda Grampsas: Everything Old is New Again
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Countless quilt designs made by our ancestors are still being made today. Join us on March 17th at 11 AM as Brenda Grampsas presents quilts from her collection of antique and vintage quilts with modern examples of those same designs. Quilt designs we love today were loved in by gone eras. Be inspired to make your own updated version of a quilt that our Grandmothers made so long ago.
