SUMMARY:The Education of Harvey Gantt.
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV film The Education of Harvey Gantt. This 30 minute film tells the story of Harvey Gantt\, the first African American student to attend a formerly all-white school in South Carolina. \nSouth Carolina fought the desegregation of its schools longer than any other state\, even after the passage of Brown v. Clemson College was the only school in South Carolina that offered a degree in his chosen field. In January of 1963\, with the help of NAACP lawyer Matthew J. SUMMARY:Smokehouse Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 25th from 9 AM-Noon at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! The public is invited to experience how families would have prepared pork to be preserved on a typical Horry County Farm in the early 1900s. Winter was a season when the farm family was often dependent on home preserved foods\, and the perfect time of year for curing pork. Once the meat was cured\, families could not only eat the pork during the winter season\, but also throughout the year. No part of the animal was wasted on the farm\, from using the fat to render into lard\, to creating dishes like chitterlings\, hog head cheese\, or even pickled pig’s feet! Demonstrations include the carving and preparation of pork\, salting and curing meat in the smokehouse\, rendering lard\, cooking demos\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The Farm is free and open to the public and is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Shortcut Road in Conway\, SC. For more information\, please contact the L. W. Paul Living History Farm at 843-915-5321 or email the Horry County Museum at hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. \nFor a full list of programs and events at the Horry County Museum and L.W. SUMMARY:Kathryn Hedgepath: Myrtle Beach Movies (1967-2015)
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program on the movies that were made or premiered in Myrtle Beach\, on Saturday\, March 1st\, at 1:00 PM. Hollywood stars brought big screen magic to the Grand Strand for nearly 50 years. Their works ranged from major studio productions to award-winning independent films. The drama behind those movies and the lives of their filmmakers often rivaled that of the movies themselves. Myrtle Beach History Tours Creator and Narrator\, and the author of the book\, Myrtle Beach Movies\, Kathryn Cox Hedgepath\, will share some behind the scenes stories about those motion pictures that were in theaters from 1967–2015. \nMyrtle Beach native\, Kathryn Cox Hedgepath\, is the creator and narrator of the Myrtle Beach History Trolley and Step-On Tours. She has traveled to forty countries on six continents and uses her experience to convey our local history through a world lens. Kathryn returned home from NYC in 2002 to marry her beloved husband\, Jenks\, after a career in television and publishing (and even worked in Space Shuttle Operations at NASA Headquarters in DC for a semester before starting graduate school at Georgetown University). Her first career job was as Personal Assistant to television icon and wildlife expert\, Jim Fowler\, of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom fame. Her dad\, Myrtle Beach’s first veterinarian\, arranged the job interview when Jim Fowler spoke at a veterinary conference in Myrtle Beach. She is proud to be able to trace her family history in Horry County back to the Pre-Revolutionary War years\, and enjoys sharing our local history with visitors\, newcomers\, and locals. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Tina Harr: Every Quilt has a Story
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout the month of March at the Horry County Museum! Join us March 4th at 11 AM as local quilter Tina Harr shares the stories behind a variety of quilts. \nA native of the Hudson Valley in New York\, Tina Harr is proud to call Conway her home for over 10 years. Her first sewing experience was with her grandmother making 9 patch blocks the old fashioned way: marking the fabric with a pen and square cut from a cereal box and doing all the cutting with scissors. The quilts they made were tied and a bedsheet was the backing material. \nIn 2000\, Tina joined a quilt group in NY and learned about all the innovations that had happened since the early ’70’s\, rotary cutters\, thick plastic templates……etc.  Being part of the Serendipity Stitchers was something she missed when she first moved to Conway\, and when her friend Patsy Ray told her about the Conway Quilters she joined them in their second year. The things Tina loves most about the group are their charitable endeavors and being part of the Quilts of Valor program. \nThis program is free to the public. The Horry County Museum is located at 805 Main St.\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov . SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. \nIn 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 12th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025.
