The ancestors of these Native Americans managed to flee U.S. soldiers in 1838 when the Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented on Saturday\, November 5th at 1 PM. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded over 300\,000 quilts to veterans. \nTo nominate a veteran for a Quilt of Valor\, visit www.qovf.org. \nThis program is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Back to the Battlefield: Remembering D-Day
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Back to the Battlefield: Remembering D-Day. This locally produced film follows the late Mike Fitch of Conway\, an 89 year-old D-Day veteran\, as he returned to Omaha Beach in France for the first time since landing as an American combat soldier on June 6\, 1944. Attached to the 116th Regimental Combat Team on D-Day\, Fitch landed in the second wave of American troops on Charlie Sector\, which was one of “Bloody Omaha’s” deadliest landing sites. \nShot on location in France\, Back to the Battlefield leads the viewer through the beaches\, battlefields\, hedgerows and villages of modern Normandy. Enhanced by historic newsreel footage\, the one-hour documentary chronicles the dramatic story of D-Day as retold on-the-scene by Fitch\, a World War II combat veteran whose vivid memories give viewers a unique you-are-there exposure to the world-changing events of D-Day. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, November 9th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2022. SUMMARY:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:A large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane would be gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice could be squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 19th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nEarly every weekday morning\, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island\, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat\, the Prince Washington\, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However\, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact\, they fought to keep it this way. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Incident at Mars Bluff.  This 30 minute film\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, explores how the world’s most technologically advanced air power came to drop a three-ton nuclear device on a small town in South Carolina. Interviews with the surviving members of the Gregg family will reveal how the incident affected them then and to this day. DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 21st between 9 AM and 12 PM at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! Winter was the time of year for curing pork on the farm and a season when the family was dependent on home preserved foods during the cold winter months. Demonstrations by our staff and volunteers include the carving and preparation of pork\, salting and curing in the smokehouse\, making lye soap\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. SUMMARY:Virginia Ellison: What’s in Your Attic?
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Virginia Ellison at 1:00 PM on January 28th. Ellison will discuss the benefits and procedures of donating materials to an archives or museum\, how to navigate the donation process\, including which questions to ask and what factors to consider when donating a family heirloom\, and basic preservation that you can do at home. \nVirginia Ellison is the VP of Collections and COO of the South Carolina Historical Society where she oversees all archival and museum operations. She attended the College of Charleston\, where she earned a BS in anthropology and then received her MLIS from the University of South Carolina in 2011. She attended the Georgia Archives Institute in June 2012\, and received her certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists in 2016. Virginia is past president of the Charleston Archives\, Libraries & Museums Council (CALM) and serves as a District Representative for the Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies (CSCLHS). She’s been with the society for ten years. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526.
