SUMMARY:The End of the Road Bluegrass Band to perform at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The End of the Road Bluegrass Band on Saturday\, August 15th at 1:00 PM. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway\, South Carolina. Formed in 2001\, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches\, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne\, Carolina Blue\, and The Virginia Luthiers. Band members include Joe Hudson on guitar/vocals\, Ron Mew on mandolin/vocals\, Blake Marlowe on banjo/vocals\, and Stephanie Sullivan on fiddle. \nThe concert will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I\, Freddie Stowers\, and Alvin York. Stowers\, a native of South Carolina\, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action while leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991\, and became the first African American soldier to receive the award in World War I. Also\, a corporal in the US Army\, Alvin York went from being a conscientious objector to war hero when he captured more than one hundred German prisoners of war in combat. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, August 19th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2026. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program in collaboration with Coastal Carolina University and the South Carolina 250th Commission on Saturday\, August 22nd\, 2026 at 1 PM. This lecture will cover The Formation of Chickamauga Towns: A Study of Cherokee Gender\, Kinship\, and Resistance in the Revolutionary Era. \nJamie Myers is as historian of American Indians of the Southeastern United States. She received her B.A. in history from Truett0McConnell University\, her M.A. from the University of North Georgia and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She is currently an associate professor of History at the University of North Carolina\, Pembroke\, where she teaches courses on American Indian history\, the history of global Indigenous peoples and the colonial and early American history. Her talk will be based on the recently published essay entitled The Formation of the Chickamauga Towns: A Study of Cherokee Gender\, Kinship\, and Resistance in the Revolutionary Era in the Gendered Republic: Reimagining Identity in the New Nation edited by Craig Friend and Lori Glover. \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by acting Chief Cheryl Cail on the Waccamaw Indian People on Saturday\, August 29th at 1 PM. \nCheryl Cail is the Acting Chief of the Waccamaw Indian People and Chairperson of SC Idle No More; a SC Indian Affairs Commission committee which focuses on environmental and cultural preservation\, and indigenous sovereignty. She is a small business owner\, the mother of three sons and grandmother of seven. She is currently attending Coastal Carolina University pursuing a B.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Environmental and Cultural Sustainability of Indigenous Lands. \nCheryl has been a guest speaker\, presenter and panelist at college lecture series and community events\, as well as a consultant and contributor for academic publications and reports. She is a co-founder of the Indigenize SC Education Task Force\, serves as a member of the board of the Waccamaw Community Foundation\, on the leadership team for the National PFAS Contamination Coalition\, and is a sitting member of the Council of Chiefs of the Tribal Alliance of South Carolina Nations. \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Charlie’s Place. This 30-minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club. SUMMARY:Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century. Hurricane Hugo made landfall north of Charleston sometime around midnight September 22\, 1989. A category 4 storm\, Hugo caused significant damage along the South Carolina coast. The Grand Strand saw 12 foot high walls of water and almost every business along the coast had damage or was destroyed\, including three piers in Myrtle Beach. It’s estimated that at the time\, Hugo caused around $7 billion worth of damage to the area. SUMMARY:Wire & Wood Bluegrass Band to Perform at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free bluegrass concert by Wire & Wood on Saturday\, September 26th at 1 PM. \nWire and Wood is\, first and foremost\, a group of friends who enjoy getting together and making music. The band features Tammy Holt on bass\, Jason Todd on mandolin\, Danny Newton on banjo\, Mike Monk on guitar\, and William Hardee on fiddle. Every member is a multi-instrumentalist and brings years of experience performing both close to home and on stages throughout the region\, including appearances alongside many well-known and accomplished professional musicians. \nYou never quite know what you’ll hear at a Wire and Wood show. Their repertoire moves from fast\, hard-driving bluegrass to gospel\, country\, and plenty in between\, with a focus on good songs\, strong picking and singing\, and having a good time making music together. The name Wire and Wood began with a wedding music business started by Jason and William—a nod to the strings and wooden instruments that make acoustic music what it is—and eventually became the natural name for the band as well. \nThe concert is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, S.C.
