SUMMARY:Museum Matinee: Southern Stews
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Southern Stews: A Taste of the South. \nThe traditions of cooking communal stews in huge black iron pots stirred with wooden paddles have long been a way of Southern gatherings-whether at hunt clubs\, church or family reunions\, during holidays\, or special events such as commemorating the end of harvests or to feed workers helping out at hog-killing time. These stews required a number of workers\, with a division of labor usually split between women who would prepare vegetables for the stews and men working in shifts under a stew-master to constantly stir the stew for up to 18 hours before serving. This documentary\, introduced and narrated by Southern food writer\, John Egerton\, takes the viewer across the South and is a fabulous opportunity to connect the dots between such Southern stews such as Burgoo\, Brunswick stew\, Carolina Hash\, Frogmore stew\, chicken bog\, and sheep stew. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, December 30th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nFor a full list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

SUMMARY:Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Barbecue & Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile. This documentary was made to promote folklore and folklife experiences visitors might have in the economically depressed four-counties of the Region III SC National Heritage Corridor. These counties bear primary roots to the beginnings and growth of barbecue in South Carolina. This film explores eateries where the cooks heading up the kitchens or barbecue pits have agrarian family roots and were first taught on wood stoves or by the side of heralded barbecue pit-men. They maintain today’s recipes with ingredients and cooking methods learned at the side of mothers\, fathers\, aunts\, uncles or grandparents in these farming communities. Music by South Carolina roots musicians moves the viewer along as they hit the road with filmmaker Stan Woodward and the folklorist from McKissick Museum as they ‘root-out’ these sites. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 20th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. SUMMARY:Museum Matinee: Carolina Hash
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the documentary\, Carolina Hash: A South Carolina Folk Heritage Tradition. Hash is only cooked primarily in South Carolina. If you travel across the border into NC or Georgia\, you find that few have ever heard of hash. Filmmaker Stan Woodward discovered this anomaly while researching the difference between Brunswick stews cooked regionally. He gathered footage while shooting the Brunswick stew documentaries that led to this unusual film. Updated with new content that answered questions about the unusual place that mustard had in the barbecue sauce and hash ingredients found in the midlands of South Carolina\, the story of has was enhanced to include the records of French Huguenot writers who wrote of “hashiers”\, which was cooked in Carolina Rice Kitchens by African American artisan cooks who were given poor parts of the hog and told to make an edible concoction that provided a high-protein content for slaves working in the scorching heat. We learn that Hash-cooking migrated inland from plantations to small farms and became commonplace-along with puddin’ and liver mush-as a byproduct foodway cooked as part of the hog-killing that took place in the winter months. Hash today is a common side-dish eaten over rice along with barbecue in South Carolina. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 24th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. SUMMARY:Tina Harr-Wrapped up in Quilting
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free quilt turning featuring wall hangings and large quilts by local quilter Tina Harr. Tina’s talk will be held at the Horry County Museum (805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC) on Tuesday\, March 9th at 1 PM. \nA native of the Hudson Valley in New York\, Tina Harr is proud to call Conway her home for over 10 years. Her first sewing experience was with her grandmother making 9 patch blocks the old fashioned way: marking the fabric with a pen and square cut from a cereal box and doing all the cutting with scissors. The quilts they made were tied and a bedsheet was the backing material. \nIn 2000\, Tina joined a quilt group in NY and learned about all the innovations that had happened since the early ’70’s\, rotary cutters\, thick plastic templates……etc.  Being part of the Serendipity Stitchers was something she missed when she first moved to Conway\, and when her friend Patsy Ray told her about the Conway Quilters she joined them in their second year. The things Tina loves most about the group are their charitable endeavors and being part of the Quilts of Valor program. \nThis program is free to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. To view a full list of programs\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Kathleen Stuart: Wholecloth Quilts
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a free program by quilter Kathleen Stuart on March 10th on Wholecloth Quilts. When it comes to “traditional” quilts\, Kathy prefers to make wholecloth quilts using the traditional medallion style\, however\, she likes to use luxe fabrics such as silk dupioni or sateen and often incorporates machine embroidery. Kathy also likes to use fabric paints on her wholecloth quilts and Swarovski crystals. \nOriginally from Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Kathy now lives in North Carolina so that she can enjoy the warmer weather. She has been interested in every aspect of fiber since the age of four\, having tried almost every technique including knitting\, crochet\, needlepoint\, tatting\, macramé and quilting\, although she didn’t begin to quilt until 2001. \nKathy began to compete in quilt shows and found that her style of quilting didn’t fit into any of the categories….people just don’t do wholecloth anymore. Because of this her work was put into the “other” category\, which she realized was a good thing. It has allowed her to try new things and stretch the idea of what a wholecloth quilt can be by adding more paint and beading\, while still maintaining the traditional aspects of this type of quilt. \nKathy has won many awards for her work including Best of Show for her machine quilting at Machine Quilters Showcase. Her work has been featured in magazines\, newspapers and video presentations\, one of which was a vidcast by B. McCaffery of the Houston Quilt Show. At the Asheville Quilt Show\, she was asked to do a short video for the series “Go Tell It At The Quilt Show” for the Quilt Alliance\, a group that documents\, preserves and shares the stories of quilters and their quilts. \nThe program will begin at 10:00 am at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
