SUMMARY:Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold Returns to the Blues
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the documentary\, Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold Returns to the Blues. Southpaw bassist and South Carolina native Mac Arnold was only ten years old when he and his brother built a guitar out of a gas can\, a couple strips of wood\, a handful of nails\, and some screen wire. Arnold played in J. Floyd & the Shamrocks (who frequently featured a young James Brown on piano) while still in high school\, and officially began his professional career when he joined Charles Miller’s band in the early ’60s. He moved to Chicago around 1965 and began working with saxophonist A.C. Reed before hooking up with Muddy Waters and his band in 1966. The Waters stint led to a fair amount of studio work\, and Arnold played bass on several 1960s blues albums\, including Otis Spann’s The Blues Is Where It’s At and John Lee Hooker’s Live at Cafe Au Go Go. By the 1980s Arnold had tired of the road and moved back to South Carolina\, settling in his hometown of Pelzer\, where for all practical purposes he retired from the music business. A group of local musicians kept after him to start performing again\, though\, which led to Arnold eventually fronting his own band\, Mac Arnold & Plate Full o’ Blues. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, April 26th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2023. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Flora & Fauna of the Carolina Bays
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Carolina Bays in Horry County are the only place in South Carolina you can find Venus Fly Traps growing wild? Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions housing temporary wetlands surrounded by sandy rims. The origin of these dense and marshy depressions have been debated since being brought into the scientific spotlight thanks to aerial photography of the Myrtle Beach area in the 1930s. What isn’t up for debate is the unique and familiar wildlife that call the Carolina Bays home\, including multiple species of carnivorous plants. Stop by the McCown Auditorium at 1 PM on April 29th to learn more about some of the wildlife of the Carolina Bays with Horry County Museum Curator Abigail Geedy. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. In 2020\, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant and moved into the Curator position in 2022. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Barbecue & Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Barbecue & Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile. This documentary was made to promote folklore and folklife experiences visitors might have in the economically depressed four-counties of the Region III SC National Heritage Corridor. These counties bear primary roots to the beginnings and growth of barbecue in South Carolina. This film explores eateries where the cooks heading up the kitchens or barbecue pits have agrarian family roots and were first taught on wood stoves or by the side of heralded barbecue pit-men. They maintain today’s recipes with ingredients and cooking methods learned at the side of mothers\, fathers\, aunts\, uncles or grandparents in these farming communities. Music by South Carolina roots musicians moves the viewer along as they hit the road with filmmaker Stan Woodward and the folklorist from McKissick Museum as they ‘root-out’ these sites. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, May 3rd\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2023. For a list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycountysc.gov.

SUMMARY:Military Appreciation Month Celebrated at the Horry County Museum on May 6
DESCRIPTION:            Veterans of the American Armed Forces\, active-duty military personnel\, and the general public are invited to a celebration of Military Appreciation Month at McCown Auditorium on Saturday\, May 6 at 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by the  Horry County Museum and the United Bank Center for Military & Veteran Studies at Coastal Carolina University in recognition of National Military Appreciation Month\, which is the month of May. \nThe event will include public recognition of veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and active-duty members of the U.S. military in attendance\, and will also feature a special screening of the new documentary film Courage in Korea: A Soldier’s Story.   \nThe documentary presents the little-known story of the Korean War through the experiences of the late Sergeant Paul Thompkins\, a Korean War veteran from Conway\, South Carolina.  Thompkins\, who became a local pastor after the war\, was engaged in combat in Korea with the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division\, was captured when U.S. lines were overrun by the Chinese army\, and spent more than two-and-a-half years as a prisoner-of-war in North Korea’s Communist prison camps. \n“Sergeant Thompkins’ story is a very moving\, memorable\, and appropriate subject for observing Military Appreciation Month\,” said Rod Gragg\, who is one of the film’s producers and the director of the United Bank Center for Military & Veteran Studies. “Courage in Korea is an important reminder of the extraordinary service of a generation of American veterans who served in the U.S. military during the Korean War\, and whose experiences in many ways typify all members of the American Armed Forces.”\nThe month of May was officially recognized as Military Appreciation Month by a resolution in the United States Senate in 1999.  May was chosen for the honor because of the large number of military-related holiday during the month\, including Memorial Day\, Armed Forces Day\, V-E Day\, and Military Spouse Appreciation Day.  Recognition of Military Appreciation Month was intended by the U.S. Senate to honor the service and sacrifices rendered by members of the U.S. military over the ages. \nAdmission is free to the May 6th event.  The McCown Auditorium is located on the campus of the Horry County Museum and the Horry County Memorial Library at 805 Main Street in Conway. \n“We invite members of the public to attend this celebration of Military Appreciation Month\,” said Marian Haynes Calder\, Assistant Director of the Horry County Museum. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude to members and veterans of our Armed Forces while joining them for a very special documentary and inspiring story.”

SUMMARY:Two Pistols\, Two Seconds: Dueling in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Grahame Long on May 13th\, on the history of dueling in South Carolina. \nSouth Carolina’s penchant for dueling started early and occurred often with taste and caste refining most conflicts. But\, what was first regarded as an honorable tradition outside the commoner’s courtroom had\, by the mid-19th century\, been turned on its ear. Dueling found full expression in both frequency and public acceptance throughout the State. Worse\, duelists’ seemingly insatiable social demands for the preservation of honor\, character and satisfaction usually ended up costing of lives. \nAs Director of Museums for Historic Charleston Foundation\, Grahame Long leads all research\, stewardship\, interpretive and education initiatives at the Nathaniel Russell House and Aiken-Rhett House museums and serves as curator for the extensive collections therein. He has authored three books\, published numerous articles and lectured extensively throughout the southeast on various topics concerning material culture\, decorative arts and social histories of South Carolina. \nThe former chief curator for The Charleston Museum\, he is the resident historian for the German Friendly Society\, a member of the Mayor’s Walled City Task Force and an honorary member of the Washington Light Infantry. SUMMARY:Save the Last Dance for Me: A Love Story of the Shag and the Society of Stranders
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Tom Poland\, on May 20th\, on the book he co-authored with Phil Sawyer: Save the Last Dance for Me: A Love Story of the Shag and the Society of Stranders. \nThe shag\, the official state dance of North and South Carolina\, originated in the 1930s. The dance quickly spread throughout the South\, where it became a legend in many beach regions. Save the Last Dance for Me is the story of the shag and the development of the Society of Stranders\, an organization devoted to the dance and its culture. \nIn Save the Last Dance for Me\, Phil Sawyer and Tom Poland retell the story of the legendary dance and its iconic presence at Ocean Drive\, Myrtle Beach\, and other South Carolina beaches. While contributing memories of shagging on Ocean Drive\, Sawyer and Poland also discuss the actual dance steps that make up the shag. With the retelling of the shag story comes the unique story of the Society of Stranders. Formed in 1980 after a Red Sea Balsam bottle containing an SOS note washed ashore as a practical joke\, what resulted was increased national publicity and five thousand “stranders” flocking to Ocean Drive Beach to show their support for the shag culture. The Society of Stranders\, or SOS\, and the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs together now consist of more than fifteen thousand members. The shag’s past\, present\, and future are described here with archival and contemporary photographs. \nThe shag has become an important part of coastal culture for thousands\, particularly in North Myrtle Beach\, a community that has embraced the legacy of this dance. Save the Last Dance for Me tells the story of cultural change\, including the separation and integration of races\, and chronicles how rhythm and blues\, Motown\, and beach music evolved to create a social phenomenon that is still popular today. \nTom Poland writes about the South\, its people\, culture\, and natural features. His career is one of books\, magazine writing-editorship\, filmmaking\, and photography. Poland’s weekly column appears in more than 65 newspapers and online journals. An oft-requested speaker\, Poland gives talks throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. Governor Henry McMaster conferred the Order of the Palmetto\, South Carolina’s highest civilian order\, upon him for his body of work. A Georgia native and graduate of the University of Georgia\, he lives in Columbia\, South Carolina. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: The Bigham Family Murders: Three Trials and a Family History
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 10th at 1 pm at the Horry County Museum to learn about South Carolina’s sensational murder trial of the 20th century and the family behind it. The Bigham Family was a prominent family in Marion and Florence Counties often whispered about and feared by their neighbors. Throughout 6 generations of the family living in SC\, a number of the members were accused of circumventing the law\, murdering family members and workers\, and general unpleasantness\, culminating in the events of January 15\, 1921 where 5 members of the family were killed. The surviving member of the family\, Edmund Bigham\, was put on trial for the murders and was tried three separate times\, once in Florence County and twice in Conway\, SC\, all while maintaining that it was his brother\, Smiley\, who had killed his family then taken his own life. This talk will detail the family history of the Bighams and the trials of Edmund Bigham. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. In 2020\, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant and moved into the Curator position in 2022. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. The name\, Melvin Horace Purvis\, to many people today\, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name\, and over 260\,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis\, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name\, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day\, including John Dillinger\, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide\, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? Or was there something more sinister behind it? \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 14th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2023. SUMMARY:Gettysburg: On Fields of Fire & Valor
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gettysburg: On Fields of Fire & Valor. This film\, written and narrated by Rod Gragg\, chronicles the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg\, which was the decisive battle of the American Civil War. \nAt the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1-3\, 1863\, more than 95\,000 Northern troops led by General George Meade engaged in battle with approximately 75\,000 Southern soldiers under the command of General Robert E.
