DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with an installment of the South Carolina Hall of Fame Film Series produced by SCETV\, featuring part two of inductees from the late 20th Century. \nEstablished in 1973\, The South Carolina Hall of Fame\, located in Myrtle Beach\, inducts one deceased and one contemporary honoree each year. It is by law the “official” Hall of Fame for South Carolina. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of slaves from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Marian Calder on Saturday\, September 9th on Peter Horry. Many of us have heard of Francis Marion thanks to the romanticized stories by Parson Weems. But what about the man who served with him and for whom Horry County is named? Join us to learn more about Peter Horry\, his role in the Revolutionary War\, and beyond. \nMarian Calder is the Assistant Director for the Horry County Museum. She received her Bachelor’s degree in History from Coker College in 2007. In 2011\, she began working full time with the Horry County Museum and L.W. Paul Living History Farm. In addition to her membership in various museum organizations\, Calder currently serves on committees for the Palmetto Archives\, Libraries\, and Museums Council on Preservation\, the Waccamaw Market Cooperative Board and the South Carolina Federation of Museums. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on September 16th on vertebrate fossils of the Late Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. He will also discuss ongoing research on a variety of microfossils that can be found in the region. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers\, the National Science Teachers Association\, the National Center for Science Education\, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:The End of the Road Bluegrass Band to perform at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The End of the Road Bluegrass Band on Saturday\, September 30th\, at 1:00 PM. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway\, South Carolina. Formed in 2001\, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches\, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne\, Carolina Blue\, and The Virginia Luthiers. Band members include Joe Hudson on guitar/vocals\, Ron Mew on mandolin/vocals\, Blake Marlowe on banjo/vocals\, Dean Hudson on Bass/vocals\, and Stephanie Sullivan on fiddle. SUMMARY:Grahame Long: Art of the Grave
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Grahame Long on October 21st at 1 PM on the material culture of death in the Carolina Lowcountry. Mourning—sudden or not—was something with which the Charleston community continually dealt throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result\, an array of funerary and mourning goods and services were available. Although likely the saddest of cultural decorations\, these mementos remain among the most communicative aspects of lives long gone. \nAs Director of Museums for Historic Charleston Foundation\, Grahame Long leads all research\, stewardship\, interpretive and education initiatives at the Nathaniel Russell House and Aiken-Rhett House museums and serves as curator for the extensive collections therein. He has authored three books\, published numerous articles and lectured extensively throughout the southeast on various topics concerning material culture\, decorative arts and social histories of South Carolina. \nThe former chief curator for The Charleston Museum\, he is the resident historian for the German Friendly Society\, a member of the Mayor’s Walled City Task Force and an honorary member of the Washington Light Infantry. He is a volunteer curator for The Citadel Archives and Museum and works as a historical consultant for the U.S. Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented by Quilts of Valor members from the Conway Quilt Guild on Saturday\, November 4th at 1 PM.  The quilts to be awarded will be on display in the Museum beginning October 6th. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded over 300\,000 quilts to veterans throughout the country. \nTo nominate a veteran for a Quilt of Valor\, visit www.qovf.org. \nThis program is free and open to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway\, SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays. \nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He became president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades reached far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays fulfilled. Interviewees include Andrew Young\, Hank Aaron\, Mays’ great niece Dr. Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp\, and Dr. Robert Franklin. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, November 15th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2023. DESCRIPTION:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm \nA large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane was gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice was squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 18th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. \nIn 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W.
