SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nEarly every weekday morning\, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island\, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat\, the Prince Washington\, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However\, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact\, they fought to keep it this way. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves\, to the environmentalists\, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 31st\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. For a full list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. \n  \n

SUMMARY:G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV.  The name\, Melvin Horace Purvis\, to many people today\, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name\, and over 260\,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis\, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name\, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day\, including John Dillinger\, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide\, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? Or was there something more sinister behind it? \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, April 21st\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Flora & Fauna of the Carolina Bays
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Carolina Bays in Horry County are the only place in South Carolina you can find Venus Fly Traps growing wild? Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions housing temporary wetlands surrounded by sandy rims. The origin of these dense and marshy depressions have been debated since being brought into the scientific spotlight thanks to aerial photography of the Myrtle Beach area in the 1930s. What isn’t up for debate is the unique and familiar wildlife that call the Carolina Bays home\, including multiple species of carnivorous plants. Stop by the McCown Auditorium at 1 PM on April 24th to learn more about some of the wildlife of the Carolina Bays with Horry County Museum Technical Assistant Abigail Geedy. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. In 2020\, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Uncommon Courage: The D-Day Battle of Graignes. This documentary tells the remarkable story of the little known battle of Graignes described as the “Alamo of D-Day”. SUMMARY:Coastal South Carolina Fish and Game: History\, Culture and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture and book signing for the new publication\, Coastal South Carolina Fish and Game: History\, Culture and Conservation on Saturday\, June 5th at 1:00 PM. Books are available for purchase in the Museum lobby at the front desk or the Farm gift shop. \nFew people are familiar with the full history that shaped and preserved the fish and wildlife of coastal South Carolina.  From Native Americans to the early colonists to plantation owners and the enslaved to market hunters and commercial fishermen\, all viewed fish and wildlife as limitless. Through time\, however\, over-harvesting led to population declines and the public demanded conservation.  The process that produced fish and game laws\, wardens\, and wildlife refuges was complex and often involved conflict\, but synergy and cooperation ultimately produced one of the most extensive conservation systems on the East Coast. Author James O. Luken presents this fascinating story in Coastal South Carolina Fish and Game: History\, Culture and Conservation. \nJames O. Luken is associate dean and professor of biology at Coastal Carolina University. His research\, generally focused on plant ecology and botany\, has ranged from Alaska to Florida. Recent work with students and colleagues attempts to elucidate the mostly unknown natural history of the Venus flytrap and also seeks to quantify the abundant natural capital of coastal ecosystems. He is a frequent consultant on managing working lands within the context of conservation easements. His publications include books\, edited volumes and journal articles\, as well as popular science articles on angling\, travel and plants. Early mornings often find him on the waterways of Horry County in search of opportunities to catch fish. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
