SUMMARY:Carolina Hash: A South Carolina Folk Heritage Tradition
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Carolina Hash: A South Carolina Folk Heritage Tradition. \nHash is only cooked primarily in South Carolina. If you travel across the border into NC or Georgia\, you find that few have ever heard of hash. Filmmaker Stan Woodward discovered this anomaly while researching the difference between Brunswick stews cooked regionally. He gathered footage while shooting the Brunswick stew documentaries that led to this unusual film. Updated with new content that answered questions about the unusual place that mustard had in the barbecue sauce and hash ingredients found in the midlands of South Carolina\, the story of has was enhanced to include the records of French Huguenot writers who wrote of “hashiers”\, which was cooked in Carolina Rice Kitchens by African American artisan cooks who were given poor parts of the hog and told to make an edible concoction that provided a high-protein content for slaves working in the scorching heat. We learn that Hash-cooking migrated inland from plantations to small farms and became commonplace-along with puddin’ and liver mush-as a byproduct foodway cooked as part of the hog-killing that took place in the winter months. Hash today is a common side-dish eaten over rice along with barbecue in South Carolina. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, December 12th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2018. For a full list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

SUMMARY:Don Sweeper: Scrooge According to Gullah
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host “Scrooge According to Gullah” by Donald Sweeper. In this performance\, Mr. Sweeper brings to life the old greedy money miser\, Ebenezer Scrooge\, from Charles Dickens’ novel\, A Christmas Carol.  This reenactment has been adopted for the stage in a Chautauqua performance style in which the audience will interpret Scrooge as someone they personally know\, (maybe in their own family) or have known in the past. \n“Scrooge according to Gullah”\, is portrayed by Donald Sweeper in the rich Gullah tradition. His voice diction and array of Gullah words reveals a tradition that is vanishing as time goes by. Mr. Sweeper was born in Beaufort\, South Carolina\, and grew up in Eutawville. He graduated from Roberts High school in Holly Hill and Voorhees College in Denmark\, SC. He has taught at the elementary\, middle\, and high school levels in both public and private schools in South Carolina.  He has traveled across the width and breathe of the United States reenacting famous African Americans such as Civil War hero and Congressman Robert Smalls. Mr. Sweeper is an authoritarian on the Gullah Culture and its history and teaches Gullah translations and does storytelling for all age groups. He often reads scripture and do interpretations from the New Testament Gullah Bible.  Donald Sweeper is married to his wife Deloris and they have two adult sons and three grandsons.  He currently resides in Columbia\, South Carolina.

SUMMARY:Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, Part I: Cattle Creek and Cypress Camp Meetings.
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, Part I: Cattle Creek and Cypress Camp Meetings. This film explores various primitive religious camp meetings-the earliest founded in the late 1700s by the horseback evangelist\, Bishop Francis Asbury\, along with African American evangelist\, Harry Hosier\, who rode with him to conduct “brush arbor” worship services for white planters and their slaves. In the Dorchester County pine forests of South Carolina these camp-meetings have “tents” built and owned by long-standing extended families from their respective communities. The campgrounds are all located within a 20 mile radius of each other near St. George\, SC. At five different times each year these camp-meetings draw more than 3\,000 congregants from extended families and friends of families nationwide. These congregants stay for a week and are invited to the “tents” of family members\, the worship services\, and to enjoy the Southern home-cooked meals prepared 3-times-a-day on wood stoves in each tent during the seven days of camp-meeting. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 30th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. SUMMARY:Jail\, No Bail
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Jail\, No Bail\, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. On January 31\, 1961\, black students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill\, SC walked into McCrory’s\, sat at the lunch counter\, and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. SUMMARY:Cooking demonstration at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm: Hog Head Cheese
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on February 7th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM for a cooking demonstration on the wood burning stove. When a hog was butchered in the early part of the year\, every effort was made to make as much use of the meat as possible. The head of the pig was often cooked and pressed into a “cheese loaf” or souse meat to be used for breakfast or sandwich meat. Many families would also process the liver into “liver pudding”. Join us to see how both of these dishes would have been prepared. \nA free\, hour long\, guided tour of the Farm will be available to the public at 3:00 PM following the demonstration. \nThe L. W.
