SUMMARY:Farm Harvest Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on January 5th from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM to learn about seasonal produce on the farm. During the winter months\, collard greens were usually available and had their best flavor after a hard freeze. Visitors can join farm staff in the collard patch to learn about this vegetable\, how to harvest it\, and how to prepare it for cooking. \nThe L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. DESCRIPTION:Junior Curators continues at the Horry County Museum on Saturday\, January 12th from 9 AM-10 AM. This free\, family friendly\, program is open to children ages 5 and older and will teach children the history and natural history of Horry County through hands on activities. In this session\, children will learn about the Native Americans who lived here\, the types of tools they used\, and will make a small coil pot to take home. Adults must remain with children. SUMMARY:Discussion on the Homo naledi Fossils at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum will host a discussion by Coastal Carolina Univiersity Anthropology faculty on the Homo naledi (meaning “Star”) fossils discovered in South Africa on Saturday\, January 12th. DESCRIPTION:Visit the L. W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! Winter was the time of year for curing pork on the farm and a season when the family was dependent on home preserved foods during the cold winter months. Join us as staff and volunteers demonstrate how pork was preserved and prepared on the family farm during the early twentieth century in Horry County. Demonstrations will include smoking and salting meat\, making pork sausage\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, making lye soap\, grinding grits\, blacksmithing and more. \nThis free event will be held January 26th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, Part I: Cattle Creek and Cypress Camp Meetings. This film explores various primitive religious camp meetings-the earliest founded in the late 1700s by the horseback evangelist\, Bishop Francis Asbury\, along with African American evangelist\, Harry Hosier\, who rode with him to conduct “brush arbor” worship services for white planters and their slaves. In the Dorchester County pine forests of South Carolina these camp-meetings have “tents” built and owned by long-standing extended families from their respective communities. The campgrounds are all located within a 20 mile radius of each other near St. George\, SC. At five different times each year these camp-meetings draw more than 3\,000 congregants from extended families and friends of families nationwide. These congregants stay for a week and are invited to the “tents” of family members\, the worship services\, and to enjoy the Southern home-cooked meals prepared 3-times-a-day on wood stoves in each tent during the seven days of camp-meeting. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 30th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on March 2nd on vertebrate fossils of the Upper Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers\, the National Science Teachers Association\, the National Center for Science Education\, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located in the Horry County Museum at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.  This event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Jail\, No Bail\, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. On January 31\, 1961\, black students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill\, SC walked into McCrory’s\, sat at the lunch counter\, and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. They were denied service and asked to leave. After refusing to leave\, the students were arrested for trespassing and processed. This 30 minute program pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the ‘Friendship Nine’ sit-in protest that inspired the Jail\, No Bail Movement\, a strategy which turned the tables on the establishment and reinvigorated the National Civil Rights Movement. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 6th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. SUMMARY:Cooking demonstration at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm: Hog Head Cheese
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on February 7th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM for a cooking demonstration on the wood burning stove. When a hog was butchered in the early part of the year\, every effort was made to make as much use of the meat as possible. The head of the pig was often cooked and pressed into a “cheese loaf” or souse meat to be used for breakfast or sandwich meat. Many families would also process the liver into “liver pudding”. Join us to see how both of these dishes would have been prepared. \nA free\, hour long\, guided tour of the Farm will be available to the public at 3:00 PM following the demonstration. \nThe L. W. The Waccamaw Conference is an opportunity to increase community involvement in the protection and appreciation of the rivers and coasts that we all depend on. This year’s theme is The Journey of Trash: Pollution to Solution\, highlighting common sources and impacts of trash in waterways throughout the Winyah Bay Watershed and what you can do to help. Understanding the journey of trash from land-based sources all the way to the ocean helps communities better protect our local waterways to ensure fishable\, swimmable\, drinkable water for our future. \nThe 2019 Waccamaw Conference will feature presentations\, interactive exhibits\, and a student poster contest. Held at the Horry County Museum\, the Conference also presents an opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibits displaying the history of our watershed. \nOur speaker this year is Dr. Stefanie Whitmire of the Clemson Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science. Dr. Whitmire will discuss her research on microplastics on the South Carolina coast in her talk. We will also be hosting “Let’s Get Trashy: Discussing the Journey of Trash with the Experts\,” a panel discussion with local experts including Kelly Thorvalson\, S.C. Aquarium Sea Turtle Hospital; Ranger Mike Walker\, Huntington Beach State Park; Michelle LaRocco\, Georgetown County Environmental Services Division; Michael Hughes\, Horry County Solid Waste Authority; and Bo Ives\, Keep Horry County Beautiful. \nStudents (K – 12th grade and post-secondary) will be participating in a poster contest that will showcase the work of individuals or groups within the categories of science and art. DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, Part II: Saint Paul. This film explores various primitive religious camp meetings-the earliest founded in the late 1700s by the horseback evangelist\, Bishop Francis Asbury\, along with African American evangelist\, Harry Hosier\, who rode with him to conduct “brush arbor” worship services for white planters and their slaves. In the Dorchester County pine forests of South Carolina these camp-meetings have “tents” built and owned by long-standing extended families from their respective communities. The campgrounds are all located within a 20 mile radius of each other near St. George\, SC. At five different times each year these camp-meetings draw more than 3\,000 congregants from extended families and friends of families nationwide. These congregants stay for a week and are invited to the “tents” of family members\, the worship services\, and to enjoy the Southern home-cooked meals prepared 3-times-a-day on wood stoves in each tent during the seven days of camp-meeting. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 13th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a program by Frank Hubbell on Saturday\, February 16th\, on “the inside story of the outhouse”. \nSince 1992\, Frank Hubbell has travelled throughout Indiana\, Illinois and Iowa\, sharing his collection of outhouse photographs and memorabilia. The program includes a brief reading from Charles “Chic” Sales’ 1929 humor book\, The Specialist\, which provides the fine points of putting up a proper “necessary house.” Hubbell will also share a collection of slides\, inherited from his father\, who in his retirement traveled around the country on two lane roads and photographed any outhouse he could find. The audience will be encouraged to share their outhouse stories and can also view a display of miniatures and other memorabilia provided by Mr. Hubbell. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:The 25th Annual Horry County Museum Quilt Gala
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum Quilt Gala has become a fixture on the Grand Strand.  Started in 1994\, the first Gala was held on the lawn of the Horry County Courthouse.  Over the years the Gala has continued to grow and is now held at the Ocean Lakes Family Campground Recreation Center in Myrtle Beach. \nMany different types of quilts are displayed at the Gala which represent a variety of techniques and skill levels. Categories include large quilts\, medium quilts\, small quilts\, and a challenge quilt. The challenge category changes each year and is based on preset restrictions. The 2019 challenge theme is “Starstruck”. Quilters in this category are challenged to create a wall hanging that includes at least one recognizable eight-pointed star using any color palette or technique that they like. \nWinners from each category will be voted on by the public and will receive a ribbon. The blue ribbon winners from each category will be displayed in the Horry County Museum during the month of March. \nIn addition to displaying quilts\, the Gala also hosts demonstrators\, speakers\, and a featured quilter\, Pat Sprecher. Local and regional vendors will also be on hand to support\, consult\, and aid the quilter with various quilting products. \nThe Museum is grateful to have the support of local quilt guilds for many years to aid in the management\, set-up\, and break down of the Gala. \nThe 25th Annual Quilt Gala will be held Friday\, February 22nd and Saturday\, February 23rd from 10 am-4 pm. DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV documentary\, Charlie’s Place. This film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club.
