SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Native American Oral Traditions and Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 7th at 1 PM as Abigail Geedy discusses the ways that people\, places\, and objects influenced one another in South Carolina. Multi-mound Mississippian Era Native American sites have been documented in central South Carolina. A portion of the people who lived there were likely ancestrally related to the peoples of the Catawba Indian Nation\, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians\, and Creek (Muscogee) Nation. Using documented oral traditions and the collaboration of current members of these three Nations\, we can interpret the meaning behind the natural and built landscape of these sites and the artifacts commonly found there. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. She has just recently joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation will offer a lecture and book signing for the new publication\, Sandy Island…forever: A Collaboration of Essays & Images on Saturday\, November 14th at 1:00 PM. \nSandy Island…forever includes a general history of the island’s plantations researched and written by Susan Hoffer McMillan with vintage and current photographs\, the role of the Huntingtons of Brookgreen Gardens by Robin R. Salmon with vintage photographs\, Vennie Deas Moore’s snapshot of Sandy Island in 1997\, and Virginia and Dana Beach’s recounting of the conservation efforts that culminated successfully that same year. The concluding chapter is a pictorial natural history tour of the island\, with original images by Anne Swift Malarich and other photographers\, illustrating all that has been preserved. Books will be available after the program for purchase. \nSandy Island … forever is also available at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum\, Brookgreen Gardens’ Keepsakes\, Art Works in the Litchfield Exchange\, Litchfield Books\, The Original Hammock Shop\, My Sisters Books\, and the Rice Museum. DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Back to the Battlefield: Remembering D-Day. This locally produced film follows the late Mike Fitch of Conway\, an 89-year-old D-Day veteran\, as he returned to Omaha Beach in France for the first time since landing as an American combat soldier on June 6\, 1944. Attached to the 116th Regimental Combat Team on D-Day\, Fitch landed in the second wave of American troops on Charlie Sector\, which was one of “Bloody Omaha’s” deadliest landing sites. \nShot on location in France\, Back to the Battlefield leads the viewer through the beaches\, battlefields\, hedgerows\, and villages of modern Normandy. Enhanced by historic newsreel footage\, the one-hour documentary chronicles the dramatic story of D-Day as retold on-the-scene by Fitch\, a World War II combat veteran whose vivid memories give viewers a unique you-are-there exposure to the world-changing events of D-Day. SUMMARY:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:A large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane would be gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice could be squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 21st from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including blacksmithing\, cooking on a wood-burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series begins with War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. This film tells the story of three American pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force during World War I. The film chronicles the exploits of John Grider\, Elliott White Springs\, and Larry Callahan\, all known as the “Three Musketeers”. War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator was originally published after World War I and became a bestseller. It was assumed that the diary was written and kept by Grider\, the only member of the trio to be killed in action. However\, it was later discovered in 1959 that Springs\, who later became president of Spring Cotton Mills\, Inc. and founder of Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, wrote and published the work in memory of his friend and other pilots who had died in the war. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 6th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Southern Stews: A Taste of the South.  \nThe traditions of cooking communal stews in huge black iron pots stirred with wooden paddles have long been a way of Southern gatherings-whether at hunt clubs\, church or family reunions\, during holidays\, or special events such as commemorating the end of harvests or to feed workers helping out at hog-killing time. These stews required a number of workers\, with a division of labor usually split between women who would prepare vegetables for the stews and men working in shifts under a stew-master to constantly stir the stew for up to 18 hours before serving. DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Barbecue & Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile. This documentary was made to promote folklore and folklife experiences visitors might have in the economically depressed four-counties of the Region III SC National Heritage Corridor. These counties bear primary roots to the beginnings and growth of barbecue in South Carolina. This film explores eateries where the cooks heading up the kitchens or barbecue pits have agrarian family roots and were first taught on wood stoves or by the side of heralded barbecue pit-men. They maintain today’s recipes with ingredients and cooking methods learned at the side of mothers\, fathers\, aunts\, uncles or grandparents in these farming communities. SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on January 30th on vertebrate fossils of the Upper Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers\, the National Science Teachers Association\, the National Center for Science Education\, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located in the Horry County Museum at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.  This event is free and open to the public. \nFor more information call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.
