SUMMARY:Joe Long: Privateering Along the SC Coast
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Joe Long on Privateers of the South Carolina Coast on October 19th at 1:00 PM. \nAmerican privateering history is often associated with New England\, but Charleston was an important center of privateering and had some unique aspects to its swashbuckling story. Privateering could be a profitable venture for a bold captain. It also constituted an important strategy for our young Republic. Join us as Joe Long discusses Charleston-based privateers in the American Revolution\, in the War of 1812\, and in-between. Long will also examine the Charleston-based privateers in their strategic context as well as relating anecdotes from their adventures and misadventures. \nJoe Long is the Curator of Education for the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum\, where he has worked since 2002.  He holds an MA in History from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville\, Georgia\, and has been published in Civil War Historian magazine\, the Journal of the South Carolina Historical Society\, and elsewhere; he has also appeared on the television shows “History Detectives”\, “Carolina Stories” and the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum”.  Joe has written or co-written several of the Confederate Relic Room’s exhibits\, including “Through Fiery Trials: Religion in Civil War South Carolina”\, and “Paths of Destruction: Sherman’s Final Campaign”. He is currently working on a biography of General Maxcey Gregg.  Joe lives with his wife and small horde of children in Cayce\, SC; his oldest son is a rising junior at The Citadel. \nThe program will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. The view a full list of scheduled programs for 2017\, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor display and presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for 19 local veterans will be on display at the Museum October 8th through the 25th. A presentation of the quilts to veterans will take place October 26th in the Museum’s auditorium at 1:00 pm at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. After six years\, the foundation decided to award a quilt to any veteran who served during wartime era\, from WWII to present. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded 216\,471 quilts. \nFor more information about this program\, contact the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Cooking demonstration at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on November 7th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM for a cooking demonstration on the wood burning stove. White tail deer have not always been as abundant in Horry County as they are today. SUMMARY:Barbecue and Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Barbecue and Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile. This documentary was made to promote folklore and folklife experiences visitors might have in the economically depressed four-counties of the Region III SC National Heritage Corridor. These counties bear primary roots to the beginnings and growth of barbecue in South Carolina. This film explores eateries where the cooks heading up the kitchens or barbecue pits have agrarian family roots and were first taught on wood stoves or by the side of heralded barbecue pit-men. They maintain today recipes with ingredients and cooking methods learned at the side of mothers\, fathers\, aunts\, uncles or grandparents in these farming communities. Music by South Carolina roots musicians move the viewer along as they hit the road with filmmaker Stan Woodward and the folklorist from McKissick Museum as they ‘root-out’ these sites. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, November 27th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019.
