SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nEarly every weekday morning\, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island\, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat\, the Prince Washington\, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However\, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact\, they fought to keep it this way. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. SUMMARY:Virginia Ellison: What’s in Your Attic?
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Virginia Ellison at 1:00 PM on January 28th. Ellison will discuss the benefits and procedures of donating materials to an archives or museum\, how to navigate the donation process\, including which questions to ask and what factors to consider when donating a family heirloom\, and basic preservation that you can do at home. \nVirginia Ellison is the VP of Collections and COO of the South Carolina Historical Society where she oversees all archival and museum operations. She attended the College of Charleston\, where she earned a BS in anthropology and then received her MLIS from the University of South Carolina in 2011. She attended the Georgia Archives Institute in June 2012\, and received her certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists in 2016. Virginia is past president of the Charleston Archives\, Libraries & Museums Council (CALM) and serves as a District Representative for the Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies (CSCLHS). DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV film The Education of Harvey Gantt. \nSouth Carolina fought the desegregation of its schools longer than any other state\, even after the passage of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. SUMMARY:Carin Bloom: Not the Most Unhappy of All Creation
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a first person historical interpretation on Catherine Greene by Carin Bloom on February 4th at 1 PM.  Towards the end of the American War for Independence\, Catharine Littlefield Greene takes one more trip to accompany her husband to the front lines of war. Destined for the Continental Army’s camp above the Ashley River\, just outside Charleston\, Caty makes her way South with one of Nathanael Greene’s letters to her in hand. Still\, despite his best efforts to forewarn her\, Nathanael is unsuccessful in preparing his wife for the desolation and destruction she will see – the worst yet – as the war comes to its conclusion. The year is 1782\, Caty is headed to an exhausted\, sick army encampment with a new wardrobe and a military escort – and she’s worried about exactly what she will find… \nCarin Bloom is the Manager of Education and Programming at Historic Charleston Foundation in Charleston\, SC. Carin holds an Honors BA\, two MAs\, and a PhD ABD in Anthropology\, all with specializations in Historical Archaeology (specifically Fields of Conflict of the American Revolution). She is an archaeologist and living historian by training\, specializing in the public history of the 18th century in America. Carin focuses on lesser-known historical figures; those whose stories have not yet been told extensively still made important contributions. To that end\, Carin presents as Catharine Littlefield Greene\, wife of General Nathanael Greene of the United States Army. Caty’s story inserts much-needed women’s history into the story of the American War for Independence\, as well as brings to light some of the harsh realities of the conflict that are often left out in favor of the triumph and tragedy of great battles won and lost. A native of Georgetown\, SC\, Hemingway’s Gullah Geechee roots extend along the entire coast of South Carolina from Horry to Beaufort counties and includes a long line of civic\, business\, education and political family engagement. She was recognized by the Post and Courier as “2020 12 African American Leaders to know in South Carolina”\, is a recipient of the SC African American Heritage Commission 2021 Herbert A. SUMMARY:Featured Quilter Jill Messier
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us Tuesday March 7th at 11 AM as local quilter and textile artist Jill Messier shares some of her unique creations. \nJill Messier moved to Conway from Enfield\, Connecticut four years ago and arrived two days before Hurricane Florence. She began quilting in the 1970s after visiting a neighbor who quilts. Messier used the book Lap Quilting by Georgie Bonesteel to create a quilt in the Grandmother’s Fan pattern. After preparing and sewing the quilt by hand\, Messier soon found that she had a new hobby. She has currently finished 97 quilts ranging in size from baby to king\, with all but 2 being quilted by hand. Many quilts have been kept or gifted to friends and family\, while some have won ribbons at shows. Messier is currently working on 6 different quilts. She also likes to use leftover material to create other items\, such as origami butterflies\, wallets\, cozies\, iPad covers and purses. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Discovering Dave\, Spirit Captured in Clay. Directed and produced by George Wingard and Mark Albertin and released through the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and Scrapbook Video\, this film tells the story of David Drake\, a slave potter from Edgefield\, South Carolina. David was one of the first African American slaves to sign many of his works\, which included jars and pitchers. SUMMARY:To Finish or Not To Finish…That is the Question
DESCRIPTION:Have you wondered what to do with the odd\, orphan blocks you have collected or been given as family heirlooms? Do you have vintage or antique quilt tops that you just don’t know what to do with? How should these collectibles be finished? Or should they even be finished? Brenda Grampsas\, American Quilter’s Society Certified Quilt Appraiser will be giving tips on March 14th at 11 AM at the Horry County Museum on what to do with these collectibles. She will also show quilts she has made from such blocks and quilt tops. \nBrenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens. Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts. Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service.
