It is by law the “official” Hall of Fame for South Carolina. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Agrarian Folklore & Folk Remedies
DESCRIPTION:Rural farming communities have long been places with people who lived and worked closely with the land for their daily survival. Folklore springs from this in ways such as knowing if the ‘signs’ are right for certain crops or other farm activities\, a concept that drives much of the information in the widely used Farmer’s Almanac to this day. Agrarian communities were also often distant from doctors\, or couldn’t afford to see one regularly. This encouraged folk remedies using mostly ingredients you could find on the average farm\, as well as community Faith Healers. Join us on September 18th at 1 pm to learn more about local agrarian folklore and folk remedies with Horry County Museum Technical Assistant Abigail Geedy. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. In 2020\, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by Dr. Jeffrey Camper on Saturday\, October 16th. Using photographs and live specimens\, Dr. Camper will discuss the different snake species that are found throughout South Carolina. \nJeffrey Camper was born in Aurora\, IL and began catching garter snakes at seven years old. He received a BS in Zoology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale\, an MA in Biology from Drake University\, and a Ph.D. in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University. Dr. Camper has been teaching genetics\, evolutionary biology\, comparative anatomy & herpetology at Francis Marion University since 1994. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program on October 23rd by local author Sherman Carmichael on eerie stories from South Carolina’s past. \nSherman Carmichael has been interested in ghosts\, UFO’s and other strange things since an early age. Many of the stories he wrote throughout his school years were on the strange and unknown. At the age of 16 he subscribed to Fate Magazine and that led him to start investigating the paranormal. Carmichael has visited many sites with a haunted history. In his early years he wrote many stories on South Carolina ghosts for several newspapers. With hundreds of folders of research Carmichael decided to write a book. In March 2011 Forgotten Tales of South Carolina was published by The History Press in Charleston\, S.C. Other books by Carmichael include Legends & Lore of South Carolina\, Mysterious Tales of Western North Carolina\, Mysterious Georgia\, Mysterious South Carolina\, and Eerie South Carolina \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. Visitors can try their hand at shelling corn and learn about the different ways that corn would be cooked in the farmhouse. Bring the kids by to make toys out of corn cobs and corn husks too! SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on November 6th on a new\, rare Early Paleocene vertebrate fossil locality in the Pee Dee Region.  Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology (with Honors and Distinction) from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy for 7 and ½ years\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught middle and high school science for 29 years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Center for Science Education\, the South Carolina Science Council\, and the South Carolina Education Association (Retired). He is also an Advanced Placement Advocate for the College Board.  In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Geological Society of America\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located in the Horry County Museum at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.  This event is free and open to the public. \nFor more information call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:A large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane would be gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice could be squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 20th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public.
