DESCRIPTION:Brenda Grampsas\, Certified Quilt Appraiser asks\, “Don’t you just love all the cute items purchased and made for a new baby in your family or circle of friends?”  One of the reasons baby showers are so fun is the wonderful gift items we all ooh and ah over. Baby & children’s quilts often give us a warm\, fuzzy feeling and this trunk show features many vintage/antique quilts and coverlets from Brenda’s personal collection that do just that. Join us on March 24th at 1 PM for a trip down memory lane. You may be inspired to make your next baby or child’s gift a quilt. \nBrenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser\, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service. In this session\, SCELP Executive Director Amy Armstrong will talk about how this landmark law became a crucial legal tool to address water pollution and destruction across the county\, including our very own Waccamaw River. However\, 50 years after the inception of the Clean Water Act\, our lakes\, rivers and wetlands remain under threat due to legislative rollbacks\, unrelenting development interests and climate change. Learn how you can take action to protect your waters and your community. \nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY \nAmy Armstrong is the Executive Director of the South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP)\, a nonprofit environmental law organization. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Fallen Heroes\, part of the Carolina Stories Series from ETV. This 30 minute film features the World War II stories of William Farrow and Thomas Dry Howie. William Farrow was one of 80 airmen who volunteered to fly 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers in the Doolittle Raid\, taking off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier\, bombing Japan\, and then landing in China. Thomas Dry Howie was given command of the 3rd Battalion and sent to take the pivotal town of Saint-Lo in the Battle of Normandy. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, April 13th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2022. SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. In 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W. SUMMARY:Chris Boyle-Lowcountry Agricultural & Convivial Societies.
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author and historian Christopher Boyle on Saturday\, April 23rd\, on his new book Lowcountry Agricultural and Convivial Societies \n“Throughout the first century of South Carolina’s settlement\, rice was an important crop but the rice industry did not experience its first boom until the 1720s and 1730s. This book explores the purpose of the social organizations as well as the moral\, economic\, cultural\, and political challenges of the Antebellum Georgetown rice planters. Within the protected confines of their organizations\, planters felt safe discussing local and national politics\, advancements to their educational system\, and agricultural and livestock improvements to better compete with the Industrial North. The alliance of “brothers of the soil” helped solidify South Carolina’s Lowcountry politically. The agricultural alliances of the region promoted Southern Nationalism and provided one pillar for Southerners to the American Civil War.” \nChristopher C. Boyle is the international baccalaureate history teacher at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, and a part-time teaching associate at Coastal Carolina University in Conway. Upon graduation from Coastal Carolina University with his bachelor’s degree in history\, he further studied history at Winthrop University where he graduated in 1996 with his Master of Arts degree in American history. In addition to having written numerous articles for scholarly journals\, Boyle is the author of Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River and The Road to Secession in Antebellum Georgetown & Horry Districts.  \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. In 1719\, the elected representatives of the Province of Carolina requested the protection of the British Crown.  Over the first fifty years of the colony’s existence\, the Lords Proprietors\, the owners of the colony\, had struggled with the colonists over economic and political control of the settlement.  Internal squabbles and external dangers that threatened the colony led the settlers to rebel against the proprietors and ask the King to take over control of Carolina.  This step would set the province on a new path towards self-determination and the idea that political power is derived from the people. \nPatrick McCawley has been with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History since 1986.  Patrick spent the first 21 years with the department as archivist with Reference Services branch\, where he handled research queries dealing with the Civil War and other SC military related events.   In 2007\, he became the Accessions Archivist and supervisor of the Archival Processing Unit.  In 2018\, he was also given responsibility for the agency’s Records Management Unit and State Record Center which holds long term non-current\, non-archival records. \nPatrick has authored several publications for the department including a Guide to Civil War Records: A Guide to the Records in the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and The Many Faces of Slavery\, a documentary reader on slave life in South Carolina.  He has curated several exhibits for the agency including “’To preserve us from utter ruine’: The Revolution of 1719.”  Born and raised in Maryland\, just outside of Washington\, DC\, Patrick received his BA degree in American History from the University of Maryland and attended the Applied History program at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  He lives in Chapin\, SC. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. SUMMARY:Eric Crawford: Gullah Spirituals
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by musicologist Eric Crawford on May 7th on his book\, Gullah Spirituals: The Sound of Freedom & Protest in the South Carolina Sea Islands. \nJoin us to learn the history of Gullah Geechee songs from their beginnings in West Africa to their height as songs for social change and Black identity in the twentieth century American South. While much has been done to study\, preserve\, and interpret Gullah culture in the lowcountry and sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia\, some traditions like the shouting and rowing songs have been all but forgotten. This work\, which focuses primarily on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island\, illuminates the remarkable history\, survival\, and influence of spirituals since the earliest recordings in the 1860s. \nEric Sean Crawford is the director of the Benedict College Honors Program and holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the Catholic University of America. He is the former director of the Charles W. Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies at Coastal Carolina University\, served as musical consultant for the Amazon series Underground Railroad\, and is featured in Henry Louis Gates’s miniseries\, The Black Church. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:“Fielding Freed: The Things They Carried: Grunt Gear of the Vietnam War” \n  \nThe Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Fielding Freed on Saturday\, May 21st\, on grunt gear of the Vietnam War. \nA grunt once said that with all the gear on his back he felt like a turtle and moved about as quickly. This hands-on program will show some of the gear used and carried by soldiers and Marines during the Vietnam War.  Understanding some of the physical demands of jungle warfare starts with the equipment carried by our troops. Historian Fielding Freed will show and discuss original examples including rations\, field gear\, headgear\, uniforms\, and the all-important back pack radio used during Vietnam. Veterans and their families are encouraged to attend. \nFielding Freed is Director of Historic House Museums for Historic Columbia. A Native of Chattanooga\, Fielding has worked in the museum field nearly twenty years. After a five year stint as a photojournalist\, he earned an MS in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Museum Studies Certificate from the Milwaukee Public Museum. His recent work includes serving as part of the reinterpretation team for the Woodrow Wilson Family Home and Museum of Reconstruction. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV documentary\, Charlie’s Place. This 30 minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club.
