SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves\, to the environmentalists\, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, April 30th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. SUMMARY:War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. This film tells the story of three American pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force during World War I. SUMMARY:Alan Todd to speak on Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Alan Todd\, Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project\, on Saturday\, June 14th\, at 1:00 PM. Horry County is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country\, which has led to unprecedented construction and demolition. As older structures are rapidly demolished and cleared for new construction\, the local area’s inherently valuable used building materials\, structural histories\, and expert trade skills are unnecessarily lost to the landfill. In contrast\, the economic model of deconstruction provides a ready solution to this unnecessary waste and loss. Deconstruction is the careful disassembly of structures\, an alternative to traditional demolition. In this process\, building materials can be salvaged and reused\, histories researched and archived\, and traditional skills revived for future generations. Alan Todd will discuss the process of establishing a deconstruction industry in our area and the environmental and economic benefits it brings.\nAlan Todd is Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project\, a nonprofit organization that focuses on building material reuse and trades preservation. A professor at Coastal Carolina University and trained archaeologist\, Alan’s life’s work culminates in saving old-growth lumber from landfills\, archiving the histories of family homes\, and reviving traditional building crafts through education and community development.\nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. To view a full list of scheduled programs\, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of those enslaved from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today.\nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 18th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.\nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. SUMMARY:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Uncommon Folk
DESCRIPTION:There are some artists that fall outside of the definition of fine art. Sometimes referred to as folk\, outsider\, visionary or memory artists\, most are driven to create something that has a special meaning to them. Some use objects from their own backyard\, or illustrate personal visions or cultural history\, while others use art to cope with life. Some are celebrated locally\, while the work of others goes unseen until their deaths. One thing they have in common is that they are destined to leave their impression on this world through their work. This film takes a look at some of South Carolina’s unique self-taught artists including Maxi McConnell Eades\, Reverend Johnnie Simmons\, L.C. Carson\, Sam Doyle\, Ernest Lee\, and Margaret Robbins.\nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 25th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.\nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025.
