SUMMARY:Farm Animal Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on April 27th from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM to learn about the different animals on the farm and their various roles. \nThe public is invited to help feed the animals from 9:00-9:30. Visitors can select an ear of corn\, shell it\, and use it to feed the chickens. This month farm staff will demonstrate trimming a mule’s mane and tail to help the animal stay clean and cool when the weather starts getting hot. \nThe L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. What began as a short\, 10 minute film about grits turned into a 45 minute documentary that launched the filmmaking career of South Carolinian Stan Woodward. Since its release in 1980\, It’s Grits has won multiple awards at film festivals\, and appeared nationally on PBS. DESCRIPTION:The 2019 CCU & OLLI Film Series begins with the locally produced film Gettysburg: On Fields of Fire & Valor on April 13th at 1:00 PM. Produced and narrated by historian Rod Gragg\, this film chronicles the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg\, which was the decisive battle of the American Civil War. At the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1-3\, 1863\, more than 95\,000 Northern troops led by General George Meade engaged in battle with approximately 75\,000 Southern soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee.  Meade’s Army of the Potomac was defeated by Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia on the battle’s opening day\, but held off Lee’s attacks for the next two days\, and the battle ended in a major Northern victory. Lee’s army was forced to retreat back to Virginia\, and although bloody warfare continued for two more years\, the Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War. \n“Gettysburg was the largest battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere\,” says historian Rod Gragg\, the documentary’s producer. “It’s a dramatic and moving story – both tragic and inspiring – and today it remains an unforgettable example of American courage and sacrifice.”  Gettysburg: On Fields of Fire and Valor was originally produced for the annual Veterans Day event – “Salute to American Veterans” – under the sponsorship of Goldfinch Funeral Home\, Coastal Carolina University\, HTC and Joey Sanders Dentistry of Conway.  It was filmed on location at Gettysburg National Military Park and other historic sites. \nThis program is free to the public and will be held in the McCown Auditorium at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:Joy Brown: The Nature Conservancy in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by Joy Brown on Saturday\, March 30th\, on the work of the Nature Conservancy’s Living Shoreline work and the North Coast Resilience Project. \nCoastal communities in the Carolinas are experiencing an increasing frequency of flood events from rainfall\, storm surge\, and tidal events. There is growing interest in the solutions nature and natural infrastructure have to offer for flood mitigation\, and The Nature Conservancy is working at the local to federal scale to increase resilience to flood risk through nature based solutions. \nThis session will highlight TNC’s coastal resilience initiatives\, including their work in Horry & Georgetown Counties to identify and implement on the ground projects and the living shoreline reefs installed in South Carolina. \nJoy earned a BS in Biological Sciences from Florida State University and a Master’s in Biology and Coastal Zone Studies from The University of West Florida in 2007. A native of the Florida Panhandle\, Joy worked with a small non-profit group\, The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance\, for five years\, where she helped grow the organization and implement many of their marine and stormwater programs. She also held a position with the City of Fort Walton Beach where she began an oyster restoration program that utilized local volunteers for oyster gardening and included a science teacher mentoring element. \nJoy joined the Science and Stewardship staff of the Charleston Field office in August 2008. Since joining the team\, Joy has implemented on-the-ground oyster restoration projects that provide habitat for recreationally and commercially important seafood (crabs\, shrimp\, fish) and natural shoreline stabilization (living shorelines). She has worked with partners in new and different ways\, bringing attention to our marine work from diverse groups. Joy has been leading our North Coast Resilience Project that started in 2016. She is working with communities in Horry and Georgetown Counties to provide nature based solutions for flood mitigation. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. Join us for Sawmill Saturday from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM on March 30th to see the sawmill in operation. There were\, and still are\, a lot of trees being grown in Horry County for timber production. In the early twentieth century\, most communities had a sawmill in the area to get the trees from their forest turned into boards. Farm staff and designated volunteers will operate the sawmill and discuss its set-up after it was moved to the farm. \nThe L. W. SUMMARY:The People Who Take up Serpents
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the film\, The People Who Take up Serpents. A classic documentary shot in 1974 when Stan Woodward served as Filmmaker in residence at the South Carolina Arts Commission. He headed a groundbreaking program that funded SC filmmakers making their own personal works. Gretchen Robinson’s film on the story of the members of the Holiness Church of God in Jesus’ Name in Greenville\, SC-a snake handling church-tells the story of how they responded after a sister church in Newport\, Tennessee was padlocked by order of the State Attorney General after two preachers had died from strychnine while trying to prove the authenticity of their faith. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 27th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2019. SUMMARY:Farm Animal Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on March 23rd from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM to learn about the different animals on the farm and their various roles. \nThe public is invited to help feed the animals from 9:00-9:30. Visitors can select an ear of corn\, shell it\, and use it to feed the chickens. This month farm staff will talk about the importance of farm animal waste and how it can be used to increase soil fertility. \nThe L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the film\, Swamp Fox: Francis Marion & the American Revolution. Join us as we discuss some interesting moments in Horry County’s history including Confederate deserters raiding local farms\, an abandoned community on the Waccamaw River\, and a suspected murderer calling down the wrath of God on his accusers. SUMMARY:Christopher Boyle: The Road to Secession in Antebellum Georgetown and Horry Districts
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author and historian Christopher Boyle on Saturday\, March 9th\, on his book The Road to Secession in Antebellum Georgetown and Horry Districts. \n“The road to secession in antebellum Georgetown and Horry districts was long. Through the use of newspapers and public lectures\, local leaders unified their communities against the Second Great Awakening reforms\, industrialization\, corporate model banks and abolition. The leading statesmen cast a bond of allegiance with the yeoman farmers of the pine forests against slave emancipation and changing economic models to forge Southern Nationalism. Planters and farmers joined forces in the struggle to maintain their agricultural traditions and their sense of identity in a rapidly changing world. Plantation historian Christopher Boyle explores the beginning of a critical era in Horry and Georgetown.” \nChristopher C. Boyle is a full-time social studies teacher at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, and a part-time teaching associate at Coastal Carolina University in Conway. Upon graduation from Coastal Carolina University with his bachelor’s degree in history\, he further studied history at Winthrop University where he graduated in 1996 with his Master of Arts degree in American history. Boyle is the author of Mansfield Plantation: A Legacy on the Black River. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on March 7th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM for a cooking demonstration on the wood burning stove. Creativity was needed when the family wanted to get away from everyday recipes and add variety to their meals. In this demonstration\, Wayne will use foods from the pantry to cook a small meal that would have been different for the average family. \nA free\, hour long\, guided tour of the Farm will be available to the public at 3:00 PM following the demonstration. \nThe L.
