SUMMARY:When Rice Was King.
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of slaves from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. Its passing\, along with that of the grand cotton plantations\, ended a way of life. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 2nd\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2022. For a list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

SUMMARY:Rubba Dub Dub: Does Your Quilt Belong in the Tub?
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us on March 1st at 1 PM as Certified Quilt Appraiser Brenda Grampsas answers questions about the care and storage of quilts. Grampsas will present methods of treating stains and laundering quilts that have worked for her and her clients for years. Questions are welcome! \nBrenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser\, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service. More information can be found on Brenda’s website   www.thimbletales.com. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 PM at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Gullah Geechee Community Day
DESCRIPTION:Gullah Geechee Community Day highlights the significance of Gullah Geechee cultures and the wider African diaspora to both Horry and Georgetown counties. “Gullah Geechee” refers to the descendants of enslaved individuals\, predominantly from West Africa\, who retained many of their African traditions and cultures because of the relative isolation of their plantations from the rest of the world. Gullah Geechee traditions have informed most of what we know today as Lowcountry culture and cuisine from Hoppin’ John to Calabash Seafood. \nThis festival is the last day of an international conference that concentrates on Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora (IGGAD)\, hosted by the Joyner Institute Gullah Institute at Coastal Carolina University\, filled with presentations\, readings\, and performances. This year’s theme is Who Owns This? Communities\, Preservation\, and Heritage. This year\, to be as accessible as possible\, events will be livestreamed. Select events will be live-streamed to our social media\, but for an all-access pass\, please purchase a virtual registration. To learn more\, register\, or buy tickets to exclusive events\, visit http://gullahgeecheeday.com/

SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: The Archaeology of Civil War Naval Operations and Shipwrecks in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:A rich and important maritime archeological heritage reflecting Union and Confederate naval endeavors during the Civil War resides in the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina. Union naval strategy during the war evolved from simply blockading Confederate ports to launching offensive naval actions and acting in concert with land forces in combined operations to bring the battle to the Confederacy.  The Confederate naval strategy for the most part was defensive in nature\, to defend their ports and keep them open for blockade runners and to launch an occasional strike at the Union blockading fleet.  This illustrated presentation will discuss the naval strategies used by both sides of the conflict and interweave the shipwrecks\, including Federal and Confederate ironclads\, warships\, a submarine\, and blockade runners\, that represent these various operations in the waterways of South Carolina. \nJames Spirek\, the State Underwater Archaeologist for South Carolina\, works at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina\, Columbia.  Employed there since 1996 and holding his current position since 2012\, Jim’s responsibilities include managing and studying the maritime archaeological legacy residing in the lakes\, rivers\, and coastal waters of South Carolina.  Jim has participated in numerous projects documenting a diverse range of sunken prehistoric and historic watercraft\, Colonial and Native American sites\, Civil War warships and blockade runners\, and other underwater archaeological remains in state waters.  He is co-editor of Submerged Cultural Resource Management: Preserving and Interpreting Our Sunken Maritime Heritage\, and a co-contributor to Archaeology in South Carolina: Exploring the Hidden Heritage of the Palmetto State\, Florida’s Lost Galleon: The Emanuel Point Shipwreck\, and Guns of the Pee Dee: The Cannon Recovery.  Jim received his B.A. in History from George Mason University in 1987 and his M.A. in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University in 1993. \nThe program will be held on February 5th at 1 PM in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. SUMMARY:Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods\, Recipes\, & Their Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Kevin Mitchell on his book\, Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods\, Recipes\, & Their Stories on Saturday\, January 8th at 1:00 PM. \nIn Taste the State\, Chef Kevin Mitchell and historian David S. Shields present engaging profiles of eighty-two of the state’s most distinctive ingredients\, such as Carolina Gold rice\, Sea Island White Flint corn\, and the cone-shaped Charleston Wakefield cabbage\, and signature dishes\, such as shrimp and grits\, chicken bog\, okra soup\, Frogmore stew\, and crab rice. These portraits\, illustrated with original photographs and historical drawings\, provide origin stories and tales of kitchen creativity and agricultural innovation; historical “receipts” and modern recipes\, including Chef Mitchell’s distillation of traditions in Hoppin’ John fritters\, okra and crab stew\, and more. \nBecause Carolina cookery combines ingredients and cooking techniques of three greatly divergent cultural traditions\, there is more than a little novelty and variety in the food. Taste the State celebrates the contributions of Native Americans (hominy grits\, squashes\, and beans)\, the Gullah Geechee (field peas\, okra\, guinea squash\, rice\, and sorghum)\, and European settlers (garden vegetables\, grains\, pigs\, and cattle) in the mixture of ingredients and techniques that would become Carolina cooking. Taste the State also explores the specialties of every region—the famous rice and seafood dishes of the Lowcountry; the Pee Dee’s catfish and pinebark stews; the smothered cabbage\, pumpkin chips\, and mustard-based barbecue of the Dutch Fork and Orangeburg; the red chicken stew of the Midlands; and the chestnuts\, chinquapins\, and corn bread recipes of mountain Upstate.

SUMMARY:Museum Matinee: Mister Hawg-A Hash Opera
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Mister Hawg: A Hash Opera. After recovering from a stroke that appeared to have ended his career\, Stan Woodward recovered to complete the editing of Mister Hawg-a film that had been shot in 2003 but had never been edited. He retrieved footage from his archive before suffering the stroke in 2017. By 2018\, the editing was complete. The film tells the story of two brothers who cook and sell their famous BBQ\, sausage and hash at their facility deep in the woods of Fairfield County\, SC once a month and on the Fourth of July. Customers come regularly from as far away as Alabama to buy the hash and BBQ. In viewing the footage\, Stan decided to introduce a score from an opera to underscore the artistry of these two brothers. This unique story of two men with full-time jobs who love to come together once a month to keep their customers happy and cook BBQ and hash is a fitting finish to Woodward’s long career of capturing the untold story of Southern foodways and the folks who cook it. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, December 22nd at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021.
