DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series concludes with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I\, Freddie Stowers\, and Alvin York. Stowers\, a native of South Carolina\, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action wile leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991\, and became the first African-American soldier to receive the award in World War I. Many people still carry on this tradition to represent green (paper) money and brown money (pennies) that they hope to have more of during the upcoming year. This month’s demonstration will focus on the importance of firewood. \nCutting firewood was as much a part of harvesting on farms as picking or gathering field crops and would normally take place in the winter months when the work load was typically lighter. SUMMARY:Grahame Long: Lost Charleston
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by J. Grahame Long on January 4th\, on his book Lost Charleston. \nEven in a city as conscious of history as Charleston\, South Carolina\, not everything has survived. Natural disasters\, wars and other calamities claimed many treasures. Only a few preserved bits of one of the city’s grandest mansions survive at Dock Street Theatre. An old Quaker graveyard still rests in peace but does so under a downtown parking garage. The famous corner of Meeting and Broad Streets was once the area’s busiest marketplace. The Grace Memorial Bridge spanned the Cooper River for more than seventy years. Join us as author J. Grahame Long details the history of these and more lost locations in the Holy City. \nAs chief curator for America’s first museum (founded in 1773)\, Grahame Long maintains the numerous cultural and material collections within its vast holdings and further oversees the History\, Archaeology\, Textiles\, Archives and Natural Sciences departments. Besides his work at The Charleston Museum\, Grahame is an avid hunter and volunteers regularly with Historic Charleston Foundation and Middleton Place Foundation. He currently serves on the Charleston Art & Antiques Forum National Board of Advisors and the Nathaniel Russell House committee\, and is a former member of the Presbyterian College Alumni Board of Directors and Historic Charleston Foundation’s Scholars Committee. Grahame is married to Reverend Lissa Long and has two daughters. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor display and presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be on display at the Museum December 17th through January 10th. A presentation of the quilts to veterans will take place January 11th in the Museum’s auditorium at 1:00 pm at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. After six years\, the foundation decided to award a quilt to any veteran who served during wartime era\, from WWII to present. DESCRIPTION:Visit the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! Winter was the time of year for curing pork on the farm and a season when the family was dependent on home preserved foods during the cold winter months. Join us as staff and volunteers demonstrate how pork was preserved and prepared on the family farm during the early twentieth century in Horry County. Demonstrations will include smoking and salting meat\, making pork sausage\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, making lye soap\, grinding grits\, blacksmithing and more. \nThis free event will be held January 25th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. The L. W. DESCRIPTION:Experience life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us for Wash Day on Tuesday\, January 28th from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM to see how clothes would have been washed using a scrub board and wash pot. From 11:00 until 1:00\, staff will clean and oil part of the mule harness at the pack house. \nA free\, hour long\, guided tour of the farm will be available to the public starting at 3:00 PM. \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with a documentary by South Carolina ETV on inductees from the Civil War & Reconstruction Era into the South Carolina Hall of Fame. Established in 1973\, The South Carolina Hall of Fame\, located in Myrtle Beach\, inducts one deceased and one contemporary honoree each year. It is by law the “official” Hall of Fame for South Carolina. There are nearly 100 members of the South Carolina Hall of Fame\, each of whom has made outstanding contributions to South Carolina’s heritage\, history\, and progress. \nBiographies of Civil War & Reconstruction era inductees include John C. DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of slaves from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. Its passing\, along with that of the grand cotton plantations\, ended a way of life. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 5th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. SUMMARY:Conway publisher to speak on novel about Civil War hero Robert Smalls
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture and book signing by local publisher\, Steve Robertson on Thursday\, February 6th\, on his new novel about Civil War hero Robert Smalls. \nIn the early morning hours of May 12\, 1862\, a young enslaved man astonished a nation\, torn by Civil War\, when he commandeered Charleston’s most powerful warship and sailed it past a formidable gauntlet of Rebel forts to freedom. \nAs the war played out\, his escape from deep within Southern territory set off a series of events that made Robert Smalls the most famous black man in the United States. \nThe exploits of Smalls before\, during and after his daring dash to freedom is the subject of a novel written by Steve Robertson in conjunction with African-American History Month\, Smalls: The South wanted his head. The North his heart. \n“The Smalls story fascinated me from the moment I first heard it\,” said Robertson\, a journalist by profession. “The more I learned about his life and times\, the more convinced I became that his story must be told.” \nAlthough several excellent histories of Robert Smalls have been written\, Smalls is among the first semi-fictional accounts of the man born into slavery\, but who helped change the course of the Civil War. \n“Interestingly\, Robert’s escape from slavery is only part of the amazing story\,” said Robertson. “After his escape\, the South put a bounty on his head. Undeterred\, Robert participated in numerous battles taking place around Charleston and Beaufort.” \nMore importantly\, the previously enslaved man influenced President Abraham Lincoln to allow black men to fight on behalf of the Union at a pivotal point during the Civil War.

SUMMARY:Rodger Stroup: Meet Me at the Rocket: A History of the South Carolina State Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Rodger Stroup on February 8th\, on his book Meet Me at the Rocket: A History of the South Carolina State Fair. \nIn the early 1700s South Carolinians were gathering to exchange information about crops and livestock\, and small rural fairs were held\, enhanced by horse racing\, raffles\, and other diversions to draw in the populace. The State Agricultural Society of South Carolina was founded in 1839 and held its first annual fair and stock show in November of the following year. In 1869 the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina was founded to revive the fair and has presented a fair in every year except 1918. The South Carolina State Fair has a long and storied history from those early days to its current “meet me at the rocket” days. Those initial fair goers would have been astonished to see the rocket\, a Jupiter intermediate-range ballistic missile\, greeting them as they arrived on the grounds. Join us as we explore South Carolina’s agriculture and industry\, its science and art and history through the State Fair. \nRodger E. Stroup is a graduate of Wofford College and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He has been the director/curator of the Historic Columbia Foundation\, deputy director of the South Carolina State Museum\, and director and state historic preservation officer of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. In 2009 he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto\, the highest civilian honor in the state of South Carolina. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.
