SUMMARY:Mark Bara: Snake Identification
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program on snake identification by Mark Bara on Saturday\, June 8th\, at 1:00 PM. Bara will discuss the different snakes found in South Carolina and how to identify them. \nMark Bara is a professionally trained wildlife biologist with Wildlife Society certification. He has a BS in Agriculture from Cornell University\, and after serving 3 ½ years of shipboard duty as a USCG officer\, he used his GI Bill benefits to obtain a Master’s degree in Wildlife Science at the University of Georgia. He was employed for 33 years by SCDNR\, retiring as a Regional Coordinator for a nine county area in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. He has worked with hundreds of landowners and hunting clubs\, assisting them with habitat improvement and harvest strategies. Among numerous other duties\, he was responsible for programs on several public wildlife management areas and heritage preserves\, wild turkey restoration\, and assisting farmers with USDA cost share programs for soil conservation and wildlife habitat improvements. During the early to mid-1970s\, he also conducted alligator research during which time he captured 1\,000 alligators. \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program on the Battle of Sullivan’s Island from the British perspective by Carin Bloom on Saturday\, June 22nd\, at 1:00 PM. \nThe Continental Army’s victory over the might of the British Royal Navy on June 28\, 1776 – forever now enshrined as Carolina Day – had all the dramatic makings of a feature-length film. Hear the story of this disastrous defeat from a British Royal Navy sailor who saw the action first-hand. From failed piloting in the harbor (was it inexperience or intentional grounding?)\, to Army reinforcements that never landed\, to horrific destruction aboard the ships of the line – including injuries both serious and downright comical – there should never have been a question about the superiority of the British fighting force…and yet somehow\, 430-odd Continental soldiers held fast in their palmetto-logged fortress. Come hear the comedy of errors that never should have been; a riveting episode that left no stain on the bravery and intrepid enterprise of His Majesty’s Royal Navy\, though their loss was complete. \nCarin Bloom is a public historian with undergraduate and graduate degrees in historic sites archaeology – particularly sites of the American Revolution. Her passion over the past two decades has been sharing the hidden histories of the Colonial era with interested audiences through conventional and unconventional programs. Bringing diverse narratives to light that have been long ignored is a particular focus of hers\, and her portrayal as a sailor in the British Royal Navy is no exception. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film tells the story of Richard Samuel Roberts\, a little-known African American photographer from South Carolina whose posthumous discovery transcended stereotypes and brought to light a significant legacy. Heralded as one of the south’s most accomplished photographers of the 1920’s and 1930’s\, Roberts was a self-taught artist who was determined to become a master portrait maker\, with every image a true likeness of the subject. SUMMARY:The South Carolina Dispensary System and the Bottles it Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Michael Lewis on the South Carolina Dispensary System on Saturday\, July 13th\, at 1:00 PM. \nSouth Carolina’s state-run liquor dispensary system lasted from 1893-1907. The first of its kind in North America\, the South Carolina Dispensary promised a middle of the road solution to liquor policy\, allowing people to drink but eliminating the side effects of gambling\, drunkenness and prostitution associated with saloons. Lewis tells the political rise and demise of the dispensary through the lens of how it played out in the town of North Augusta. Initially the town’s location across the river from Augusta Georgia (a dry city) created a financial windfall. Within a few years the political corruption associated with the dispensary led voters to adopt prohibition. \nMichael Lewis is a professor of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Newport News Virginia. He studies historical changes in alcohol regulation in the United States with a particular focus on state regulatory systems. He utilizes the warm\, smooth sound of a nylon-stringed guitar to offer versatility in his arrangements of cover tunes as well as his original music. \n“Doug and the Doc” was formed when Doug suggested to his wife\, Shelia\, that he give her a bass guitar lesson. The documentary presents the little-known story of the Korean War through the experiences of the late Sergeant Paul Thompkins\, a Korean War veteran from Conway\, South Carolina. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the Horry County Historical Society present a program by Dusty Owens on the Battle of Blue Savannah on Saturday\, July 27th\, at 1:00 PM. \nDusty Owens is a native of Florence County. He graduated from Francis Marion University and served for twenty years in the United States Army. Formerly the head of the Florence County Emergency Management Department\, he currently serves as a Methodist Minister. Owens has had a lifelong interest in history. He is especially interested in the Revolutionary War and Francis Marion as both he and his wife have ancestors who fought under Marion. His research on the Battle of Blue Savannah includes reading all of the pensioner’s accounts of the running battle that took place between present day Marion & Horry Counties. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV documentary\, Charlie’s Place. This 30 minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time\, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club. DESCRIPTION:See history come to life at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! The Farm will host its annual Tobacco Heritage Day on Saturday\, August 3rd from 9 AM-Noon. For much of the 20th century\, tobacco was the main cash crop for Horry County and the Pee Dee Region and provided an income for many farm families in the area. During the late summer\, leaves were gathered and taken to the barn to be strung and cured. This process required participation from all family members\, down to young children\, whose job would be to hand the tobacco leaves to a stringer. Demonstrations will include gathering\, hand tying and stringing tobacco\, cooking on the wood burning stove\, and a variety of other farm activities. \nThe L.W. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway\, South Carolina. Formed in 2001\, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches\, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne\, Carolina Blue\, and The Virginia Luthiers. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented by the Conway Quilt Guild Quilts of Valor Group on Saturday\, August 24th at 11 AM. The quilts to be awarded will be on display beginning August 13th at the Horry County Museum. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded over 300\,000 quilts to veterans throughout the country. The Conway Quilt Guild has been recognized as one of the newest QOV groups\, seeking to expand recognition to veterans in the northern and western parts of Horry County. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a first person presentation by Paul Lopes as British Corporal Clarke\, a Coy Tailor\, on September 7th at 1 PM. As Corporal Clark of Lt. Col. Webster’s Company\, of Lord Cornwallis’s 33rd Regiment of Foot\, Lopes brings a sometimes tongue and cheek perception of the daily ins and outs of the lives of King George’s Men at Arms during the 1700s; with particular focus on the rebellion in the colonies. \nA living historian for over 25 years in both the 17th & 18th centuries in respect to the military material culture of the periods\, Lopes brings his observations as Corporal Clarke of the King’s Finest Regiment to light\, known as “The Pattern”\, to a public that might only know one side of the conflict. Over the years\, Lopes has worked with both military and civilian museums on reproduction projects and research and has been able to go ‘behind the scenes’ to study the inner workings of the vast collections that these sites have at their disposal that few in the general public might never see. \nThe program will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526.
