SUMMARY:Saving Sandy Island
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests\, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists\, state agencies\, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. \nEarly every weekday morning\, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island\, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat\, the Prince Washington\, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However\, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact\, they fought to keep it this way. \nSaving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making\, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island\, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves\, to the environmentalists\, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 21st\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. SUMMARY:Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Lowcountry. This film features the St. Paul Camp Meeting\, located in Harleyville\, South Carolina\, approximately 45 miles northwest of Charleston.  Similar meetings were first started in the late 1700s by the horseback evangelist\, Bishop Francis Asbury\, along with African American evangelist\, Harry Hosier\, who rode with him to conduct “brush arbor” worship services for white planters and those enslaved on their plantations. In the Dorchester County pine forests of South Carolina these camp-meetings have “tents” built and owned by long-standing extended families from their respective communities. The campgrounds are all located within a 20 mile radius of each other near St. George\, SC. At five different times each year these camp-meetings draw more than 3\,000 congregants from extended families and friends of families nationwide. These congregants stay for a week and are invited to the “tents” of family members\, the worship services\, and to enjoy the Southern home-cooked meals prepared 3-times-a-day on wood stoves in each tent during the seven days of camp-meeting. St. Paul began in the decades after emancipation\, when four leaders of the St. Paul community purchased property to hold religious services. Interviews for the St. Paul meeting feature new and lifetime participants of the event and focus on the importance of food\, faith\, and fellowship in this historic annual gathering. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, February 28th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. SUMMARY:Jason Flynn: Native Plant & Organic Vegetable Gardening
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Jason Flynn on creating and caring for a multi-species beneficial garden space on March 2nd at 1 PM. With the promise of spring around the corner\, now is the time to understand that gardening can provide a multi-layered experience of understanding and growth. Jason will discuss the basics of planning and caring for a native plant garden and an organic vegetable garden. Understanding how these two types of gardens can be inter-designed to benefit not only humans\, but also the environment will help provide a deeper understanding of the correlations found in nature that humans are a part of. \nJason Flynn is a horticulturist at Brookgreen Gardens with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies and a lifelong interest in understanding the interconnections found within the natural and manmade world. In addition to creating the South Carolina Geologic Garden at Brookgreen Gardens\, he cares for the native garden\, a display of plants that grow in the wild of South Carolina\, with ecologically friendly practices. Jason also cares for Bethea’s Garden\, an organic vegetable garden that utilizes sustainable practices\, and has a strong emphasis on educating on the diversity of vegetables grown in the south and their importance to a healthy community and ecosystem. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us March 5th at 11 AM for a program by Brenda Grampsas on labeling quilts. This program will go over why quilters should add a label\, how to make and attach it\, and what to include on the label. Your questions about quilt labels will be answered and your quilts will be valued more because of the addition of a simple label. \nBrenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens. Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows\, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts. Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service. SUMMARY:Deanna Holter: Chandeliers & Milky Ways in Quilting
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a range of topics. In addition to the free programming\, you’ll have a chance to win a door prize at every event! Join us Wednesday\, March 6th at 10 AM as local quilter Deanna Holter shows a variety of Chandelier & Milky Way quilts.  These beautiful quilts and quilt tops were made in a class taught by Deanna at the Conway Quilt Guild.  She will also discuss how the look of a pattern can change by the use of color. \nDeanna Holter started her quilting career around 1982 with Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day. In that program\, quilters didn’t use long arm quilts\, but instead sewed an ‘x’ from corner to corner. She has since altered her original piece and quilts on her long arm machine. After her first piece\, Deanna didn’t make any more quilts until moving to South Carolina in 2005. She found a cute pattern and went to town making quilts for each of her sister in laws. Those quilts got her started on a quilting journey in which she connected with the Grand Strand Quilters. There she met Joan Wobbleton and began volunteering to make Quilts of Valor quilts. Wanting to be a part of a closer knit guild\, Deanna joined the Conway Quilt Guild. Deanna feels very grateful to be part of a group of who she calls wonderful and caring ladies that have also been involved in many ceremonies to present quilts to veterans in the Conway area. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. SUMMARY:Jill Messier: My "1st" Quilt
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a variety of topics. In addition to the free programming\, you’ll have a chance to win a door prize at every event! Join us Friday\, March 8th at 11 AM as local quilter Jill Messier shows off a collection of “First Quilts” and shares the stories behind them. The collection is supplied by quilters from the Conway Quilt Guild and many remain with the person who first pieced them together. \nJill Messier moved to Conway from Enfield\, Connecticut in 2018 and arrived two days before Hurricane Florence. She began quilting in the 1970s after visiting a neighbor who quilts. Messier used the book Lap Quilting by Georgie Bonesteel to create a quilt in the Grandmother’s Fan pattern. After preparing and sewing the quilt by hand\, Messier soon found that she had a new hobby. She has currently finished nearly 100 quilts ranging in size from baby to king\, with all but 2 being quilted by hand. Many quilts have been kept or gifted to friends and family\, while some have won ribbons at shows. She also likes to use leftover material to create other items\, such as origami butterflies\, wallets\, cozies\, iPad covers and purses. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. Quilted items will include bed quilts\, wall hangings and placemats. Karen moved to Conway from Connecticut five years ago. Before retiring\, she worked as a receptionist at several Connecticut corporations and a pollster at Quinnipiac Polling Institute (CT) and Political Connections (SC).  An avid reader and now quilter\, her first two quilts were a memory quilt with her late mother’s shirts and a quilt made up of scraps from her late mother-in-law’s fabric leftovers. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us March 13th at 2:00 PM for a presentation by local quilter Louise Veverka. \nEver wonder what those quilters are talking about when they use words like “flimsy”\, “sandwich”\, “batting and backing”\, “sashing and cornerstones”\, or even the letters HST\, WOF\, LOF? \nThis program is an introduction to quilt blocks and how they are constructed from pieces and the language used by quilters; along with piecing names that go into the standard blocks used to construct the quilt top. Topics will include Half Square Triangles\, Strips\, or Square in a Square\, and what it takes to make a “Log Cabin”\, or “Courthouse Steps” or “Cathedral Windows”. Become familiar with the terminology used while quilting and see some of the most used blocks. \nAn avid quilter\, Lou is the current president of Coastal Carolina Quilters\, and a member of the Grand Strand Quilters program committee\, along with being a member of Myrtle Beach Shorebirds Quilts of Valor. She has been quilting well over four decades and has been a longarmer for about ten years. \nLou is a Navy veteran and learned to sew in high school in New Jersey. She raised a family in Ohio and was owner/president of her own survey company\, “L.V. Surveying\, Inc.”. She and her husband retired to the Myrtle Beach area in 2021. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC. Comprised of volunteer members and performers\, Saltwater Chamber Orchestra boasts a robust season of concerts with quality music performance. The group began as a club in the Coastal Carolina OLLI program in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, and is now an independent chamber string orchestra. Their repertoire consists of classical and show/pop selections\, as well as selections for various holidays. Throughout the years since its founding\, the organization has performed along the Grand Strand coast of South Carolina\, sharing the comforting sounds of strings in the palmetto community. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a range of topics. Join us Wednesday\, March 20th at 11 AM as local quilter Kathleen Armel presents the history behind some of the oldest known quilt blocks. Many of these blocks have been used in quilts over the years and are still found in modern sampler quilts today. \nKathleen’s quilt journey mirrors all the moves she and her husband made while she was employed by JC Penney\, and ending here in Conway\, with Belk. Starting in West Virginia\, and moving through Indiana/Kentucky\, New Hampshire\, Massachusetts\, Maine\, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Armel’s progress in quilting grew with every move\, and each quilt made has a story. Kathleen considers herself a traditionalist\, as she favors simple blocks and basic colors. At last count\, Armel’s home has over 74 quilts in it! Almost every room has a quilt or more. Kathleen is also one of the founding members of the Conway Quilt Guild\, which was started in 2013 by the late Kim Parker of Horry County Parks & Recreation Seniors Program. She is thrilled to see the group grow from 9 members to over 70 these past 9 years and feels that her piecing and quilting has grown even more with the sharing of knowledge this group shares! \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Fallen Heroes\, part of the Carolina Stories Series from ETV. This 30 minute film features the World War II stories of South Carolina natives William Farrow and Thomas Dry Howie. William Farrow was one of 80 airmen who volunteered to fly 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers in the Doolittle Raid\, taking off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier\, bombing Japan\, and then landing in China. Thomas Dry Howie was given command of the 3rd Battalion and sent to take the pivotal town of Saint-Lo in the Battle of Normandy and is remembered today as the “Major of Saint Lo”. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, March 20th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. She began quilting at 55 and before that had never sewn or been around a sewing machine. Since then\, she has made many different kinds of quilts. \nHaydee Burgos was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York at 13. She retired to Conway in 2020 and also joined the Conway Quilters in 2021. SUMMARY:Dot Kenney: Get to Know Quilts of Valor
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us Tuesday\, March 26th at 11 AM as local quilters Dot Kenney and Joan Wobbleton share information about Quilts of Valor (QOV). Learn the history of QOV\, how to become involved and the basics of constructing quilts; from selecting the fabric through completion. There will also be a demonstration on stars and the opportunity for single star quilts to be taken home and completed. \nDot Kenney began sewing on a Singer trundle machine at the age of 10. She has made wedding\, prom\, and christening dresses and has sewn all her own clothes and made clothing for family and friends. She first heard about Quilts of Valor in January 2020 at a charity knitting class. Prior to QOV\, she had made one quilt\, but now makes toppers and helps with local presentations. \nJoan Wobbleton is a retired nurse practitioner who began quilting some 60 years ago when she watched her mother in law and her sisters sitting around a large wooden frame in her living room. They spent the day hand quilting and talking. Joan made one hand quilt almost 40 years ago and that was her last: “I found out a sewing machine was quicker and therefore I’ve made many quilts.” Joan and her husband Jim have been involved in the Quilts of Valor program since 2010 including starting the Myrtle Beach Shorebirds group. \nThe program will be held at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.
