SUMMARY:Sawgrass to Perform Bluegrass Concert at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by Sawgrass on Saturday\, May 10th\, at 1:00 PM. A tribute to local luthier\, the late Jennings Chestnut will also take place before the performance. \nSawgrass was formed in 1998 by founding member Jody Harrison\, whose vision and passion shaped the band’s distinctive sound. The current lineup features Rich Viso\, affectionately known as “Dr. Banjo\,” who has been with the band for 15 years\, and the multi-talented Corey Merchant\, who plays bass and serves as the band’s sound and audio engineer. \nIn 2024\, the band welcomed Corey Anderson\, whose exceptional vocals bring a dynamic new element to the group. Also joining the band is Jenni Lyn Gardner\, a Grammy-nominated musician with a distinguished international touring career and a deep history of music diplomacy. Jenni Lyn brings a wealth of experience\, passion\, and authenticity to Sawgrass. \nOver the years\, Sawgrass has become a fixture in the bluegrass community. SUMMARY:War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. This film tells the story of three American pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force during World War I. The film chronicles the exploits of John Grider\, Elliott White Springs\, and Larry Callahan\, all known as the “Three Musketeers”. War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator was originally published after World War I and became a bestseller. It was assumed that the diary was written and kept by Grider\, the only member of the trio to be killed in action. However\, it was later discovered in 1959 that Springs\, who later became president of Spring Cotton Mills\, Inc. and founder of Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, wrote and published the work in memory of his friend and other pilots who had died in the war. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, May 14th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. For a list of films\, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information\, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov.

SUMMARY:Alan Todd to speak on Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program by Alan Todd\, Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project\, on Saturday\, June 14th\, at 1:00 PM. Horry County is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country\, which has led to unprecedented construction and demolition. As older structures are rapidly demolished and cleared for new construction\, the local area’s inherently valuable used building materials\, structural histories\, and expert trade skills are unnecessarily lost to the landfill. In contrast\, the economic model of deconstruction provides a ready solution to this unnecessary waste and loss. Deconstruction is the careful disassembly of structures\, an alternative to traditional demolition. In this process\, building materials can be salvaged and reused\, histories researched and archived\, and traditional skills revived for future generations. Alan Todd will discuss the process of establishing a deconstruction industry in our area and the environmental and economic benefits it brings.\nAlan Todd is Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project\, a nonprofit organization that focuses on building material reuse and trades preservation. A professor at Coastal Carolina University and trained archaeologist\, Alan’s life’s work culminates in saving old-growth lumber from landfills\, archiving the histories of family homes\, and reviving traditional building crafts through education and community development.\nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. For more information\, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. To view a full list of scheduled programs\, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution\, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of those enslaved from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However\, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War\, emancipation and hurricanes. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today.\nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 18th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.\nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. SUMMARY:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Uncommon Folk
DESCRIPTION:There are some artists that fall outside of the definition of fine art. Sometimes referred to as folk\, outsider\, visionary or memory artists\, most are driven to create something that has a special meaning to them. Some use objects from their own backyard\, or illustrate personal visions or cultural history\, while others use art to cope with life. Some are celebrated locally\, while the work of others goes unseen until their deaths. One thing they have in common is that they are destined to leave their impression on this world through their work. This film takes a look at some of South Carolina’s unique self-taught artists including Maxi McConnell Eades\, Reverend Johnnie Simmons\, L.C. Carson\, Sam Doyle\, Ernest Lee\, and Margaret Robbins.\nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, June 25th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.\nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays.\nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. SUMMARY:Joseph McGill\, Jr. to present The Slave Dwelling Project

His adventures are now chronicled in the book Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery. He has interacted with the descendants of both the enslaved communities and of the enslavers associated with antebellum historic sites. He speaks with school children and college students\, with historical societies\, community groups\, and members of the public.\nSince 2016\, McGill has expanded the Slave Dwelling Project to offer a program of living history called “Inalienable Rights: Living History Through the Eyes of the Enslaved.” The Project has conducted 7 conferences since 2013.
