Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30-minute film tells the story of a time when our climate was cooler and the plants and animals were much different than today. A time when great ice sheets covered the northern areas of what was to become the United States. A time when early humans were coming to chert quarries in what is now Allendale County\, South Carolina. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Walter Hill-Scuppernong and Muscadine Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Since their discovery along the Scuppernong River in North Carolina\, Scuppernongs\, and other varieties of muscadine grapes\, have been popular ingredients in wines\, pies\, jams\, and jellies throughout many Southern kitchens. To learn more about this unique native fruit\, join us on September 12th  for a program by Museum Director Walter Hill. \nThe Director of the Horry County Museum\, Robert Walter Hill IV received his Bachelor’s degree in History from Coastal Carolina University and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies from Harvard University. In addition to his involvement with a variety of regional and national museum organizations\, Hill is also a graduate of the Jekyll Island Museum Management Institute for the Southeastern Museums Conference. In 2010\, he was named Alumnus of the Year for the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts by Coastal Carolina University. Hill continues to live in his hometown of Plantersville\, South Carolina with his wife Adrienne and their children Robert and Kate. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. A successful businessman\, Chapin was involved in each of the communities in which he lived\, including Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina. His philanthropy provided for schools\, churches\, libraries\, hospitals\, and YMCAs. He showed his care of people by establishing programs and institutions to make their lives better. Even after his death in 1945\, his philosophy lives on. SUMMARY:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series - Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century. Hurricane Hugo made landfall north of Charleston sometime around midnight September 22\, 1989. A category 4 storm\, Hugo caused significant damage along the South Carolina coast. The Grand Strand saw 12 foot high walls of water and almost every business along the coast had damage or was destroyed\, including three piers in Myrtle Beach. It’s estimated that at the time\, Hugo caused around $7 billion worth of damage to the area. This film explores the impact of Hugo five years after it hit South Carolina. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, September 23rd\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2020. SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: That Happened Here?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 26th as Marian Calder shares some interesting moments in Horry County’s history including Confederate deserters raiding local farms\, the largest wooden ship built in SC\, an abandoned community on the Waccamaw River\, and a suspected murderer calling down the wrath of God on his accusers. \nMarian Calder is the Public Education Specialist for the Horry County Museum. She received her Bachelor’s degree in History from Coker College in 2007. In 2011\, she began working full time with the Horry County Museum and L.W. Paul Living History Farm. In addition to her membership in various museum organizations\, Calder currently serves on committees for the Palmetto Archives\, Libraries\, and Museums Council on Preservation\, the Waccamaw Market Cooperative Board and the South Carolina Federation of Museums. \nThe program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.
